<a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/e3-2011">E3</a> officially kicked off today in Los Angeles, and I was lucky to be one of the first in line for the latest hands-on demo of <a href="http://www.swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> at the enormous <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/electronic-arts">Electronic Arts</a> booth. There were two different types of demo stations awaiting us: level 1 Galactic Republic characters for those who were new to the game and level 26 Sith Empire characters for those of us who were more comfortable with MMOs. I was hot to play the mid-level Sith characters, but first we had to watch a 10-minute instructional video on how to play each advanced class.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/07/e3-2011-hands-on-with-swtors-imperial-agent-operative/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E3 2011: Hands-on with SWTOR's Imperial Agent Operative</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/07/e3-2011-hands-on-with-swtors-imperial-agent-operative/">E3 2011: Hands-on with SWTOR's Imperial Agent Operative</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 07 Jun 2011 18:30:00 EST. Today we have more from the question-and-answer portion of the <a href="http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> panel at the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sdcc-2010/">San Diego Comic-Con</a> last week. (<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/27/sdcc-2010-up-up-and-away-at-the-dcuo-panel/">Part one</a> of the panel was posted earlier this week.) Panelists included Creative Director Jens Andersen, Game Director Chris Cao, legendary comic book writer Marv Wolfman, Jim Lee, and the voice of the Joker, Mark Hamill.<br />
<br />
<strong>Will there be a mechanic for switching from hero to villain or vice versa?<br />
</strong><br />
No. You make the choice of hero or villain at character creation, and it can't be changed after that. This is so it is clear to other players in PvP who is on what team.<br />
<br />
<strong>Will current storylines in the DC comic universe affect the MMO?<br />
</strong><br />
The game will launch "pristine"; that is, the DC Universe in the game will be the popular, well-known one. Wonder Woman will be in her classic costume; Bruce Wayne will be Batman; etc. From there, storylines from the comics may start altering the MMO universe, but at least from the get-go, the game will start with a clean slate. <br />
<br />
<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online/">DCUO</a></em> will be getting its own bi-weekly comic as well.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/01/sdcc-2010-dcuo-panel-part-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>SDCC 2010: Part two of our DCUO panel report</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/01/sdcc-2010-dcuo-panel-part-2/">SDCC 2010: Part two of our DCUO panel report</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 01 Aug 2010 16:00:00 EST. Among the insanity that is the exhibitor floor of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sdcc-2010/">San Diego Comic-Con</a> was the demo booth of the upcoming, free-to-play action MMORPG from Nexon, <a href="http://www.vindictus.com/"><em>Vindictus</em></a>. Though sandwiched on one side by the Warner Bros' booth (where the stars of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/True_Blood">True Blood</a> were generating enormous crowds) and on the other by G4's two-story monstrosity (which was blaring live broadcasts from the second floor of the booth), you still couldn't miss the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/vindictus"><em>Vindictus</em></a> staff members wearing their <a href="http://spirithoods.com/2010/06/09/e3/">signature red gnoll chief spirit hood</a>.<br />
<br />
After <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/18/e3-2010-vindictus-hands-on/">our hands-on with the game at E3 in June</a>, we were eager to speak to Chris Gyselinck, Assistant Producer for <em>Vindictus</em> about the highly anticipated game. Yes, he was wearing the gnoll spirit hood. No, he wouldn't let me try it. But he did give me the scoop on the game, including upcoming beta plans. Check it out after the jump.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/01/sdcc-2010-massively-interview-with-vindictus-producer-chris-gys/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>SDCC 2010: Massively interview with Vindictus producer Chris Gyselinck</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/01/sdcc-2010-massively-interview-with-vindictus-producer-chris-gys/">SDCC 2010: Massively interview with Vindictus producer Chris Gyselinck</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 01 Aug 2010 15:00:00 EST. Since launch, the free-to-play <a href="http://allods.gpotato.com/"><em>Allods Online</em></a> has had <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/23/allods-online-releases-updated-statement-solicits-player-input/">a very unpopular death mechanic</a>. When a player is killed in the game, Fear of Death is applied to their character. This debuff is a 25% hit to offensive stats for a duration based on level up to 51 minutes. And it stacks, so if the player dies again, they get a 50% debuff. Players must use a special item (incense) to remove the effect early. They can buy incense using the cash shop or in the auction house from other players who have already paid for it with real money.<br />
<br />
With the launch of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/17/players-hath-spoken-allods-hath-listened-revelations-of-gipat/">Patch 1.1: Revelations of Gipat</a> on July 7th, Fear of Death will be going away, replaced instead with a different kind of penalty. But will it be what players have been asking for all along?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/24/allods-online-will-replace-harsh-death-penalty/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Allods Online will replace harsh death penalty with Patch 1.1</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/24/allods-online-will-replace-harsh-death-penalty/">Allods Online will replace harsh death penalty with Patch 1.1</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 24 Jun 2010 13:30:00 EST. <em>Every two weeks, </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/massively-mobile/"><em>Massively Mobile</em></a><em> brings you the latest news, guides and analysis about MMOs on mobile devices. Covering iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad and Android platforms, we're on the lookout for the next generation of MMOs.</em> <br />
<br />
Today I am going to cover mobile apps for <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> for the iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad. If you own a mobile device that runs a different OS, fear not! I will be covering <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-warcraft/">WoW</a> </em>apps running on Google's Android OS and for the Blackberry in the next column. <br />
<br />
It must be noted that the official <em>WoW </em>iPhone app is one of the best MMO-related apps out there with the recent addition of in-game auction house access through the app. It has set the bar for other MMO apps that are mere character and/or server look-up services. Seriously, it blows <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/16/massively-mobile-iphone-apps-for-your-favorite-mmos/">other</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/30/massively-mobile-iphone-apps-for-your-favorite-mmos-part-2/">MMO-related apps</a> out of the water.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/20/massively-mobile-iphone-apps-for-world-of-warcraft/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively Mobile: iPhone apps for World of Warcraft</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/20/massively-mobile-iphone-apps-for-world-of-warcraft/">Massively Mobile: iPhone apps for World of Warcraft</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 20 Jun 2010 21:00:00 EST. Arriving at the SOE booth at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2010/">E3</a>, one is assaulted with the shininess of their latest upcoming titles, <a href="http://dcuo.station.sony.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> and <a href="http://theagency.station.sony.com/"><em>The Agency</em></a>. But scattered about the booth were demo stations for many of their other upcoming games including the recently announced <a href="http://www.clonewarsadventures.com/"><em>Clone Wars Adventures</em></a>. We haven't heard much about this game since <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/01/new-star-wars-online-game-revealed-clone-wars-adventures/">it was announced</a> (and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/04/exclusive-soe-talks-clone-wars-adventures/">our subsequent interview with the lead designer</a>), but we got to sit down at E3 and find out what's involved.<br />
