<strong>The Misty Mountains</strong><br />
You are on a steep rocky slope and just above lies the remnants of an ancient rock slide. Far below you can see the Redhorn pass through breaks in tree canopy as well as the winding Anduin River. The sky is overcast, with a strong northerly wind raining down icy lances. The air is thin, making it difficult to breathe.<br />

Oh the memories! That text-based <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-user_dungeon">multi-user dungeon</a> (MUD) experience may have been the most influential on my gaming career, but it certainly wasn't the first. No, for that we'd have to travel back in time several more years; the day I unwrapped my first gaming console. It was a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Entertainment_System">Nintendo Entertainment System</a> (NES) and the year was 1989. Follow me as I take a trip down memory lane and recount the main influencers on my MMO timeline.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/27/mmorigins-dissection-of-a-gamer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MMOrigins: Dissection of a gamer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/27/mmorigins-dissection-of-a-gamer/">MMOrigins: Dissection of a gamer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 27 Nov 2009 13:00:00 EST. <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> has been out for roughly 6 weeks so we thought it might be fun to crunch some of the numbers <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> provides on their official <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/livestatus/character-legion/">North American website</a>. We've taken a look at realm balance, class balance, and what level <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a>'s population is at. Data collection occurred on November 12 at noon Eastern. A spreadsheet containing all data can be <a href="http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AvhD_RhIofSSdGsteS1lY19ZVW1aODc0ZXBoSV82M2c&amp;hl=en">viewed here</a>.<br />

<strong><img width="225" vspace="4" hspace="4" height="235" border="1" align="right" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2009/11/met-realm-pop-bal.jpg" />Realm population balance (Elyos vs. Asmodian)</strong><br />
<br />
Realm population balance is 50/50 on 3 of 14 servers. The remaining 11 servers have the Asmodians ahead of the Elyos by a 51:49 ratio. It appears as if <a href="http://ncsoft.com">NCsoft</a>'s forced realm population balance mechanic is keeping things under control, but one wonders how rampant these disparities would be if character creation was unrestricted. We've seen <a href="http://warhammeronline.com">unbalanced</a> <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com">two-faction</a> MMOs before.<br />
<br />
It should be stated that these numbers only represent a tally of Elyos and Asmodians across all servers and not how organized or active each realm is in PvPvE.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/13/aion-live-server-numbers-crunched/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Aion live server numbers crunched</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/13/aion-live-server-numbers-crunched/">Aion live server numbers crunched</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 13 Nov 2009 16:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.com/tag/funcom">Funcom</a> recently announced <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/another-new-age-of-conan-deal-begins">their plans</a> to get older players back into <a href="http://ageofconan.com"><em>Age of Conan</em></a> and boost multi-month subscription rates. Players with inactive subscriptions are invited to retry the game for two weeks and receive a double experience bonus. Those who sign up for multi-month subscriptions will receive these additional bonuses:<br />
<br />
<ul>
    <li>3-month sub: Beta access to <a href="http://www.darkdaysarecoming.com/"><em>The Secret World</em></a></li>
    <li>6-month sub: Beta access + in-game helmet that boosts experience gain by 10%</li>
    <li>12-month sub: Beta access + helmet + a free copy of Conan expansion <a href="http://www.riseofthegodslayer.com/"><em>Rise of the Godslayer</em></a></li>
</ul>
<a href="http://massively.com/category/age-of-conan"><em>Age of Conan</em></a> has received many updates in the year and a half since its release. However, MMO players can be an unforgiving bunch, so these incentives to give the game another shot are quite necessary. And it's extra-smart given all the excitement around <a href="http://massively.com/category/the-secret-world"><em>The Secret World</em></a>. Considering how many players would be willing to pay for beta access, a subscription to a vastly improved <em>AoC</em> is just icing on the cake.<br />

They also show a potential communication disconnect between the game's players and developers or possibly even unrealistic expectations. Upon reading the pages and pages of player comments on these patch note additions, the general opinion can be summarized as such: <em>"These changes don't address our major complaints."</em><br />
<br />
There's no doubt that <a href="http://massively.com/tag/aion-patch-1.5.1">1.5.1</a> will greatly improve <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> (less grind anyone?), but players seem to be sticking on a few major points that aren't yet in the tentative patch notes. Most of the players commenting on these notes seem to feel that <em>Aion</em>'s first big patch should tackle the crashing fortresses issue (crysys.dll), flying spiritmaster pets, better UI customization, and a number of other issues (less grind included). There also appears to be resistance to a new debuff that will be added to aether extraction. Players will now be randomly debuffed when gathering, but can quickly remove it by typing a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAPTCHA">captcha</a>. This change is obviously aimed at bots, but many state this will become an annoyance for everyone. <br />
<br />
Check out our summary of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/30/aion-releases-tentative-patch-notes-for-1-5-1/">part one</a> of the patch notes and AionSource's <a href="http://www.aionsource.com/forum/news-announcements/86334-aionsource-interviews-lani-liv-blazier-about-upcoming-1-5-1-patch.html">interview</a> with <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a>'s <a href="http://massively.com/tag/lani-blazier">Lani Blazier</a> to get a comprehensive view of the situation.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/09/aion-1-5-1-patch-additions-receive-an-overwhelming-meh/">Aion 1.5.1 patch additions receive an overwhelming "Meh"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 09 Nov 2009 13:00:00 EST. For instance, Green Armadillo of <a href="http://playervsdeveloper.blogspot.com/2009/11/subscription-game-item-shops-are-third.html">Player vs. Developer</a> (PvD) just made a bold yet insightful statement about subscription game item shops being the third Trammel. For those unfamiliar, <a href="http://www.uoguide.com/Trammel">Trammel</a> changed the way most people played <a href="http://uoherald.com"><em>Ultima Online</em></a> and could be considered a paradigm shift in the industry from "harsh" PvP-enabled MMOs to safer PvE.<br />
