So what does this mean for a game seeking to expand on unrivaled success? Many of those ten million players enjoy a good show on the floors of the arena. With many players donning gladiator armor and doing battle, why not promote the events and make a sport of it? In an e-sports interview with Gotfrag, Blizzard talks about success and offers up their strategy for keeping their games fresh in our minds.

According to Blizzard, the arena is what started it all for World of Warcraft e-sports. Players became involved and eagerly pursued fame and glory on the sandy floors and battlefields throughout Azeroth and Outland. Many new changes and concepts, some based on player feedback, are being placed on the desk of developers and programmers for the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. So expect to see some new fights and new ways of mopping the floor with our opponents. To bring the action to more gamers, Blizzard is experimenting with some new broadcasting technology. We might eventually be able to see ourselves, standing gloriously over our fallen foes, on millions of computer screens across the world. That makes winning (US)$75,000 from WoW arena combat so much more glorious.
World of Warcraft builds an e-sports empire originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 29 May 2008 09:00:00 EST. Surrounded by mystery, something is stirring within the crumbled walls of this once proud structure. It is a player, stuck in a door, and screaming for help! With your assistance, this certainly will not be the case. The new epic mission is ready for testing, and Flying Lab wants you to be there.

Due to the popularity of Pirates of the Burning Sea's first epic mission, a second was sure to follow. Something macabre, supernatural, and dark was on the board when notes for patch 1.5 were released. The mission is now ready for people to jump into and test their skills against something dark and wicked. Players are invited to the Flying Lab studios in Seattle and the only requirement for participating is a level 50 character. Check in for the sessions is between 6:15 and 9:00PM on May 29th, June 2nd, and June 6th. Head on over there and get a one of a kind chance to test the mission at their offices before it goes live.

Flying Lab wants you at their studio to test content originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 28 May 2008 09:30:00 EST. Not only is a player suing IGE due to their gold selling practices, but Blizzard also took MDY, makers of the glider program, to court. Now, MDY and Blizzard are moving closer to getting this battle finished.

The arena of choice is the US District Court of Arizona and the two sides put forth their best efforts and finished their replies. Now we just have to wait for the federal justice system to make a decision on summary judgment. As Virtually Blind's Benjamin Duranske points out, that could take some time. Nonetheless, a few people are following such lawsuits closely since this is new territory for the courts and the MMO industry. Some fear the cases bring the federal government onto virtual turf, others think it is time for an end to cheating and want government help, and a few players are indifferent and just want to get their characters to level 70 before Wrath of the Lich King arrives.
MDY and Blizzard continue to cross blades originally appeared on Massively on Mon, 26 May 2008 19:00:00 EST. Since 2007, Antonio's lawsuit has been trying to put an end to gold sales from seller IGE and his case has made more than a few headlines. Antonio was mad at IGE for ruining his game and for companies like it for ruining the experience of other players. He decided that it was time for someone to take a stand against gold farmers, gold sellers, and the people behind the gold selling industry.

The battle is still raging and, just the other day, his attorney filed for his gold selling case to become a class action lawsuit. A judge will review it, and if approved, millions of World of Warcraft players, and perhaps those in other MMOs, will have a chance to fight back against gold selling. The lawsuit shows no sign of losing steam, so be sure to take a break in the inn and check back for updates.
Hernandez v IGE battle continues originally appeared on Massively on Sun, 25 May 2008 13:30:00 EST. As World of Warcraft slowly progresses to the release of Wrath of the Lich King, the juicy tidbits keep hearthing our way. Blizzard recently took some time to release some more information concerning Northrend within Wrath of the Lich King. There are a few glimpses at new dungeons, some notes on vehicle combat, and some new screens of snow and ice. The big feature is an entirely new site devoted to the new class, the Death Knight.

Not surprisingly, the updates come rather close to the release of Age of Conan and are filled with content information and a nifty little Death Knight animation. The new WotLK gameplay features talk about some rather major changes to quest mechanics and, most importantly, raid mechanics. For the hardcore raider in you, the instances now carry a 10 and 25 man raid that are the exact same instances, but offer different ways to advance. Players taking on the 25 man content will get better rewards, but the shift is meant to allow more folks to absorb the new content.