<br />
As a quick refresher, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/clone-wars-adventures/">CWA</a> </em>is less a traditional MMORPG and more a virtual lobby where players can access a number of minigames. There's no leveling or quests or equipment with stats. It's more <a href="http://www.freerealms.com/"><em>Free Realms</em></a> and less <a href="http://www.eqplayers.com"><em>EverQuest</em></a>. It will be free-to-play as a Flash-based browser title when it arrives this fall. But how does all this actually play? Click past the jump for more info.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/19/e3-2010-hands-on-with-clone-wars-adventures/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E3 2010: Hands-on with Clone Wars Adventures</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/19/e3-2010-hands-on-with-clone-wars-adventures/">E3 2010: Hands-on with Clone Wars Adventures</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 19 Jun 2010 19:00:00 EST. We've seen SOE's superhero MMO <a href="http://dcuo.station.sony.com/"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a>. We saw it <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/comic-con-08-hands-on-with-dc-universe-online/">two years ago at the San Diego Comic Con</a> where its physics-based badassery allowed us to pick up cars, lampposts and anything else we could get our costumed hands on, and use them to knock our foes across three city blocks. Two years later we expected to see something substantially new and excited and we were not disappointed.<br />
<br />
Creative Director Jens Anderson took us through a walkthrough of the latest build of the game and we saw boss fights, PvP gameplay and endgame armor sets themed to declare your allegiance to the most popular superheroes in the game. Read on for the latest details!<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/e3-2010-dc-universe-online/">E3 2010: DC Universe Online</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/e3-2010-dc-universe-online/#3089465"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/06/soe-dcuo-e3-2010-00001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/e3-2010-dc-universe-online/#3089466"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/06/soe-dcuo-e3-2010-00002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/e3-2010-dc-universe-online/#3089467"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/06/soe-dcuo-e3-2010-00003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/e3-2010-dc-universe-online/#3089468"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/06/soe-dcuo-e3-2010-00004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/e3-2010-dc-universe-online/#3089469"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2010/06/soe-dcuo-e3-2010-00005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/17/e3-2010-dc-universe-online-takes-it-up-a-notch/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E3 2010: DC Universe Online takes it up a notch</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/17/e3-2010-dc-universe-online-takes-it-up-a-notch/">E3 2010: DC Universe Online takes it up a notch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 17 Jun 2010 13:00:00 EST. <em>Every two weeks, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/facebook-mmography/">Facebook MMOgraphy</a> brings you the latest news, guides and analysis about MMOs on Facebook and Facebook apps associated with MMOs.<br />
</em><br />
In my last column I took <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/23/facebook-mmography-first-impression-of-vampire-mmo-city-of-eter/">a look at the Facebook vampire MMO, <em>City of Eternals</em></a>. One of the commenters on the piece turned me on to another Facebook MMO, the free-to-play, browser-based <a href="http://faunasphere.com/"><em>Faunasphere</em></a>. This game is more like <a href="http://www.freerealms.com/"><em>Free Realms</em></a> than traditional combat-oriented MMOs. It is generally aimed at a younger demographic, one that wants to collect cute animal avatars and customize their virtual living spaces with an endless array of decorations and themes. Using both in-game cash and real-life money, players can create an oasis for their animal avatars to live in. <br />
<br />
There is no combat or PvP, no raids or skirmishes. The goals of this game is to clean up a toxic world with your animal avatar and transform it into an oasis for all life. <em>Every two weeks, </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/massively-mobile/"><em>Massively Mobile</em></a><em> brings you the latest news, guides and analysis about MMOs on mobile devices. Covering iPhone, iPad and Android platforms, we're on the lookout for the next generation of MMOs.<br />
</em> <br />
In the last column, I covered <a href="http:// http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/16/massively-mobile-iphone-apps-for-your-favorite-mmos/">a number of iPhone apps for MMOs</a>. Some kept you connected to the game world, others offered you information at your fingertips, while still others were entire games unto themselves. Today I continue with the second half of the list starting with <a href="http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a> all the way through <a href="https://www.wizard101.com/"><em>Wizard101</em></a>. In the next Massively Mobile column, I will focus specifically on <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> mobile apps for both the iPhone and the Android.<br />
<br />
I have to admit that in the process of researching this column, I became obsessed with one particular app, <a href="http://www.warriorepicsagas.com/"><em>Warrior Epic: Sagas</em></a>. I don't even play the MMO, but I found the app to be one I returned to again and again throughout the week. It's very addictive, has an engaging storyline and is a dream come true for equipment micromanagers like myself. Check it out along with the rest of the apps after the jump.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/30/massively-mobile-iphone-apps-for-your-favorite-mmos-part-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively Mobile: iPhone apps for your favorite MMOs part 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/30/massively-mobile-iphone-apps-for-your-favorite-mmos-part-2/">Massively Mobile: iPhone apps for your favorite MMOs part 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 30 May 2010 16:00:00 EST. <em>Every two weeks, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/facebook-mmography/">Facebook MMOgraphy</a> brings you the latest news, guides and analysis about MMOs on Facebook and Facebook apps associated with MMOs.<br />
<br />
</em>Twilight jokes aside, vampire MMOs are among us. Free-to-play <a href="http://www.joymax.com/darkeden/"><em>Dark Eden</em></a> and <a href="http://reignofblood.net/"><em>Reign of Blood</em></a> are already out. IGG's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/03/26/igg-introduces-vampire-mmo-moonlight-online/"><em>Moonlight Online</em> is due later this year</a> and Spacetime Studios, developer of 3D action MMORPG iPhone app <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pocket-legends-3d-mmo/id355767097?mt=8"><em>Pocket Legends</em></a>, has <a href="http://www.spacetimestudios.com/content.php-Empire-of-Night"><em>Empire of Night</em></a> in the works. And earlier this year, <a href="http://www.ohai.com/">ohai Studios</a> debuted their free-to-play vampire MMO, <a href="http://www.cityofeternals.com/"><em>City of Eternals</em></a>, both on their own site and on <a href="http://apps.facebook.com/eternals/">Facebook</a>.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-eternals"><em>City of Eternals</em></a> is the only MMORPG on Facebook that is really like an MMORPG. Quests, factions, crafting, equipment that needs regular upgrading and other recognizable features are there. But more than that is the fact that the game places you in the same virtual space with other players. This isn't a trading card game with a chat interface or a single player RPG that allows you to use your Facebook friends to accomplish tasks in-game whether or not they are online. In <em>CoE </em>you actually run past other players. For that, the game gets points. Unfortunately, many of the game systems are confusing and the quest flow is a mess. <br />
As much as we love our MMOs, keeping track of our characters, maps, ingredients, friends and everything else, can't always be juggled while online. And often we want to keep track of in-game activities and friends while offline. As a result, many iPhone apps have sprung up, official and unofficial, to help you stay in the game.<br />
<br />