<br />
It's no secret that the rise of microtransactions and MMO item shops (aka <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_money_trading">real money trading</a> or RMT) are a big change in direction from traditional subscription based MMOs. However, it now seems we're seeing the line blur between the two. <a href="http://ddo.com"><em>Dungeons &amp; Dragons Online</em></a>, <a href="http://champions-online.com"><em>Champions Online</em></a>, and most recently <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> are all subscription-based MMOs with built-in RMT. Are we witnessing the birth of the third Trammel?<br />
<br />
As for the second Trammel, PvD calls out <a href="http://wow.com"><em>WoW</em></a>'s solo quest system. Never in any previous MMO did players enjoy such easy soloability and it seems that every triple-A MMO since <em>WoW</em> has relied heavily upon the solo quest system. We think PvD may be on to something here.<br />

This was easily <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/28/september-is-a-crazy-month-for-mmos/">the busiest month</a> for MMOs in recent memory and we're sure many of you at least picked up one of them to try out. We're curious to know if you're still playing a September MMO just over a month later. If so or if not, why?<br />
<br />
No MMO in the history of MMOs has experienced a perfectly smooth launch and these September titles were no exception. Did the action-packed combat of <a href="http://massively.com/category/champions-online"><em>CO</em></a> pull you in or did the lack of content push you away? Were you awed by <a href="http://massively.com/category/dungeons-and-dragons-online"><em>DDO-EU</em></a>'s polished suite of tools or annoyed by the limitations put on free accounts? Was <a href="http://massively.com/category/fallen-earth"><em>Fallen Earth</em></a>'s post-apocalyptic setting a breath of fresh air or did you choke on a mouthful of radioactive bugs? Did the beauty and smoothness of <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> make your heart beat faster or did its grind and bot infestation crush your soul? Just how impressed were you with September's crop of new MMOs?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/06/the-daily-grind-are-you-still-playing-a-september-mmo/">The Daily Grind: Are you still playing a September MMO?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 06 Nov 2009 08:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.com/tag/mythic-entertainment">Mythic</a> has been pulling out all stops lately in an effort to improve <a href="http://warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>. One of their latest changes was to <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/patchnotes/index.php?id=2009_1-3-2#patch:0_section:1">remove fortresses</a> from the RvR campaign equation because many players found them to be a laggy and boring hurdle to be overcome. Doing so, however, had a predictable result: Cities were sieged much more often. While <a href="http://mythicentertainment.com">Mythic</a> was acutely aware this would happen, they didn't have measures in place to handle an "all city siege all the time" situation. Today, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/andy-belford">Andy Belford</a> announced <a href="http://forums.warhammeronline.com/warhammer/board/message?board.id=dev_discussions&amp;thread.id=4673">a suite of interim city fixes</a>.<br />
<br />
Check out <a href="http://forums.warhammeronline.com/warhammer/board/message?board.id=dev_discussions&amp;thread.id=4673">the official forums</a> for the complete run-down. A few notables include: The durations of stage 1 and 2 city siege have been cut in half, many parts of the city are no longer tied to city rank, city rank recovers much more quickly, and the <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=411">Reikland Factory</a> and <a href="http://www.warhammeronline.com/specialfeatures/Scenarios_101_12.php">Twisting Tower</a> scenarios are making a comeback to provide those not engaged in city siege with something to do. <br />
<br />
Many <a href="http://shadowwar.wordpress.com/2009/11/05/short-sighted-short-term-whats-the-difference/">players</a> and <a href="http://www.weritsblog.com/2009/11/changes-coming-to-city-siege.html">bloggers</a> have pointed out that these fixes only address the symptoms and not the core issues related to <a href="http://massively.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>WAR</em></a>'s RvR campaign. Andy was quick to mention that these are only initial changes and more will be coming (e.g., <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=948">the Underdog system</a>). Testing of these changes should begin next week so keep your eyes on the <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com">Herald</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/05/warhammer-online-interim-city-siege-fixes/">Warhammer Online interim city siege fixes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 05 Nov 2009 18:00:00 EST. It looks like <a href="http://massively.com/tag/scott-jennings">Scott "Lum the Mad" Jennings</a> started up <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm?loadfeature=3695&amp;bhcp=1">a new column</a> over at MMORPG.com granting players a rare peek behind the MMO industry curtain. His first article covers some of the things you can expect to be confronted with if you are ever lucky enough to land a game designer interview with an MMO studio. Given the competitive job market out there, these insights should not be taken lightly, even though they are just one man's opinion. But what a man!<br />
<br />
No, we're not talking about his wild charisma and manly beard. Okay, that too, but <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Jennings_%28game_designer%29">Lum</a> has been around the MMO block in various roles from programmer to lead designer. Put simply, his advice is valuable. The biggest point he made that stuck out to us was the suggestion to have opinions and back them up. <em>"[A]s a designer you are being paid, in large part, to have opinions. Your job will be to analyze parts of the game and determine whether it will work, how it can be broken, and whether or not it will be fun."</em><br />
<br />
So, whether you're an aspiring game designer or simply interested in boosting your interview skills in general (not a bad idea in these trying times), we recommend you take a gander at <a href="http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm?loadfeature=3695&amp;bhcp=1">Lum's new column</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/05/scott-jennings-mmo-interview-prep/">Scott Jennings MMO interview prep</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 05 Nov 2009 12:00:00 EST. If you were disappointed to hear of <a href="http://alganon.com"><em>Alganon</em></a>'s recent delay <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/28/alganon-decides-to-wait-a-month/">until December 1</a>, this news might cheer you up. We just received word that <a href="http://massively.com/category/alganon"><em>Alganon</em></a> open beta is set to launch on Wednesday, November 11, 2009. This is a great opportunity to check out the game for yourself rather than taking other peoples' opinions for it. The client can be downloaded from a number of places including <a href="http://www.direct2drive.com/">Direct2Drive</a>, <a href="http://www.fileplanet.com/">Fileplanet</a>, <a href="http://mmorpg.com">MMORPG.COM</a>, <a href="http://curse.com">Curse</a>, and the <em>Alganon</em> and <a href="http://www.myalganon.com/">MyAlganon</a> websites.<br />