If some extra power is needed, the new Death Knight class will be a welcome friend (oddly enough) in any raid or group with his all powerful skills. Unlocking this class of doom is an easy task. Simply have a level 55 character and the class is open to you. Then you create your Death Knight and start raising skeletons to do your bidding! Pirates of the Burning Sea has plenty to offer in terms of destruction. Sailors can take down ports in group conquest missions or just harass traders around the Spanish Main. However, spending all day chasing after booty is no way to flaunt your PvP skills. After all, you can only sink so many trade convoys before an angry fleet of fire ships is launched at your vessel. Flying Lab is offering a much more enticing form of combat for bloodthirsty sea dogs.

This Saturday, May 24th, on the Pirates of the Burning Sea Testbed server, will be your chance to blow your enemies out of the water and win some free game time, a video card, or even your own in-game parrot! As part of an effort to get the kinks worked out of PotBS patch 1.4, a PvP tournament is being organized to attract some traffic to the server. Details and prizes for the Testbed tournament have been announced and players are reminded to offer their feedback on the new patch. In Pirates of the Burning Sea, finding yourself deep in unfriendly waters without a working compass can be a scary matter. When doubloons vanish, new servers fail to transfer characters, or installations freeze, even the nicest of pirates can start spitting out some nasty language. That 1-800 number or email to a random operator can sometimes lead to even more frustration as emails go unanswered and phone calls remain on hold. For Pirates of the Burning Sea, our glimpse into this dark world of customer service is provided by Misha.

In a recent PotBS devlog, Misha talks about customer service and gives players an update to the source of, or solution to, their troubles. Backlogs, angry pirates shooting cannons, and parrot droppings are major problems, but that is not stopping the team from getting down to business. They have setup a new tier system to get problems solved, offer more foreign language options, and are working on improving their research techniques. There is also a handy PotBS support page with FAQs and solutions to common problems. So if you find yourself all alone on some sandy beach with no rum and no way home, the folks at PotBS want you to know they are launching the rescue party and will arrive shortly.
Customer service at Pirates of the Burning Sea answers your questions originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 23 May 2008 10:00:00 EST. Crashes, bangs, and a few broken bones are what combat in Age of Conan is all about. Players do not simply press a button and watch the beatings in this world of chaos. Players carefully judge their foe as axes swing, arrows fly, and swords slash. Attempting to dodge and strike as the action unfolds are novel concepts in the auto-attack world of MMOs. The system used in Age of Conan is so unique, in fact, that it took an armor wearing, staff smacking, fencing guru of a gamer to describe just how wonderful it all is. The man is Julian "rabbit" Murdoch and the battlefield is Gamers with Jobs.

Julian has an interesting and entertaining article concerning how a man who loves the art of combat finds the world of virtual battle. Julian says that the combat is fluid, realistic, and full of excitement. "There is a real sense that you as the player are influencing combat." Certainly a change from the mold these days. If you are not excited yet, we can give you at least six reasons you should be excited about AoC. If you are pumped, and want to give it a go, AoC has launched. Go pick up your club and start smacking angry bad guys!
Gamers with Jobs tackles barbarians in Age of Conan originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 21 May 2008 19:30:00 EST. The campaign slogans, the fund raising, the unexplained pod poppings, and the attack ads are all over. The next step in the process is selection of the candidates, which should happen today. If you are new to EVE Online, interested in learning about the council, or simply oblivious to it all due to 24 hour mining operations, there is an easy way to get brought up to speed quickly!

A 20 page explanation of the CSM is available, but that is not exactly a quick way of getting acquainted with in-game politics. Instead, CCP has provided a CSM information website to navigate to that explains the process, points out important posts, and could make a good start for those of us writing a thesis paper on the subject. Everything from how the voting worked to important devlogs is covered for easy reference. The first meeting between the CSM and CCP is scheduled for the 20th of June, so there is plenty of time to get yourself acquainted with how the world of EVE Online is going to be affected.
So what is EVE Online's player council all about? originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 21 May 2008 09:00:00 EST. There is a mothership crashing into an enemy station, a distraught news caster, and a frightened mob in a video that marks the beginning of factional warfare for Empyrean Age. Fans of EVE Online have been waiting years for the release of factional warfare. However, something is missing from the conflict that is causing a few outbursts and even some rather large explosions. Players were informed that alliances are not allowed to participate in the factional warfare.