Today, I highlight a number of apps for the iPhone that will keep you connected with your favorite MMO while offline and give you easy access to vital information while in game. There's quite a few of these apps, so I'm splitting up the list over two installments. The first part is after the jump.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/16/massively-mobile-iphone-apps-for-your-favorite-mmos/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively Mobile: iPhone apps for your favorite MMOs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/16/massively-mobile-iphone-apps-for-your-favorite-mmos/">Massively Mobile: iPhone apps for your favorite MMOs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 16 May 2010 20:00:00 EST. <em>Every two weeks, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/facebook-mmography/">Facebook MMOgraphy</a> brings you the latest news, guides and analysis about MMOs on Facebook and Facebook apps associated with MMOs.</em><br />
<br />
SOE's upcoming spy MMO <a href="http://theagency.station.sony.com/"><em>The Agency</em></a> has been long in the making. We've been covering it at Massively <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-agency">for quite some time</a> now. Though it's not quite ready to launch yet, SOE has <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/04/soe-unveils-the-agency-facebook-game-announces-the-agency-will/">surprised us this week</a> with a Facebook gaming app, <a href="http://apps.facebook.com/agencycovertops/"><em>The Agency: Covert Ops</em></a>. Though <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/covert-ops/"><em>Covert Ops</em></a> is a Facebook app based on an MMO, it's not an MMO itself. There is no real time interaction with other players, for example. However it does provide light entertainment for those who enjoy the spy genre and has the same tone and feel of their upcoming MMO title.<br />
<br />
<strong>The Basics</strong><br />
The core of the game is leveling your spy via missions. The missions follow a storyline and some of them are accomplished simply by having the correct resources needed, others require you to complete a minigame. Rewards include in-game cash, experience for your character and components to build better equipment. Every mission requires a certain amount of Cover to complete and when you run out of Cover, you need to allow it to replenish over time or buy more through a microtransaction store. <em>Every two weeks, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/massively-mobile/">Massively Mobile</a> brings you the latest news, guides and analysis about MMOs on mobile devices. Covering iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad platforms, we're on the lookout for the next generation of MMOs.</em><br />
<br />
Much has changed with <a href="http://www.spacetimestudios.com/">Spacetime Studio's</a> free-to-play, mobile, 3D MMO <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pocket-legends-3d-mmo/id355767097?mt=8"><em>Pocket Legends</em></a> since we posted <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/04/12/first-impressions-pocket-legends/">our first impressions</a> of the game last month. Since then, it has seen a number of updates, content patches, refinements and improvements. It has evolved from a multiplayer <em>Diablo</em>-esque dungeon runner to sporting the kinds of bells and whistles one expects to find in an MMO. In this inaugural Massively Mobile column, I catch up with the game that's blazing the trail for mobile MMOs.<br />
<br />
Before I jump into the big patch that came out this week, I want to touch on a particular small improvement that was patched in recently. They restricted loot distribution and experience gains to only those within range of the monster kills. This prevents people from having their friends go /afk at the dungeon instance. But, for me, the main benefit is that it will hopefully stop parties from splitting up at intersections in dungeons. Seriously, people, it's a simple rule: follow the tank. Divided parties are dead parties. Ok, grumpy healer frustration vented. On with the show.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/02/massively-mobile-pocket-legends-evolves/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively Mobile: Pocket Legends evolves</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/05/02/massively-mobile-pocket-legends-evolves/">Massively Mobile: Pocket Legends evolves</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 02 May 2010 10:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> Volume III: Allies of the King is kicking off <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/oath-of-the-rangers"><em>Book 1: Oath of the Rangers</em></a> on the live servers this Monday, March 1st. Massively got to sit down with a <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online">LotRO</a> </em>dev for a tour of the new content. But before we jump in to that, a quick note about content patches.<br />
<br />
There have been some complaints on the official forums that this content update doesn't include a new land mass to explore. But the history of content updates for <em>LotRO </em>shows a pattern of only adding land mass every <em>other </em>update. Since the last update was a full expansion with the introduction of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mirkwood">Mirkwood</a>, it follows that this one would not include new lands.<br />
<br />
That being said, there are many new areas to explore. The devs have created new instances in the "old world" for you to enjoy as part of the new Volume III epic quest line. So while this update doesn't deliver Rohan, it does have new dungeons to explore as well as a new Skirmish.<br />
<br />
The tour (with some mild spoilers) starts after the jump!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/26/the-road-to-mordor-massively-tour-of-lotro-volume-iii-book-1/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Road to Mordor: Massively tour of LotRO Volume III Book 1</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/26/the-road-to-mordor-massively-tour-of-lotro-volume-iii-book-1/">The Road to Mordor: Massively tour of LotRO Volume III Book 1</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 26 Feb 2010 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Ring Online's</em></a> Volume III, Book 1 patch is still humming along on the test server. New dev diaries have rolled out going over <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/17/lord-of-the-rings-online-talks-about-skill-upgrades-for-volume-iii/">the new class skills</a> (which are really just updated old class skills) and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/19/be-crafty-with-ease-in-lord-of-the-rings-online-volume-iii/">new crafting changes</a> (mostly for farmers, cooks and jewelery crafters.) Duo skirmishes and the new epic quest line is being tested as well as the new solo mechanic for the 6-man encounters in the Volume I epic line. But that's not what today's column is about.<br />
<br />
Instead, I'm taking a look at the questions players are asking on <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online/">LotRO</a> </em>forums. Join me for a look into the ramifications of the Lone-lands revamp, leveling characters solely on Skirmishes, farming marks the fastest way possible and the best way to get Legendary fragments for crafting. Plus, a quick look at the latest fan created content.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/19/the-road-to-mordor-community-questions-and-answers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Road to Mordor: Community questions and answers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/19/the-road-to-mordor-community-questions-and-answers/">The Road to Mordor: Community questions and answers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 19 Feb 2010 18:00:00 EST. Volume 3 Book 1, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/28/lotro-announces-volume-iii-book-1-oath-of-the-rangers/"><em>Oath of the Rangers</em></a>, has been keeping me busy on Bullroarer, the test server. I've been working my way through the new epic quest line, trying out the new Spring Festival events and drooling over the new Skirmish rewards. For this installment of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-road-to-mordor">The Road to Mordor</a>, I've spent an unlawful amount of time at the Skirmish camp vendors transcribing the new rewards.<br />
<br />
After the jump, I've listed the current stats of the new Heavy, Medium and Light Armors as well as the new Cloaks and Rift Cosmetics. There are also pics of the new items and a video showing the cosmetics. Keep in mind that this is all on the test server and subject to change.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/12/the-road-to-mordor-vol-3-book-1-new-skirmish-gear-rewards/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Road to Mordor: Vol 3 Book 1 new Skirmish gear rewards</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/02/12/the-road-to-mordor-vol-3-book-1-new-skirmish-gear-rewards/">The Road to Mordor: Vol 3 Book 1 new Skirmish gear rewards</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 12 Feb 2010 19:00:00 EST. <em>Every Friday, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-road-to-mordor/">Road to Mordor</a> brings you the latest in <a href="http://www.lotro.com">Lord of the Rings Online</a> news, guides and analysis.</em><br />