<br />
If our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/01/win-a-key-to-alganons-private-beta-with-massively/">previous</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/10/massivelys-alganon-beta-key-giveaway/">closed</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/24/massivelys-alganon-beta-key-giveaway-round-2/">beta</a> key giveaways are any indication of the interest in this new title, open beta should receive a hefty amount of player attention. If you're already in the beta, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/quest-online">Quest Online</a> seems to have made a number of improvements across the board that should make for a better gaming experience. We recently caught up with president and co-founder, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/david-allen">David Allen</a>, for an interview, so feel free to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/02/massivelys-pre-launch-interview-with-alganon/">give it a read</a> while you wait until next Wednesday.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/11/03/alganon-open-beta-announced-for-november-11/">Alganon open beta announced for November 11</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 03 Nov 2009 09:00:00 EST. We probably don't need to point out the glaring congruity that each month you play <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> will soon be rewarded with four XP boost amulets; but we will. <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> just spilled the beans on their new <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/veteranrewards/">Veteran Rewards Program</a>. This seems slightly ironic because the game has only been out for a month. We suppose it's probably a good strategy to entice players to stick around; especially after an MMO's first month, which is arguably the rockiest.<br /> <br /> Players will now receive special items for each month they remain subscribed to <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a>. Months one to six award four <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/Lodas+Amulet">Lodas Amulets</a> (20% bonus XP for one hour) and four <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/Revival+Stone">Revival Stones</a> (self/player resurrection). Additionally, month one gives a <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/%5BEvent%5D+Expand+Cube+Ticket">cube expansion ticket</a> (+1 free row) and a special <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/%5BEmotion+Card%5D+%E2%80%99Pop+Legend%E2%80%99">Michael Jackson dance emote</a>. Month three grants an extra <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/Adept+of+Aion+Title">title</a> (Adept of Aion ) and another <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/%5BEmotion+Card%5D+%E2%80%99Forbidden+Dance%E2%80%99">Forbidden Dance</a> emote. Month six gives players special level 40 <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/Black+Cloud+Wing+Feather">Black Cloud wings</a>.<br /> <br /> The disclaimer states that <a href="http://ncsoft.com">NCsoft</a> can expand, revise, or end the Veteran Rewards Program at any time. With the first six months plotted out, it seems likely they will continue as the game soars ahead. Check out <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/veteranrewards/">the official description page</a> for full details on how to qualify.<br />

Predominantly featured are <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=945">the 1.3.2 updates</a>, which most of us already know about including the removal of fortresses, a new keep difficulty system, client performance improvements, and of course, the <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=934">New User Journey</a>. Check out the <a href="http://mythicmktg.fileburst.com/war/us/home/flash/2009_10_Patch132.html">video podcast</a> with producers <a href="http://massively.com/tag/jeff-skalski">Jeff Skalski</a> and <a href="http://massively.com/tag/josh-drescher">Josh Drescher</a> for a full run down.<br />
<br />
A couple interesting bits stuck out for us. First, <a href="http://www.weritsblog.com/2009/10/war-unveils-new-free-trial.html">as Werit points out</a>, <a href="http://massively.com/tag/mythic-entertainment">Mythic</a> has removed the 10-day time limitation on their free trial. Players can now experience all of what tier one has to offer without worrying about a looming deadline. This should work out quite nicely with the New User Journey. We also noticed the release of a new Warhammer-themed <a href="http://www.tcgplayer.com/db/game_review.asp?AID=2231&amp;PID=336&amp;DBID=4">living card game</a> by Fantasy Flight Games called <a href="http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite_sec.asp?eidm=85&amp;esem=1">Warhammer Invasion</a>. This should be of interest to those who just can't get enough order or destruction in their day.<br />
<br />
Finally, you should come back in one hour for our exclusive <a href="http://massively.com/tag/gamex-2009">GameX</a> interview with <a href="http://massively.com/tag/matt-shaw">Matt Shaw</a> and <a href="http://massively.com/tag/james-casey">James Casey</a> as they discuss the free trial and explain their decisions behind the 1.3.2 changes.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/30/mythic-removes-time-limit-on-war-free-trial/">Mythic removes time limit on WAR free trial</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 30 Oct 2009 16:30:00 EST. If you've been holding off on upgrading your standard edition version of <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> to the full-fledged collector's edition, now's your last chance. <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> is <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/board/notices/view?articleID=141&amp;page=">extending the upgrade window</a> by only 48 more hours from Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 12:01 a.m. PDT to Friday, October 30, 2009 at 11:59 p.m. PDT. (<a href="http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?day=30&amp;month=10&amp;year=2009&amp;hour=23&amp;min=59&amp;sec=0&amp;p1=234">Check the time in your area</a>.) Here are the in-game goodies you'll receive for a $10 USD upgrade fee:<br /><br />
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://www.aionarmory.com/item.aspx?id=187050000">Black Cloud Wings</a> (gives 40 seconds of additional flight time)</li>
    <li> <a href="http://www.aionarmory.com/item.aspx?id=120010001">Black Cloud Earring</a> (gives an HP and an MP boost)</li>
    <li> Special character title (<a href="http://www.aionarmory.com/search.aspx?search_text=settler+of+aion#titles">Settler of Aion</a>) with stat boost</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.aionarmory.com/item.aspx?id=169220005">Rich purple dye</a> to tint 10 in-game items</li>
    <li> Two character emotes</li>
</ul>