EVE Online has many alliances, and some of them shifted their fire towards CCP when word reached players that their alliance had to sit this one out. The hail of rocket fire caused Greyscale to hop onto the forums and post a response to some of the concerns. Within the post were a few key notes:

Alliances will not dominate factional warfare and their exclusion encourages players not in an alliance to participate

Alliances, mechanically speaking, cannot receive standings from factions

Role playing guidelines dictate that the major factions do not want alliance politics meddling in their affairs

The alliance and factional warfare devlog by Greyscale is still causing ammo to ping off the sides of the CCP flagship, but at least there is an explanation. Pirates of the Burning Sea has seen a few big changes since the game released. The latest addition to the fleet will be new pirate careers in patch 1.4. So what is coming up after buccaneers make their appearance on the high seas? A swabbing of the poop deck to be precise! All that combat and ship destruction leaves plenty of debris around that needs to be picked up. Patch 1.5 is going to do just that.

The details were revealed through an interview with Ten Ton Hammer. According to Flying Lab producer Joe Ludwig, the team is "spending the entire month working on nothing but polish." The coffee is brewing at their offices as the entire team focuses on getting the game to a point where it appears just the way they want it. Some pesky annoyances players often report should be getting a swift kick off the plank as well. Those are, of course, not the only things coming in the next update.

Joe declares that since users do pay a monthly fee, the team is committed to giving them both polish and new content. That content will be appearing as a second epic mission. Joe says it will be something based on the supernatural, but what exactly this means is not made clear. What is clear is that everyone from the lead developers to the interns are going to be cleaning up the world of Pirates of the Burning Sea for the benefit of swashbucklers everywhere.
PotBS patch 1.5 is looming over of the horizon originally appeared on Massively on Mon, 19 May 2008 11:30:00 EST. User Content 2.0, the new review and submission process, officially became seaworthy on the 15th of May. So what exactly does this mean and how does it make cannon balls fly faster? Ktatroe logged onto the PotBS website and explained what exactly the new system entails.

Pirates of the Burning Sea has a creative user content system that allows the lawful and lawless to design their own sails, flags, and even submit designs for vessels. Registered sailors can then vote on the content for inclusion in the game. The PotBS team has streamlined the process for an approval or a broadside by reviewers for all content submissions. The primary motivation has been speed and, so far, over 1,300 new pieces of user generated content have been reviewed. There are plenty of people standing in a secret government lab eagerly awaiting the chance to waltz through a stargate. In fact, around 100,000 eager explorers have signed up for the Stargate Worlds' closed beta. 100,000 players is an improvement on the number reported earlier this month and registrations continue to climb. The closed beta registration has only been open for about half of a month, so the developers at Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment are pretty happy. So happy, in fact, that they actually shouted out with joy in their press release.

Overall, the news is exciting since the Sci-Fi genre is well on the way to getting a nice, shiny, new game. The beloved series is coming to a computer screen near you and there is still time to get in on the action. Stargate Worlds is accepting closed beta applications and the sooner folks sign up, the better. Blizzard should have a reason to fret since two games, Age of Conan and Warhammer Online, are set to release this year and might rain on Blizzard's parade. However, Blizzard refuses to lower their shield and sword and bubble hearth. They are actually pretty confident in their upcoming World of Warcraft expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, and they do not think that there is too much aggro from the new games. In an interview with Eurogamer, a few of the devs chatted about what spells will be cast to keep the accounts up and the game fresh.

Content updates do not come as much of a surprise. Blizzard is raising the cap to level 80, but they do not want you to feel as if the bar has been set and there is no progression beyond it. Raids and dungeons are going to be more inviting since, in the words of Jeff Kaplan, "Burning Crusade was way too hardcore out of the gate." If raiding is still not for you, the Death Knight is going to add a little flavor to the game. Best of all, there are going to be evolved murlocs! With this exciting change, we may feel badly about killing the poor guys over and over again for their shiny, graphically enhanced, scales. Want to do something for society? Well ladies and gentlemen, NASA wants you! Not for the vigorous life of an astronaut, but to stay in bed. They will even pay you (US)$17,000 to do it. What about World of Warcraft or the other MMOs we play? How are we to survive for up to 90 days away from the internet? Too easy says NASA! They will provide the internet and anyone is welcome to bring their own system. Newbies are not blasted at every moment, their wrecks lining the EVE universe as a testament to the power of skill points. Heck, you do not have to focus on fighting. After all, there is more than one way to pop a pod! RPG Vault tackles such common misconceptions about EVE and attempts to shed some light on what really goes on in deep space.