<br />
Turbine's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online/"><em>Lord of the Ring's Online</em></a> has just announced the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/28/lotro-announces-volume-iii-book-1-oath-of-the-rangers/">Volume III, Book 1: <em>Oath of the Rangers</em></a> free content expansion and the patch is already up on their test server, Bullroarer. And with a test patch, comes <a href="http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?t=316278">patch notes</a>. I have to give the normal disclaimers about test notes changing before going live, but given that, let's dig in.<br />
<br />
Two highlights are listed in the notes right off the bat with little explanation other than a promise of a dev diary to come at a future date. Those two new changes are:
<ul>
    <li>Duo mode now available in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/04/getting-started-with-the-lotro-skirmish-system/">Skirmishes</a></li>
    <li>Extensive changes to the original <em>Shadows of Angmar</em> Volume I epic quest line</li>
</ul>
Players have been gimping the Small Fellowship (3-man) system by significantly dropping the level of the mobs when creating their Skirmish. That costs them Skirmish marks. Hopefully the new system will fix that.<br />
<br />
The changes to the original epic quest line are probably to make it more solo friendly. It's very hard to complete it now that most players have leveled past it. If you are new to the game, you are probably begging higher level guild members to help you or skipping it altogether. Skipping it, though, is cheating yourself out of some of the best lore-based content in the game. I hope Turbine is changing it to make it more accessible for newer players who don't have access to groups at their level.<br />

We here at Massively have been avidly covering Turbine's <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2007/10/08/new-textures-for-lore-master-pets/">since we launched back in late 2007</a>. And now, we're dedicating a new weekly column, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-road-to-mordor">The Road to Mordor</a>, to cover the many facets of the game including <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/28/lotro-announces-volume-iii-book-1-oath-of-the-rangers/">the just announced Volume 3, Book 1 content update</a>. Every Friday, we will be exploring topics and writing guides for both leveling players and end game raiders, crafters and role-players, info-hounds and casual browsers.<br />
<br />
After the jump, we've listed links to official guides, fansites, podcasts, blogs, Twitter accounts, Facebook pages and more. This community guide will be updated as new resources become available.<br />
<br />
But before we get into it, also want to help answer any questions you have about the game. Wondering what are the best legacies for Champion Second Age weapons? The lore behind Dol Guldur? Which Skirmish nets the most marks per hour? List your question in the comments below and in a couple of weeks, we'll round up the best ones and answer them.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/29/the-road-to-mordor-community-guide-to-lord-of-the-rings-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Road to Mordor: Community guide to Lord of the Rings Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/29/the-road-to-mordor-community-guide-to-lord-of-the-rings-online/">The Road to Mordor: Community guide to Lord of the Rings Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 29 Jan 2010 12:00:00 EST. <a href="http://crypticstudios.com/">Cryptic Studios</a>, the developer behind <a href="http://startrekonline.com/"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a>, is well known for their character customization options. I know that I spent more time making characters in <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com/"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> than beating up bad guys. Cryptic has brought that same design aesthetic to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-trek-online"><em>STO</em></a>. For those of you not currently in open Beta, I've captured a gallery of shots below spotlighting all the available races in open beta (Federation and Klingon factions.) I've also shown the cosmetic customization screens for both factions and the color palettes available.<br />
<br />
However the true fun lies not in tweaking the familiar Vulcan, Bajoran or Klingon races, but in the build-you-own-alien race tool. For both factions you can randomly create an alien species based on a humanoid model. Blotchy skin, tentacles, protrusions, ridges, antennae and more await those players looking for a unique presence in the game. I've taken screenshots of some crazy creations randomly generated, too. You can also customize your alien if you have something specific in mind.<br />
<br />
Not seeing the alien life form you're looking for? Borg will be available as a Federation faction playable race to those who pay for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/01/14/breaking-sto-lifetime-subs-now-available/">the Lifetime subscription option</a>. Ferengi and Risian will be added as playable races right after launch and future expansions promise more familiar faction race sets including Romulan. <em>Star Trek Online</em> launches on February 2, 2010.<br />

SOE's <a href="http://www.eqplayers.com"><em>EverQuest</em></a>, one of the earliest of 3-D graphical MMOs, launches its 16th expansion today: <em>Underfoot</em>. This particular area of Norrath, the realm of Brell Serilis, the Duke of Below, is filled with inner turmoil and new adventure. Massively was given a tour of the new expansion and we have all the details for you below.<br />
<br />
This tour is divided into two parts. Part one, after the jump briefly covers the two new features being introduced to the game: the new Achievement system and the Extended Target window. Part two is a screenshot tour of the new zones with its bizarre and fractious denizens. Join us, won't you, on a journey into the plane of Underfoot.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/everquest-underfoot/">EverQuest: Underfoot</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/everquest-underfoot/#2366508"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/10/foundation2_1680x1050_1024px_thumbnail.jpg" alt="The Foundation" title="The Foundation" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/everquest-underfoot/#2366507"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/10/foundation6_1680x1050_1024px_thumbnail.jpg" alt="The Foundation" title="The Foundation" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/everquest-underfoot/#2366506"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/10/foundation9_1024px_thumbnail.jpg" alt="The Foundation -- Massively Exclusive!" title="The Foundation -- Massively Exclusive!" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/everquest-underfoot/#2366504"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/10/foundation18_1024px_thumbnail.jpg" alt="The Foundation -- Massively Exclusive!" title="The Foundation -- Massively Exclusive!" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/everquest-underfoot/#2366501"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/10/foundation21_1024px_thumbnail.jpg" alt="The Foundation -- Massively Exclusive!" title="The Foundation -- Massively Exclusive!" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/15/massively-digs-into-the-everquest-underfoot-expansion/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively digs into the EverQuest Underfoot expansion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/15/massively-digs-into-the-everquest-underfoot-expansion/">Massively digs into the EverQuest Underfoot expansion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 15 Dec 2009 17:00:00 EST. With <em><a href="http://www.lotro.com">Lord of the Ring Online's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/siege-of-mirkwood/">Siege of Mirkwood</a></em> expansion <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/01/massivelys-lotro-siege-of-mirkwood-launch-day-roundup/">launch on Tuesday</a> came the new Skirmish system. And with it also came a lot of questions. Though Turbine posted a number of Dev Diaries going over the various aspects of the new private instance system and its reward system, the same questions kept popping up in the game. We'll try to answer as many as we can here.<br />