The original upgrade period ended a bit earlier than <a href="http://ncsoft.com">NCsoft</a> intended due to an interneal error, which is why they are extending it until this Friday (or Saturday depending on where you live). Keep your eye on the <a href="https://secure.ncsoft.com/cgi-bin/Store.pl?dnv=5057064930&amp;action=toggleCategory&amp;mode=open&amp;category=14">NCsoft store</a> if you don't want to miss out on this limited time offer. It's actually a pretty good deal because the price difference between the pre-launch standard and collector's editions was up to $20 USD depending on the merchant.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/28/last-chance-to-upgrade-aion-from-standard-to-collectors-edition/">Last chance to upgrade Aion from standard to collector's edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 28 Oct 2009 17:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.com/tag/mythic-entertainment">Mythic</a> developers just fixed a major bug<strike> that has been</strike> in <a href="http://warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> <strike>since launch</strike> and it's having a big impact on players. Action points (AP) are the one-size-fits-all resource used to cast spells, perform damage attacks, and tank. Suffice to say, a change to the way AP works affects every class in the game. This bug fix makes it take a little longer for AP to regenerate <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=964">as originally intended</a>.<br />
<br />
<strike>Many players claim that the time-to-kill in beta was much higher than it turned out at release, and while a dozen or more variables play a part in this (e.g., better gear, higher crit rates, newer strategies, etc.), AP regen can be counted among them. </strike>You see, after <strike>the game released</strike> game update 1.3.1 came out, players had a nearly limitless AP pool. In fact, AP regen potions were useless aside from getting a quick boost after sprinting. This led to many players getting in the habit of button-mashing their abilities without fearing a complete AP drain.<br />
<br />
Now that the issue has been corrected, there's been <a href="http://forums.warhammeronline.com/warhammer/board/message?board.id=greenskin_sh&amp;thread.id=3740">a bit of an outcry</a> from players who have become accustomed to playing <a href="http://massively.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>WAR</em></a> not as intended <strike>for over a year</strike>. <a href="http://mythicentertainment.com">Mythic</a> stresses that this change is for the better but will continue to monitor the situation and adjust accordingly. Check out <a href="http://massively.com/tag/nate-levy">Nate Levy</a>'s <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=964">developer diary</a> for all the details.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update: </strong>This bug was discovered in 1.3.1 but we are unsure of when it originally made its way into the game. We apologize for jumping to conclusions based on our own experiences.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/27/nate-levy-explains-wars-action-point-fix/">Nate Levy explains WAR's action point fix</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 27 Oct 2009 18:00:00 EST. 43,829 minutes. That's roughly how long <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a>'s been out in the West. Depending on your tolerance for grinding, it may or may not have felt like that amount of time passed. There's no doubt it's been a busy month full of ups and downs, so we'd like to take an extensive look back at the last 30-days and give our impressions on the game.<br /> <br /> <strong>Smooth criminal </strong><br /> <br /> <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em> Aion</em></a> experienced one of the most technically smooth launches in MMO history, which was the result of hard work, innovative design, tough decision-making, and of course nearly a year between the Eastern and Western releases. Anti-cheat software, GameGuard, was stripped from the client <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/18/aion-say-goodbye-to-gameguard-for-now/">in the 11th hour</a>. This no doubt eliminated most of the open-beta issues that would have sent a lot of potential players packing shortly after release. Players just aren't as forgiving as they used to be.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/26/a-look-back-at-aions-first-month-and-impressions/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A look back at Aion's first month and impressions</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/26/a-look-back-at-aions-first-month-and-impressions/">A look back at Aion's first month and impressions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 26 Oct 2009 12:00:00 EST. The notice reads less like a giant pat on the back and more like a checklist of major issues they are working on, which is bound to churn up speculation about how well the title is doing. Oh, we're sure <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> is doing quite well even though we haven't heard the official numbers yet, but developers usually use these opportunities to shout about their accomplishments rather than <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/20/curse-com-founders-open-aion-letter-to-ncsoft-korea/">their shortcomings</a>.<br /><br />The top three issues mentioned in the letter are <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/07/big-improvements-in-aion-1-5-1-patch/">experience curves</a>, client performance, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/17/aions-spam-filter-is-bigger-stronger-faster/">spammers/botters</a>. Most players will agree that it can feel like a part-time job to level your character at times. Some players have had performance issues specifically related to "Cryssystem.dll." And finally, everyone has been forced to /ignore the odd spammer... or fifty. <a href="http://ncsoft.com">NCsoft</a> is using this opportunity to yet again tell players they are aware of these issues and fixes are on the way. <br /><br />We're curious how this may relate to differences between eastern and western gaming cultures. <em>Aion</em> has been <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aion_%28computer_game%29#History">released for nearly a year in Asia</a> and yet only the outcry from European and North American players against experience grinds and gold spamming specifically seems to be sparking a change.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/24/one-month-aion-october-community-address/">One month: Aion October community address</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 24 Oct 2009 16:00:00 EST. We ran a column earlier this week by the fantastic <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/bloggers/brendan-drain/">Brendan "Nyphur" Drain</a> about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/20/the-gaming-renaissance/">the gaming renaissance</a>. One of the key points he made was that there is a new generation of game developers coming out of school who have played MMOs for nearly half their life. This sounds quite promising, doesn't it? I'm here today to play a little devil's advocate and say that while MMO gamers want MMOs made for and by MMO gamers, they get games made for and by businessmen instead. Oh, those businessmen (and women) may have been gamers at one time, but once they formed that studio and sought outside investment, their new priority became making money.<br />