They hit the nail on the head in more ways than one. Take for example, the EVE skill system. It is a detailed skill system designed so the casual player can train and still earn a paycheck, feed the dog, and maintain forward progress. Does that forward progress call for camping gates, destroying players, and leading a massive alliance onto glory? No, not at all! A player selling the simplest of vessels, the frigate, can have a huge impact on the economy. Some folks even spend most of their time on alts, spying and infiltrating other corporations, without a focus on any profession other than espionage. There are plenty of things to do and RPG Vault makes sure gamers considering getting plugged into a capsule have their heads on straight.
The five misconceptions about EVE Online originally appeared on Massively on Sun, 11 May 2008 10:00:00 EST. In EVE, there is always some alliance, some corporation, or some like-minded capsuleer watching and waiting to strike. Within this realm flew an alliance that was a powerful force for nearly four years. Their trademark ace of skulls, four of which represent the leading corporations of the alliance, struck fear into the hearts of anyone on the wrong end of their blasters. They were hired guns, killers, and they were good at it. They were the Mercenary Coalition. For them, the war is now over, the contract killing has ended, and the alliance is no more.

That's right, the alliance has unloaded their ammunition, shut down their offices, and is calling it quits. From a press release on the EVE forums, Seleene, alliance leader of Mercenary Coalition, made the grim announcement and thanked members for their service. She said, "Everyone who has ever worn the MC tag participated in something truly unique. I can do nothing but salute you and give my heartfelt thanks." The reasons for disbanding are numerous, but a particular focus is placed on their betrayal of Band of Brothers. For some of us, one less mercenary alliance is a great thing. For others, this is sad day for the history books to record. The alliance, which has seen the better part of three years as a force within EVE, has docked for the final time.

[Thanks Nyphur!]
EVE's Mercenary Coalition has been disbanded originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 08 May 2008 11:30:00 EST. With all of the server changes and patch discussions coming out of Pirates of the Burning Sea, we thought we'd bombard you with some more useful information. PotBS skills are going to get overhauled and the changes will soon be upon us. Pirate, naval officer, privateer, or free trader, PotBS patch 1.4 is going to change the way we sail the seven seas.

The changes are being broadcast in the form of several devlogs. So far, the privateer and the naval officer skills are receiving a bit of a spring cleaning. Each has had their skills shuffled around a bit to appeal to players who have had common complaints concerning their trees. For example, sanctioned piracy for the privateer is now a free skill at level 15! There is nothing better than receiving a free letter of marque from the monarch for tossing cannon balls and looting gold. The swabbing of the poop deck, so to speak, is coming soon, so be sure to read the PotBS patch 1.4 devlogs for info on your profession of choice!
Class changes coming in PotBS Patch 1.4 originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 06 May 2008 16:00:00 EST. In case you were lost in space, mining some rare mineral, today marks five years since a world of adventure, darkness, war, and spectacular beauty dove headfirst into the hands of gamers around the world. CCP created a game where rails were an unfamiliar term and players were encouraged to find new ways of conquering the galaxy or the market that supported it all. Wars were waged, empires rose and fell, and evolution continued to shape the world on all fronts. EVE Online has reached five years and what an amazing journey the game has taken.

EVE has grown to include over 250,000 players from around the world, all happily mining, pirating, or planning world domination. The game has come a long way since that first glorious day. We have seen numerous expansions, a graphics overhaul, wars, scams, and scandals. Countless pods have been destroyed and even more asteroid belts have been strip mined to dust. The future looks just as exciting with ambulation and the Empyrean Age, which will finally place the four empires in an all out war, looming through the next stargate. On this 5th anniversary of the creation of this world, we bring you back to take a look at the moments that made EVE a unique and exciting world in which to live.

Gallery: EVE Online Five Year Anniversary

EVE Online: Five years and counting originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 06 May 2008 13:30:00 EST. Over at EVE Online's pavilion at New York Comic Con, one man would add to the hopes and dreams of thousands. Matt Woodward took a few moments of his time to talk to TenTonHammer on a subject close to the heart of many capsuleers. The subject? EVE of course, but most importantly, the expansion Empyrean Age. Take a few moments to put aside those evil schemes, dock, grab a Quafe, and tune in because the interview is packed with exciting hints at what is to come.