<br />
<strong>How do I get started with the Skirmish system? What level do I need to be?</strong><br />
<br />
If you are level 30 or above, you will receive mail with an attachment. Putting the attachment in your bags will start a quest that will send you to the nearest Skirmish Camps. The camps are in many places around Middle-earth. <a href="http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?t=304965">A complete list has been compiled</a> on the new <a href="http://forums.lotro.com/forumdisplay.php?f=429">Skirmish forums</a> by a generous player. You don't need to buy the expansion to use the Skirmish system, but your access will be limited until you do.<strong><br />

We've already covered <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/18/runes-of-magic-druid-class-overview/">the new Druid class</a> that came with the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/16/runes-of-magic-celebrates-chapter-ii-release/">The Elven Prophecy</a> update to <a href="http://www.runesofmagic.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">Runes of Magic</span></a> this month. Now we explore the other new class, the Warden. This class relies on their blade to inflict damage on their foes. It's not a ranged attack class as it does not rely on the bow, it is a melee attack class. They also use their summonable nature spirits for quite a bit of DPS as well as their self-only utility and protection buffs.<br /><br />The Warden comes with a number of damage dealing spells. But instead of being long range nukes, they are usually channeled through the Warden's weapons. Later on, the channeled weapon attacks will restore the Warden's health with every blow. The Warden does have one direct damage spell, but it drains the lifeforce of their pet. They also receive one area of effect damage spell. At level 32 the Warden gains the ability to wield two-handed axes and swords and at level 50 they get an AE melee attack.<br /> <br /> Since the Warden is usually on the front lines of battle, he also has a number of protection spells to reduce damage to himself. These include emergency spells like the Level 16 Elven Amulet that reduces physical damage to the Warden for a short time. All of the Warden's buffs are restricted to themselves and their pets.<br /><br />After the jump, a full list of abilities and more playstyle analysis for the class.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/25/runes-of-magic-warden-class-overview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Runes of Magic Warden class overview</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/25/runes-of-magic-warden-class-overview/">Runes of Magic Warden class overview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 25 Sep 2009 15:30:00 EST. Along with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/19/runes-of-magic-unveils-more-from-the-weeping-coast-and-chapter-2/">new content</a> came two new classes beloved to the fantasy RPG genre: Druid and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/25/runes-of-magic-warden-class-overview/">Warden</a>. Only playable by the Elf race, these two new classes use the power of nature to both defend and attack to keep their world safe.<br /><br />The Druid class is envisioned not only as a healer and buffer, but also as a damage dealer and performer of great feats of magic. Certain spells increase the Druid's Nature's Power counter. With enough counters the Druid gets access to spells that can turn the tide of battle in a big way, both defensively and offensively. But with only cloth armor and a weak staff attack, melee damage is not one of the strong suits of this class, unlike their counterpart in other MMOs. Later in their career, Druids can specialize in augmenting either their healing or their damage spells.<br /><br />After the jump, the full line up of spells for the class.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/18/runes-of-magic-druid-class-overview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Runes of Magic Druid class overview</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/18/runes-of-magic-druid-class-overview/">Runes of Magic Druid class overview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 18 Sep 2009 12:00:00 EST. Having spent the last few days in Turbine's newly-Free To Play <a href="http://www.ddo.com/"><span style="font-style: italic;">DDO Unlimited</span></a>, I asked and answered the same handful of questions a brain-numbing number of times. To spare the chat channel on your server the spam, I've listed many of the most common ones here. If the questions keep popping up while you are adventuring on Korthos, feel free to help out with the answers in the General or Advice chat channels.<br /><br /><strong>Why can't I play a Drow/Warforged/Monk/Favored Soul?</strong><br />
<ul>
    <li>Monk class/Warforged race: These can be bought either individually through the DDO store or gained automatically with a monthly subscription.</li>
    <li>Favored Soul class/Drow race: These can be earned by free-to-play players through Favor Points earned by completing quests. They can also be purchased outright from the DDO store. Drows that are purchased through Favor Points are only unlocked on that server.</li>
</ul>
<strong>Why can't I get past level 4? Is leveling capped for players who are not paying?<br /></strong>All players, paying and free to play, can level up to 20. To get past four, free-to-play players can loot certain Sigils from chests in dungeons and select them as rewards. These Sigils will get you past the current leveling checkpoint. The Sigils are also available in the DDO Store. Paying players don't need Sigils to advance at the level checkpoints so they don't have to pass up the other good loot in the chests for them.<br /><br /><strong>How do I switch weapons on the fly?</strong><br />Drag your weapon icon from your inventory to your hotkey bar. Then click on that hotkey when you want to swap weapons. If you have more than one item you want to swap out (for example: sword and shield for bow) you can use the Weapon Set slots in the Inventory panel. Drop the items into the slots that make a set, then drag the icon with the green border down to your hotkey bar. Volume 2, Book 7: Leaves of L&oacute;rien, the first major content patch since the release of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/11/18/lord-of-the-rings-online-mines-of-moria-launches/"><em>Mines of Moria</em> expansion</a>, hit the <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> live servers yesterday. The patch includes <a href="http://lorebook.lotro.com/wiki/Release_Notes_Volume_2_Book_7_Official">an extensive feature list</a> including:<br />
<ul>
    <li>access to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/09/massivelys-developer-tour-through-lotro-volume-ii-book-7/">the lands of Lothl&oacute;rien</a> and the new faction</li>
    <li>new epic quest line</li>
    <li><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/05/explaining-lotro-volume-ii-book-7-crafting-instances/">new crafting instances</a></li>
    <li>numerous class tweaks</li>
    <li><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/06/getting-back-to-basics-with-lotros-new-player-experience/">revamped entry level experience for new players</a> to go hand-in-hand with <em>LotRO</em>'s <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/29/lotros-refer-a-friend-program-rewards-you-with-amazon-vouchers/">Refer-A-Friend program</a><br /></li>
    <li>New items for Wardens and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/01/26/lotros-book-7-will-introduce-new-items-for-the-rune-keeper/">Rune-keepers</a></li>
</ul>