<br />
There are of course a number of indie developers <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/29/five-upcoming-mmos-with-indie-cred/">working on niche titles</a> and their ambitions might not be so great as their multi-million dollar indebted brothers and sisters, but don't kid yourself; they aren't slaving 16 hours a day over their computers for free. They have families to feed, do they not? So, let's start off by defining these two creatures and then analyzing the concept a bit more.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/23/mmos-for-gamers-or-businessmen/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MMOs for gamers or businessmen?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/23/mmos-for-gamers-or-businessmen/">MMOs for gamers or businessmen?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 23 Oct 2009 13:30:00 EST. This week's post features the trade broker, group recruitment, faster XP, rift locations, and custom signatures!<br />
<br />
<strong>1. Quickly search the trade broker</strong><br />
It can get annoying typing out the full name of an item in the 'Buy' tab, especially when the names are all case-senstitive and can be quite long. Here are two quick tips to speed up the process.<br />
<br />
a) If you have an item in your inventory and want to do a quick 'Buy' search to see how much it is selling for, simply <strong>ALT + Left Click</strong> the item in your inventory and the search bar will be auto-filled with the complete item name. <br />
<br />
b) If you don't happen to have an item in your inventory but know its name, you can simply enter the first letter of each word (capitalized) in the search box. For example, you can search 'T S L J' instead of Thin Soft Leather Jerkin. Some item names share the same initials, so you can narrow the search by adding a second letter in lower-case. For example, 'M W F' will result in Major Weapon Flux and Minor Weapon Flux. If you only want Major Weapon Flux, search for 'Ma W F.'<strong><br />

It's even more rare to see one from the founder of a major fansite network. Today must be our lucky day because <a href="http://www.aionsource.com/forum/members/netcurse.html">Netcurse</a>, founder of Curse.com wrote <a href="http://www.aionsource.com/forum/news-announcements/79648-letter-ncsoft-korea.html">just such a letter</a> to <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft Korea</a>, head studio behind <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a>.<br /><br />The public plea puts some extra weight behind the biggest complaints many <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion-online"><em>Aion</em></a> players have been voicing since release, namely: "the grind," spammers/botters, and large-scale PvP performance in fortresses. Statements like "<em>...there are three issues I want to bring to the front page today that need to be addressed or this game will end up being a 300k subscriber game within 6 months, not the one-million+ subscriber game it should be,"</em> show just how impassioned Netcurse is about these issues.<br /><br />What's refreshing is that the author is pointing out potential solutions for each problem he draws attention to. For instance, to combat the grind, he feels <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/07/big-improvements-in-aion-1-5-1-patch/">XP should be increased</a> and more benefits should be rewarded to social players (groupers). Not everyone is agreeing with his comments in the replies, so we're curious, what are your thoughts?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/20/curse-com-founders-open-aion-letter-to-ncsoft-korea/">Curse.com founder's open Aion letter to NCsoft Korea</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 20 Oct 2009 20:00:00 EST. We submitted a few questions to <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> back when players were taking their first baby steps into the strange and lush world of Atreia. Things have obviously been a bit hectic these past couple weeks but <a href="http://aiononline.com"><span style="font-style: italic;">Aion</span></a> Producer <a href="http://massively.com/tag/brian-knox">Brian Knox</a> took some time out today to answer them for us. Thanks Brian!<br /><br /><strong>We've heard a lot about "westernizing" or "culturalizing" <em>Aion</em> for North American and European audiences. Can you please explain the full breadth of this term? Are we talking about language translation, story rewrites, and lowered experience curves here?</strong><br /><br /> Westernizing <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> is about making the game culturally relevant to our market. This includes going above and beyond basic translation and delving into the story behind the text and making sure that it is presented in a way our players will understand. For us it isn't so much about changing things with <em>Aion</em> but shining the spotlight on the area that is most appealing to our audience. <em>Aion</em> is a huge game with a ton choices and features for users all over the world to enjoy; making sure we point those parts out is a huge part of the culturalization<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/08/exclusive-interview-with-aion-producer-brian-knox/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Exclusive interview with Aion Producer Brian Knox</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/08/exclusive-interview-with-aion-producer-brian-knox/">Exclusive interview with Aion Producer Brian Knox</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 08 Oct 2009 17:00:00 EST. The folks over at <a href="http://www.aionsource.com/forum/news-announcements/73690-incoming-updates-1-5-xp-boosts-flying-beasts-o_o.html">AionSource</a> were kind enough to translate the latest <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> patch notes being tested in Korea. <strike>There's no word yet on when western players will see these changes</strike>, but the notes are still worth reading because there are some big improvements. Three items stood out to us especially.<br /><br />Based on the table shown in the notes, quest experience is being increased; to the tune of almost 500% on average (if our calculations are correct). The craziest example is a level 44 quest going from 13,300 to 703,820 experience (53 times as much). <br /><br />Extracting aether now has a chance to debuff you with "Aether Venom." This debuff reduces your chance to successfully extract a gatherable down to 0. Players can remove this effect with a "Word of Purification" ability. Each character has this ability but to successfully use it, one must properly type in a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAPTCHA">captcha</a>. This seems like an obvious attempt to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/07/addressing-gold-spam-in-aion/">prevent bots</a> from gathering up all the game's resources.