But along with the new features comes <a href="http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?t=255240">a long list of bugs</a> as well. The vaunted quest guide system remains "in beta." It is automatically turned off, but can be enabled by going into the Options panel. I tried it last night and found it very useful. It doesn't work for all quests yet, but it helped me track down some quest objectives that had eluded me in Evendim.<br /><br />On the upside, leveling is now faster and players under level 60 will see a big level jump on their next kill to put them on track with the new system. I've seen an additional 1.5 and 2.5 levels on various alts. Don't forget to hit the trainer after your level bump.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/">LotRO Volume 2: Book 7</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/#1465426"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/turbine-lotro-mom_book-7-crafting-screenshot-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/#1465425"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/turbine-lotro-mom_book-7-crafting-screenshot-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/#1465424"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/turbine-lotro-mom_book-7-crafting-screenshot-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/#1465423"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/turbine-lotro-mom_book-7-crafting-screenshot-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/#1465422"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/turbine-lotro-mom_book-7-crafting-screenshot-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book-7-dev-tour/">LotRO Volume 2: Book 7 Dev Tour</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book-7-dev-tour/#1418060"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/lotrobook7tour18-sms-0309_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book-7-dev-tour/#1415405"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/lotrobook7tour16-sms-0309_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book-7-dev-tour/#1415404"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/lotrobook7tour17-sms-0309_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book-7-dev-tour/#1415403"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/lotrobook7tour15-sms-0309_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book-7-dev-tour/#1415402"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/lotrobook7tour14-sms-0309_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/18/lotro-vol-2-book-7-lorien-launches-with-extra-bugs/">LotRO Vol 2 Book 7: Lorien launches with extra bugs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 18 Mar 2009 18:00:00 EST. The Lavastorm zone has been in <em><a href="http://www.eq2players.com">EverQuest II</a></em> since launch. At the time it was one of the highest level zones, but a few expansions later it is all but deserted by most players. In <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/07/preview-of-the-revamp-to-the-everquest-2-lavastorm-zone/">Game Update 51</a>, Elements of Corruption, SOE is revamping the zone. The older content is being left intact, but new higher level content is being added tied into the latest expansion, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/19/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-shadow-odyssey/"><em>Shadow Odyssey</em></a>. In fact, players will need to have that expansion before they can enter any of the new instances.<br /><br />The revamp includes a x4 raid dungeon, a x2 dungeon (the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/eq2-previews-new-gu51-zone-ward-of-elements/">Ward of Elements</a>), a new crafting instance and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/23/eq2s-gu51-solo-content-not-just-for-high-level-players/">new high level solo content</a>. Turbine has announced (via <a href="http://twitter.com/turbine/status/1322689041">Twitter</a>!) that the Volume 2, Book 7: Leaves of L&oacute;rien content update for <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> will <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/13/lotro-book-7-leaves-of-lorien-arrives-in-north-america-tuesday/">go live this Tuesday</a>, March 17, 2009. But you can get your hands on the update files now. Turbine is giving North American, Australian and New Zealand players an opportunity to <a href="http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?t=254478">download the patch files early via direct download or torrent</a>. The downloaded files can even be grabbed from a different computer and then you can transfer those files to your LotRO machine. No early files have been posted for European players yet.<br /><br />What awaits you in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online/"><em>LotRO</em></a>'s first major content patch since the Moria expansion went live in November? Turbine offers <a href="http://www.lotro.com/gameinfo/vol2-book7">a quick list of the major features</a> on Vol 2 Book 7 as well as <a href="http://lorebook.lotro.com/wiki/Release_Notes_Volume_2_Book_7_Official">updated Patch Notes</a>. The LotRO Follower blog offers <a href="http://lotrofollower.blogspot.com/2009/03/book-7-patch-notes-review.html">a list of what changed during Testing</a> by comparing the patch notes when the PTR went live and now. <br /><br />Massively has its own <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/09/massivelys-developer-tour-through-lotro-volume-ii-book-7/">tour of the new content</a> as the enchanted lands of Lothl&oacute;rien are opened up to players. And, of course, there are plenty of screenshots below to tide you over until the content goes live in a few days.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/">LotRO Volume 2: Book 7</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/#1465426"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/turbine-lotro-mom_book-7-crafting-screenshot-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/#1465425"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/turbine-lotro-mom_book-7-crafting-screenshot-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/#1465424"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/turbine-lotro-mom_book-7-crafting-screenshot-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/#1465423"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/turbine-lotro-mom_book-7-crafting-screenshot-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book7/#1465422"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/04/turbine-lotro-mom_book-7-crafting-screenshot-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book-7-dev-tour/">LotRO Volume 2: Book 7 Dev Tour</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book-7-dev-tour/#1418060"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/lotrobook7tour18-sms-0309_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book-7-dev-tour/#1415405"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/lotrobook7tour16-sms-0309_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book-7-dev-tour/#1415404"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/lotrobook7tour17-sms-0309_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book-7-dev-tour/#1415403"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/lotrobook7tour15-sms-0309_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/lotro-volume-2-book-7-dev-tour/#1415402"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/03/lotrobook7tour14-sms-0309_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/03/14/lotros-book-7-lothlorien-patch-files-available-early/">LotRO's Book 7 Lothlorien patch files available early</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 14 Mar 2009 16:00:00 EST. Sony Online Entertainment continues to entice us with information about their upcoming content patch for <em>EverQuest 2</em>, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/07/preview-of-the-revamp-to-the-everquest-2-lavastorm-zone/">Elements of Corruption</a>. The focus of their current article is on <a href="http://eq2players.station.sony.com/news_archive_content.vm?id=2079&amp;section=News&amp;locale=en_US">the solo content</a> being introduced in GU51. SOE is adding over 20 new quests for level 44-55 characters in addition to the solo quest lines that already exist in Lavastorm. And five of those quests are repeatable.<br /><br />They are also introducing a high level quest line that will lead players to the new two-group instance, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/eq2-previews-new-gu51-zone-ward-of-elements/">the Ward of Elements</a>. It starts with an NPC who players met last year in the ramp up to the current Void expansion. But if you, like me, missed that part, there will be a quest line to get you up to speed.<br /><br />Finally, to make it easier to get around the large outdoor zone, summoned lava steeds pictured above will be available in key locations. Also, markers will be set out along the landscape so mid-level players don't stumble into the newer higher level content.<br /><br />We'll post a tour of the content patch in the next few weeks. The dev team at <a href="http://www.eq2players.com"><em>EverQuest 2</em></a> is gearing up for their next big content update, <a href="http://eq2players.station.sony.com/news_archive_content.vm?id=2057&amp;section=News&amp;locale=en_US">GU51 - The Elements of Corruption</a>. The focus of the patch is a revamp of one of the zones that launched with the game four years ago, Lavastorm. An original zone from <a href="http://www.eqplayers.com"><em>EverQuest</em></a>, the lore of it centers around the Magician Najena, a master of the Elements and summonable elemental pets.<br /><br />In the update, Najena is trapped in her underground lair and is being assaulted by the void creatures that were introduced in the latest <em>EQ2 </em>expansion, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/19/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-shadow-odyssey/">The Shadows Odyssey</a>. It will be a x2 dungeon (<a href="http://eq2players.station.sony.com/news_archive_content.vm?id=2065&amp;section=News&amp;locale=en_US">two group raid</a>) called the <a href="http://eq2players.station.sony.com/news_archive_content.vm?id=2068&amp;section=News&amp;locale=en_US">Ward of Elements</a>. Adventurers must band together to save Najena and defeat the void incursion.<br /><br />Along with this new dungeon, there will be x4 raid dungeon, new high level quests and a new crafting zone. Massively will be bringing you spotlights on the new content in the coming weeks.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/everquest-2-gu51-elements-of-corruption/">EverQuest 2: GU51 Elements of Corruption</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/everquest-2-gu51-elements-of-corruption/#1380512"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/02/lavastorm-rhino-mount_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Lavastorm Rhino Mount" title="Lavastorm Rhino Mount" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/everquest-2-gu51-elements-of-corruption/#1380511"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/02/drakepet_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Lavastorm drake pet" title="Lavastorm drake pet" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/everquest-2-gu51-elements-of-corruption/#1380500"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/02/lavastorm-quest-npcs-shrine2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/everquest-2-gu51-elements-of-corruption/#1380508"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/02/void_beast1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/everquest-2-gu51-elements-of-corruption/#1380502"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/02/lavastorm-ward-dungeon-entry_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/eq2-previews-new-gu51-zone-ward-of-elements/">EQ2 previews new GU51 zone Ward of Elements</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 19 Feb 2009 11:00:00 EST. This is omething many of you won't be able to do for quite awhile, but it will give you an idea of what to expect when it comes time to take this class into the expansion.<br /><br />Solo play was challenging and often frustrating. Approaching a mob from afar, I would drop a Rune of Restoration (a HoT spell that radiates from a stone you raise from the ground), cast another HoT on myself, wait a moment for my attunement to shift back to neutral (it happens very fast out of combat). Then I would let lose with the basic nukes I had available: the instacast cold nuke for opening damage and slow run speed buying me time to drop the longer casting fire DoT and then an instacast lightning spell. <br /><br />By that time the mob would be pounding on me, but I would already be at Battle Attunement 3 and new nukes would unlock. The fire DoT takes too long to cast while being cast and is only worth it if the mob gets stunned or dazed by your lightning attacks (it's a trait) buying you time to cast without getting interrupted. Yes, you could use your Shocking Touch daze ability, but you really want to save that for adds. Mostly I use my second tier lightning attack, my second tier cold spell to debuff the mob's attack adn my first tier lightning attack again.<br /><br />This would put me at Battle Attunement 6 and the next set of nukes across all three schools of magic would open up. Again, the fire DoT takes too long to cast (very long in this case) and the cold one doesn't do much damage, so I work my lightning spells to unlock Battle Attunement 9. The lightning spell unlocked here has no cooldown so you can spam it to open the next tier.<br /><br />At this point my HoT's have worn off, but the mob is almost dead if not already taking a dirt nap. The three top tier attacks all have their charms. The lightning attack has a large crit output (but increases spell costs for a short duration) and the cold attack drops two big debuffs on the mob which isn't usefull with an almost dead mob, so the fire attack is the clear winner here. It's a channelled DoT that cranks out massive damage (167pts per second for 10secs at level 53 for me) and attacks on you won't interrupt it. Not much survives this bad boy.<br /><br />Having traited in Solitary Thunder, my Lightning attacks have a chance to stun and add debuffs that my Battle Attunement 9 Lightning spell can use for extra damage. And I can usually fire off a Fire DoT during the stun.<br /><br /><strong>The problem of adds</strong><br /><br />The big challenge for Rune-keepers while soloing are adds. Two mobs attacking you at once will guarantee you will have enormous problems getting any spells cast. And your single-target daze ability has a short duration, a long cooldown and shifts you towards neutral Attunement at a time when you really want to get to your top tier attacks as quickly as possible. And if it is resisted, it's a free trip to rez circle for you. The only advantage with two mobs is by the time the first one drops and you turn your attention to the second, you are usually fully Battle Attuned and can unload your most powerful attacks immediately on the mob. Small consolation if you are almost dead when the first one drops.<br /><br />Also, getting jumped without being prepared (stacked HoTs and utility spells ready) can be challenging. You can try to get healing stacked on yourself, but by the time you can shift your Attunement back to Battle the HoTs have worn off and you may have lower health than when you started. You basically have to hope your Shocking Touch works or you have to burn down the mob as quickly as possible, which, honestly you are trying to do in any case.<br /><br /><strong>Grouping for the Rune-keeper</strong><br /><br />Grouping has some advantages, but probably not in the way that you think. If you have a dps role in the group, you are probably thinking "yay, I can finally unleash my fire and cold spells", but the mobs I encountered in Moria died so quickly in a group setting that it was more efficient for me to just use my instacast lightning attacks. The exception of course is named mobs and this is where your fire DoTs and cold debuffs really shine.<br /><br />Grouping as a healer is challenging. As mentioned in the Skills section, you only have HoTs to work with until you get to Healing Attunement 6. Then you get a direct heal as well as a ward the absorbs 50% damage. Get ready to stack the HoTs, but not too soon or will get the aggro off the tank.<br /><br />If you trait as healer, it allows you to keep your Rune of Restoration available even if you are Battle Attuned. In some easier battles you can lay down some DPS while using the Rune and your other neutral HoT to keep people alive while you do what you can before you have to move entirely into Healing Attunement. Remember you also have one instacast nuke available to you at all times if you want to throw in a couple of extra zaps while healing.<br /><br /><strong>A final word<br /><br /></strong>Rune-keepers are difficult to master, but fun to play. Trait into Solitary Thunder to level, then try Cleansing Fires traits and get yourself into a group where you don't have to heal to really explore your other DPS lines. Finally, Benediction of Peace allows you to nuke while having access to some Heals and cut down on your aggro. As you can see from the image above, you can get Legendary items that help you in your core abilities. One will be given to you as a starter when you finish Volume 2 Book 1. Take it out for a spin and enjoy the newest class in Moria. <hr />

<br />The trait system in the game has received a big overhaul. Each class trait will now fall into one of three categories. In the Rune-keeper's case those categories are Solitary Thunder (instant damage for soloing), Cleansing Fires (efficient but longer-casting damage for groups and raids) and Benedictions of Peace (healing). You will unlock special bonuses for your class if you chose 2, 3 or 4 traits in one category. And if you choose 5 traits in one category, you will unlock a special legendary. There is a quest to obtain that Legendary, but you'll need 5 traits in the right category to use it.<br />
<div align="center"><a href="http://community.lotro-europe.com/news.php?search=yes&amp;keyword=&amp;pagename=news&amp;type=news&amp;search=yes&amp;keyword=&amp;pagename=news&amp;type=News&amp;search=yes&amp;keyword=&amp;pagename=news&amp;type=News&amp;id=8190&amp;type=Points%20of%20Interest&amp;pagename=gameinformation" style=""><img hspace="4" border="1" vspace="4" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/moria-rk-trait-thunder-425.jpg" alt="" /></a><br /></div>
<div align="center">