<br /><br />Finally, <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/Spiritmaster">Spiritmaster</a> pets can now fly. We're not quite sure how this issue ever made it into the game at launch (design oversight or complication?), but 1.5.1 aims to finally remedy it so Spiritmasters aren't totally gimped in aerial PvP. Be sure to check out <a href="http://www.aionsource.com/forum/news-announcements/73690-incoming-updates-1-5-xp-boosts-flying-beasts-o_o.html">the full notes here</a>.<br /><br /><strong>[Update: These notes are for the Korean test server, so they're not final notes for the Western version.]</strong><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/07/big-improvements-in-aion-1-5-1-patch/">Big improvements in Aion 1.5.1 patch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 07 Oct 2009 19:00:00 EST. Don't worry, it's a common mistake. Since a few days after launch, players have been bombarded with gold spam in the game's various chat channels from general to group to trade and even to personal tell (whisper). Notably absent from Lance Stites' first <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/04/aion-gets-its-first-state-of-the-game-address/">State of the Game address last week</a>, English Community Representative Ayase just put out <a href="http://www.aionsource.com/forum/news-announcements/73774-addressing-gold-spam.html">an announcement about gold spam</a> and <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a>'s efforts to eliminate it from <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a>.<br /><br />According to <a href="http://twitter.com/aion_ayase">Ayase</a>, game masters are working around the clock to identify and ban gold spammers. Players can also block spammers on an individual basis, which does work but is only a bandaid solution. It doesn't seem like <a href="http://ncsoft.com">NCsoft</a> has this problem under control just yet, which isn't necessarily a testament to poor effort but to persistent and pesky spammers. The developers are working on new tools and processes to ban the spammers more effectively, but until then our chat channels will likely be flooded with spam. You see, the economy is a strong gameplay element in <em>Aion</em>, and where there's a buck to be made, weasels and sharks will prey.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/07/addressing-gold-spam-in-aion/">Addressing gold spam in Aion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 07 Oct 2009 17:00:00 EST. If you thought they were going to simply dust off last year's Halloween event, <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/liveevents/2008WitchingNight.php">Witching Night</a>, the <em>trick's</em> on you! Okay; no more lame puns, we promise.<br /></div>
<br /><a href="http://warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>'s monthly events are something to behold because they're usually done very well and bring some diversity to the otherwise singular purpose of stomping your enemy on the battlefield. We think Live Events are the epitome of <a href="http://tobolds.blogspot.com/2008/08/horizontal-expansions-to-vertical-games.html">horizontal expansion</a>. <br /><br />From October 23 to November 2, players will put on a number of spooky masks that grant special abilities and complete their event checklists. Of special note is the Daemonball Rally RvR public quest. Think of it as rugby... with decapitation. They're also opening up the Highpass Cemetary scenario to all tiers. It's been a little over two weeks since <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> launched and <a href="http://massively.com/tag/nc-west">NC West</a> Executive Producer <a href="http://massively.com/tag/lance-stites">Lance Stites</a> just released its <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/board/notices/view?articleID=121&amp;page=">first State of the Game address</a>. These kinds of announcements have become more and more frequent as new MMOs launch and they usually cover the main successes and issues within a given period. This address is no different.<br /><br />Lance proudly declares <em><a href="http://massively.com/category/aion">Aion</a>'</em>s <em>"fun and polished"</em> launch and goes on to talk about the incredible demand they've experienced. Perhaps the demand was too high because the main issue he covers in this letter revolves around the server queues players have been sitting in since launch. <a href="http://ncsoft.com">NC West</a> ran the usual prelaunch calculations and even added a 25% buffer to determine the game's initial server caps but that just wasn't enough. <br /><br />It doesn't help that players have been playing long and hard either. <em>"For example, we're seeing timeframes where 60 percent or more of our players are playing at any given time. This is a significant event by any MMO standard,"</em> Stites says. To address this problem, the studio is working on offering one-time free server transfers in the near future. Check out his full letter <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/board/notices/view?articleID=121&amp;page=">on the official site</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/04/aion-gets-its-first-state-of-the-game-address/">Aion gets its first State of the Game address</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 04 Oct 2009 10:00:00 EST. The latest patch installment to hit the public test server is <a href="http://massively.com/tag/war-patch-1.3.2">1.3.2</a>, which features a New User Journey, Apprenticeship System, career balance changes, and further improvements to performance, stability, and RvR.<br /><br />The two biggest items being tested right now are the <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/patchnotes/index.php?id=2009_1-3-2#_56">New User Journey</a> and <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/patchnotes/index.php?id=2009_1-3-2#_55">Apprenticeship System</a>. The former introduces new players to the game much more effectively and efficiently, funneling them into the same starting area (Chaos vs. Empire), auto-adding them to a starter guild, and much more. The latter allows highly ranked players to drop their level (stats and abilities capped formulaically) and lowly ranked players to raise their level in order to play together.<br /><br />As for RvR, fortresses are being removed from the zone capture system, which should result in more frequent <a href="http://massively.com/tag/city-siege">city sieges</a>. Whether this is a good or bad thing <a href="http://bootaesbloodyblog.blogspot.com/2009/09/war-patch-132-joy-pain-or-meh.html">is yet to be determined</a> because depending on your timing you may not be able to join your friends due to the current instance mechanic. Keep warfare will now benefit from a new difficulty mechanic as well, which grants more rewards when more combatants are present.<br /><br />Check out <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/patchnotes/index.php?id=2009_1-3-2">the full 1.3.2 patch</a> notes for all the gory details!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/30/details-on-wars-new-user-journey-and-apprentice-system/">Details on WAR's new user journey and apprentice system</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 30 Sep 2009 19:00:00 EST. For those of you who don't know <a href="http://massively.com/tag/carrie-gouskos">Carrie</a>, she's an associate producer for <a href="http://warhammeronline.com"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a> who has worked on such things as the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/18/massively-goes-to-war-the-tome-of-knowledge/">Tome of Knowledge</a>, user-interface, <a href="http://realmwar.warhammeronline.com">Realm War</a> website, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/07/30/warhammer-online-is-coming-to-the-mac/">Mac client.