<div align="left">A LotRO-EU dev diary has gone <a href="http://community.lotro-europe.com/news.php?search=yes&amp;keyword=&amp;pagename=news&amp;type=news&amp;search=yes&amp;keyword=&amp;pagename=news&amp;type=News&amp;search=yes&amp;keyword=&amp;pagename=news&amp;type=News&amp;id=8190&amp;type=Points%20of%20Interest&amp;pagename=gameinformation" style="">in depth into all the trait trees</a>, so I'll just post screens of them here. I also want to mention that you are not bound to pick all the traits in only one tree. You can hybridize by picking two or three in different trees, cherry picking the best bonuses. Those "improved" skills you can get with picking to traits in the tree essentially remove the Attunement requirement of those spells making them castable no matter where you're at in your Attunement. If you are going to focus on damage, it wouldn't hurt to pick up the healing one for extra help when Battle Attuned and the fight suddenly goes badly.<br /></div>
<div align="center"><img hspace="4" border="1" vspace="4" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/moria-rk-trait-fire-425.jpg" alt="" /></div>
</div>
Also, at level 57 you will have 7 class trait slots, so you can drop 5 in one tree to unlock the Legendary ability (with one caveat, see below) and still have two more to get the "Improved" bonus in another tree. And at level 60 you get a third Legendary slot.<br />
<div align="center"><br /></div>
Also note that the Legendary skill isn't granted to you just by selecting 5 traits in one tree. You still have to do a quest for each one and there is a level requirement for each quest. It can also be upgraded. Check the Dev Diary for comprehensive details.<br />

When <a href="http://www.lotro.com/"><em>The Lord of the Rings Online</em>'</a>s new expansion, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mines-of-moria/"><em>Mines of Moria</em></a> launches on November 18, two new master classes will be available to the player base: The Warden, a tank/dps class and The Rune-keeper, a healing/nuking class. The reason they are dubbed "master class" is that they are difficult to learn, but are powerful allies when mastered.<br /><br />I got to go hands-on with <a href="http://community.lotro-europe.com/news.php?search=yes&amp;keyword=&amp;pagename=news&amp;type=News&amp;id=7413&amp;type=Dev%20Diaries">the Rune-keeper class</a> in the beta for a few weeks and ran it through the paces: solo and group, with different specs and group configurations. Read on for my take on the strengths, weaknesses and tactics of the newest class to join the battle against the Shadow in the West.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/20/massively-in-moria-hands-on-with-the-rune-keeper/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively in Moria: Hands on with the Rune-keeper</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/20/massively-in-moria-hands-on-with-the-rune-keeper/">Massively in Moria: Hands on with the Rune-keeper</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 20 Oct 2008 11:00:00 EST. This isn't just a few technical tweaks to prepare the way for the second expansion to the monster MMO that is <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a>. The list of changes is extensive and though it doesn't include Death Knights, Northrend or Arthas, it does contain:<br />
<ul>
    <li>The new <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/07/28/hands-on-with-inscription-in-the-wrath-beta/">Inscription</a> profession</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/06/29/wwi-08-notes-from-the-pvp-panel-part-3/">New Arenas</a></li>
    <li>The <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/08/26/calendar-system-video-preview/">in-game Calendar feature</a></li>
    <li><a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/10/12/ready-check-raid-composition-for-3-0-2-and-beyond/">New Raid buff system</a></li>
    <li><a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/07/29/barbershops-live-in-wrath-beta/">Barbershops</a></li>
    <li><a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/07/25/the-sights-of-stormwind-harbor/">Stormwind Harbor</a></li>
    <li>and of course, new <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/tag/skill-mastery/">Talents, Spells and Abilities</a> too numerous to mention.</li>

<a href="http://www.gamesetwatch.com/2008/09/for_sale_hero_shoes_once_worn.php">In his latest weekly column for GameSetMatch</a>, Simon Parkin talks to the friend who took over his <a href="http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/index.shtml"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a> account when he moved on from the game. Since he sent her his account information and deleted the game from his hard drive, he has been nagged by a feeling of guilt. Did he ruin her life by introducing her to the time-sucking grind of MMOs? He discovered that while she does spend large amounts of time in the game, she is happy for the time she has invested. She has made lasting friendships within the game and while she would not try other games, she doesn't regret her adventures in Vana'diel.<br /><br />Most of us find a balance between the total immersion of these virtual worlds and the demands of real life. And many real life friendships come from time spent in-game, which should be no surprise given that most relationships spring from common interest. On the other hand, we all know someone who spends far too much time in our shared worlds to be healthy.<br /><br />So here's the question: knowing how enjoyable MMOs can be, but also knowing that they have the potential to take over one's life, how comfortable are you in recommending them to your friends?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/28/recommending-mmos-to-friends/">Recommending MMOs to friends</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 28 Sep 2008 19:00:00 EST. On October 21, SOE's <a href="http://www.eqplayers.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">EverQuest</span></a> will release its 15th expansion, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/15/soe-announces-the-next-everquest-expansion-seeds-of-destruction/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Seeds of Destruction</span></a>. Along with with a level cap raise from 80 to 85 and twenty new zones, <span style="font-style: italic;">EQ</span> will also introduce a new Mercenary system to the game. Long considered a grouping dependent game, players have often struggled to find a group at odd hours or on low-population servers. SOE's solution is the new ability for players to hire NPC tanks and healers. These fill-ins will do the job adequately until the group slot can be filled with another player.<br /><br />What of those 20 new zones? Some are re-imagined classic zones and some are entirely new. And they all are tied together with the new storyline. The agents of Discord have tampered with Norrath's timeline to engineer the destruction of the planet. Players must travel back in time to make sure history goes as planned, even if it means letting good people die and treacherous creatures prevail.<br /><br />Though we've <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/15/exploring-seeds-of-destruction-with-the-everquest-design-team/">interviewed the design team</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/13/unfolding-the-lore-of-everquests-seeds-of-destruction/">read the lore</a> as well as watched <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/08/15/everquest-seeds-of-destruction-teaser-trailer-released/">an introductory video</a>, we were given our own tour of the expansion by Lead Designer Ryan Barker. We've <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/05/30/massivelys-exclusive-look-at-warhammers-tome-of-knowledge/">talked with designer Carrie Gouskos</a> about her work on <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>'s <a href="http://www.massively,com/tag/tome-of-knowledge">Tome of Knowledge</a> and now you get to see what all of the fuss is about. This all-in-one in-game information tracker is so incredibly useful, every MMO on the market will implement a version of it in the next year or two. Yes, it's that good. Think of it as a lore wiki, quest tracker and creature database tailored to your individual character and available at any time while in the game. Check out the gallery to see what we are talking about.<br />

Looking for a quest guide? You won't need it for <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>. The game holds your hand through every quest through a combination of in-game quest tracking, map marking and recording your every step in the Tome of Knowledge. How about a leveling guide? You won't need one of those either. Run through quests, PvP and hit the Public Quests and before you know it, you're on to the next tier of content.<br /><br />What we offer you here today is a look at the points of interest in the Empire starting zone. From character creation to major quest hubs to Public Quest locations to the first Open RvR area, we have a bird's eye view of where you will be spending the first 8 levels of your fledging adventurer's life.<br /><br />