</a>. The interview mostly covers things she's been working on, so be sure to check it out.<br /><br />While discussing the Realm War site, Carrie offered this teaser: <em>"Actually one of the unannounced Special Projects that we've been investigating since the beginning of the year is an example of an extension of the Realm WAR. I can't spoil it now, but I would keep an eye open in the next month or so for more info."</em> We can't help but wonder if this has anything to do with <a href="http://ea.com">EA</a>'s May 2008 <a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/05/08/shawn-fanning-finally-gets-a-real-payday-electronic-arts-buys-rupture-for-30-million/">acquisition</a> of MMO social network, <a href="http://rupture.com">Rupture</a>. <br /><br />Carrie also briefly mentions something about a "cards" page in the Tome. Will <a href="http://massively.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>WAR</em></a> be getting a trading card game? Does this signal an imminent RMT or free-2-play model? That's just speculation at this point but we'll keep our ear to the ground for you.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/29/carrie-gouskos-shares-a-couple-war-teasers/">Carrie Gouskos shares a couple WAR teasers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 29 Sep 2009 15:00:00 EST. Check out <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/23/five-quick-tips-for-aion/">last week's list</a> in case you missed it. Enjoy!<br /><br /><strong>1. Cheaply level your craft</strong><br /><br />This tip assumes you know <a href="http://www.aionfly.com/2009/06/aion-crafting-guide/">the basics of crafting</a>. The fastest and cheapest way to raise your crafting skill is to complete work orders given out by your crafting trainer in the Artisan district in your capital city. Crafting costs kinah (money), but there are three important things you should bear in mind to maximize your savings.<br /><br />First, only grind up your skill on work orders 10-15 levels below your current crafting level. For instance, if your Tailoring is at 40, only do work orders that require a 30 Tailoring until you reach 50 skill points. Each work order will give you around 1-1.5 skill points, will complete more quickly with a higher level of success, and your extra ingredient(s) cost will be lower from the crafting vendor.<br /><br />Second, only make as many items as needed to complete your work order. Each work order only requires that you create 6 items but the trainer gives you enough basic ingredients for 8. Too many people click "Craft All," which ends up wasting additional resources (i.e., money). Manually type in "6" and then press your craft button.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/28/five-more-quick-tips-for-aion/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Five more quick tips for Aion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/28/five-more-quick-tips-for-aion/">Five more quick tips for Aion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 28 Sep 2009 17:30:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.com/tag/mythic-entertainment">Mythic Entertainment</a> just released <a href="http://herald.warhammeronline.com/warherald/NewsArticle.war?id=926">eight new armor set designs</a> for <em><a href="http://warhammeronline.com">Warhammer Online</a></em>. This part, two of three, features redesigns and comparisons for the Marauder, Shaman, Chosen, Witch Elf, Archmage, White Lion, Witch Hunter, and Knight of the Blazing Sun. They are seeking feedback from players, which can be shared <a href="http://forums.warhammeronline.com/warhammer/board/message?board.id=dev_discussions&amp;thread.id=4012">in this forum thread</a>.<br /><br />The studio <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/08/21/new-armor-set-skins-are-coming-to-war/">drew a bit of criticism</a> for their first batch of redesigns because they seemed to be comparing low resolution versions of the older sets versus high resolution renders of the new sets. It seems as though they've avoided that this time around.<br /><br />One thing we've always loved about the gear in <a href="http://massively.com/category/warhammer-online"><em>WAR</em></a> (even the old skins) is that it has such visual depth, dimension and personality. Rather than looking as if it was simply added as a distortion map on your character (that bends and stretches with his body), each piece appears individual, nicely interlocking with the others on top of your character. The higher end gear looks quite dark and Gothic, as if it was meant for pain and battle and the new designs show a much more obvious progression than the previous sets, that's for sure (most obvious in the <a href="http://mythicmktg.fileburst.com/war/us/herald/images/community/Compare%20MR.jpg">Chosen</a> and <a href="http://mythicmktg.fileburst.com/war/us/herald/images/community/Compare%20KN.jpg">Knight</a>).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/28/another-batch-of-armor-skins-for-war/">Another batch of armor skins for WAR</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 28 Sep 2009 09:00:00 EST. It's not as controversial as a 2/10 or "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/23/anti-aionsed-this-time-i-put-the-joke-of-the-title-before-the/">it has no soul</a>," that's for sure!<br /><br />Oli basically sums up his <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> experience with a string of key-presses: "2, 2, 3, 3, 5, 2, 3, 4, 5." We guess he didn't figure out how to make a one-button macro to simplify things even more! Actually, many players are saying this same criticism can be applied to almost all MMOs.<br /><br />In terms of pros, he found the world beautiful and polished but in terms of cons it was quite grindy and the focus on PvPvE might not appeal to everyone. It seems we're experiencing a bit of an MMO conundrum since <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> gained such international popularity: Make an MMO too similar and you're dismissed as derivative; Make it too different and you're not mainstream enough to be accepted. One wonders when the paradigm will shift and MMOs will be judged by their own merits; or at least compared to a new benchmark.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/25/aion-gets-reviewed-let-the-drama-begin/">Aion gets reviewed: Let the drama begin?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 25 Sep 2009 16:00:00 EST. Today they just announced <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/board/notices/view?articleID=114&amp;page=">a maintenance patch</a> that addresses a major cause of their queue problem: Private stores will now have 30-minute timer to prevent them from being abused.<br /><br /><a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/Private+Store">Private stores</a> are a great concept. Players can set up shop anywhere in the world to sell their spare goods and make a pretty penny. Unfortunately, a feature of these stores is that they prevent you from idling out of the game. This feature really compounds the current server queue problem. <br /><br />To avoid going through the queue process again, many players simply set up a private store and go AFK for hours at a time. One store we came across had this description set: <em>"AFK at work, making you queue."</em> This is even more evidence that MMO players will often take the path of least resistance for personal gain. Devs really need this hammered into their heads.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/25/ncsoft-scrambles-to-reduce-server-queues-private-store-tweaks-i/">NCsoft scrambles to reduce server queues: Private store tweaks incoming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 25 Sep 2009 12:00:00 EST. Okay, we'll admit that it's actually kind of cool even though we don't think there's a huge market for MMO-related exercise equipment just yet. (/munches on Cheetos and /sips Coke guilt-free, while /relaxing in comfy chair.)<br /><br />In an experiment worthy of the pages of <a href="http://www.popularmechanics.com/">Popular Mechanics</a>, these fellows interfaced a basic treadmill, road bicycle tire, and two modded <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_Remote">Nintendo Wiimotes</a> with a PC running <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a>'s newest MMO, <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a>. You can expect more of these kinds of posts in the weeks and months ahead. Let's get right into it, shall we?<br /><br /><strong>1. Change the channel</strong><br /><br />The initial rush of new players coming in to <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion"><em>Aion</em></a> can really bung up certain areas of the game. While we're all for being social (see #5), this can lead to some long and frustrating waits for shared PvE content. Or maybe you're on a lower end rig and the massive amounts of players on screen is causing you performance issues. There is a remedy and it's called <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/Channels">channel surfing</a>.<br /><blockquote>Click the menu tab near your skill bar &gt; Click 'Support' &gt; Click 'Change Channel' &gt; Pick a channel from the drop down and press 'Okay' -- You will be teleported to the exact same spot in another channel<br /></blockquote>You may also need to change your channel to meet up with group mates or rendezvous with another player to make a trade (item, gold, etc.).<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/23/five-quick-tips-for-aion/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Five quick tips for Aion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/23/five-quick-tips-for-aion/">Five quick tips for Aion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 Sep 2009 11:00:00 EST. Oh wait, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/22/aion-launch-day-roundup/">you already knew that</a>? Darn. Well, maybe you haven't noticed <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em>'s official website</a> make-over featuring all kinds of never-before-seen goodies like official forums, character and legion (guild) search, server status/statistics, Abyss control, and player rankings.<br /><br />The new look is clean, bright, and lightweight. <a href="http://massively.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> have updated their <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/">Powerwiki</a> to include a number of player guides and lore articles (still no crafting info though). <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/forums/">The official forums</a> showcase the latest discussion on news, community, servers, classes, and technical support. Players can even show off <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/livestatus/character-legion/search?charID=39270&amp;serverID=8">a 3D model of their character</a> including their latest gear/stats. <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/livestatus/server/">The server statistics</a> page is quite cool too, breaking down individual servers by race, class, level range, and the number of legions. Asmodians hold a slight advantage across most servers, but not by much. So, you're a big fan of <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> (or at least you were at one time) and you've heard about this new MMO called <em><a href="http://aiononline.com">Aion</a></em>. "Hmmm, I wonder what that's all about?" you ponder. "Anything similar?" you posit. "What's so different?" Well, we've written a <em><a href="http://wow.com">WoW</a></em> player's guide to <em><a href="http://massively.com/category/aion">Aion</a></em> just for you! Sit back with a cup o' joe, while we compare and contrast the two MMOs for you.<br /><br /><strong>Races/factions</strong><br /><br />There are three factions in <em>Aion</em>: <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/Elyos">Elyos</a> of Elysea, <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/Asmodians">Asmodians</a> of Asmodae, and <a href="http://powerwiki.na.aiononline.com/aion/Balaur">Balaur</a> of the Abyss. All three continents are contained in the world of Atreia, connected by the Tower of Eternity, and overlooked upon by <em>Aion</em> (aka God). The Elyos and Asmodians are playable races. The former is a bit lighter and the latter is darker, though neither side is truly evil. Balaur are the dark ones; an NPC race of dragon-like demons bent on the domination of Atreia.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/21/a-wow-players-guide-to-aion/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A WoW player's guide to Aion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/21/a-wow-players-guide-to-aion/">A WoW player's guide to Aion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 Sep 2009 16:00:00 EST. We hope this article will shed some light on <a href="http://aiononline.com"><em>Aion</em></a> and help you decide whether or not it pleases your taste buds. <a href="http://massively.com/category/aion">Aion</a> is undoubtedly a unique game but it also offers enough familiarity to make things feel homey. It all comes down to player preference really, but based on the anticipation leading up to release, we are sure the game will have a successful launch.<br /><br />Here are five reasons we think you should play <em>Aion</em>:<br /><br /><strong>1) Polish and performance</strong><br /><br />It's really difficult to predict what will happen on launch day, but <em>Aion</em> is probably going to be a candidate for one of the smoothest MMO launches ever based on their track record of polish and performance throughout all the beta phases. It really comes down to two things: the graphics engine and launching in Korea nearly a year ago. We should also mention <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/18/aion-say-goodbye-to-gameguard-for-now/">the recent removal of GameGuard</a> from the launch client will assist things greatly.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/19/five-reasons-to-play-aion/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Five reasons to play Aion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/19/five-reasons-to-play-aion/">Five reasons to play Aion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 19 Sep 2009 16:00:00 EST.