Matt explains in the interview that Empyrean Age will have fighting, glory, new missions and reputation, and plenty of fleet battles. One of the points made by Matt is that "the big fight that is coming" will allow everyone to be involved in one way or another. Rewards will be given, the front will shift, and the design is being hashed out to bring empire, lowsec, and 0.0 players together to duke it out. The expansion is going to pack one hell of a punch and is long overdue in the minds of many EVE pilots. When the expansion finally does arrive, players will rejoice as new ways to destroy one another are introduced. To us, that smells like victory.
Matt Woodward interview gives us a glimpse at Empyrean Age originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 02 May 2008 21:00:00 EST. On the war torn battlefields of Europe, the armies of the Axis and the Allies have been fighting a bitter struggle for years. Armies are surrounded and crushed, Tigers break through the Ardennes, and countless cities have been reduced to rubble in the struggle for ultimate domination. At the bottom of the totem pole of this conflict, is the gun totting, foot marching, cold food eating grunt. The war effort needs more of you and World War II Online: Battleground Europe is offering new players tantalizing rewards and updates to help send you directly into the path of blitzkreig.

WWIIOL has been actively recruiting since early April by offering some combat bonuses. Other than free stuff and pats on the back for your patriotism, the game has announced some planned implementations to get players right into the meat grinder. They are promoting an upgraded graphics engine known as Unity II. In a press release provided to Massively, the WWIIOL team promises troopers much improved graphics and an exciting new experience when entering into combat on urban ground. Before you get there, your survivability will hopefully be increased by a new tutorial system that not only touts a form of basic training, but also a combat training scenario that puts you in an instanced battle to practice what you've learned. If you wish to put your mark on the dotted line, the sign-up page is here. For example, when jumping through a stargate on the way home from a successful trading expedition, the game decides to freeze. The stargate then disappears, the UI becomes completely useless, and the only thing on the screen are twinkling stars. What happened here? A massive battle between alliances just took place and the node decided to choke. This means lag, waiting, re-logging, and the never ending cycle of keyboard smashing. Oh what a wonderful world it would be if this did not happen.

Well, with the next Trinity patch, a new networking layer that may ease the suffering of cosmic travelers is being tested. EVE and CCP are requesting some extra players, about 200 or so, to help test the networking layer on singularity. You only need to log in between 1830 GMT and 2100 GMT on the 29th of April to participate in the test. Sound easy? Well it is just that simple. CCP will have a channel devoted to test results and updates throughout the testing period. Hopefully, if successful, we can all avoid the lag when corporations decide to crush one another or when you make that evil trip into Jita. In order to make sure your ship does not implode when you try to log in, be sure to check out the singularity installation and FAQ page to be ready to test and make the universe a better place.
CCP and EVE need help testing the new networking layer originally appeared on Massively on Mon, 28 Apr 2008 10:00:00 EST. The barbarians are coming! Age of Conan, which will be released into our outstretched arms on May 20th, offered up a lot of fun over last weekend. Funcom hosted an AoC PvP event and invited some folks to wear armor, loincloths, and pick up some really big clubs. These players then proceeded to train up, gather some loot, and enter into the arena for a fight to the death! The beatings that followed were portrayed by the team over at IGN in all of their gruesome glory.

Players were able to log into either death match or capture the flag games and go head to head with their enemies. There were, of course, plenty of hearty barbarians who will kill you six times before you hit the ground waiting to show off their skills. Players in AoC can use spells or demonic pets to dispose of their enemies or even call upon the power of the gods themselves. If you're not familiar with Age of Conan's style of PvP, perhaps you'd like it explained weather-man style?

Regardless, this is something you're going to need to prepare for. This is not your average PvP experience. For example, making an enemy of one barbarian could mean you will suffer a horrible death by a swarm of eels (yes, eels). Whether victorious through the use of the double bladed axe or the use of the all mighty eel, AoC is hopefully going to satisfy the thirst for victory in warriors from around the globe.
Looking back at the Age of Conan PvP weekend originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 25 Apr 2008 20:00:00 EST.
For years the war waged between the empires of EVE Online has been a cold war. Well, now it is time to break out the Clausewitz ladies and gentlemen. The long awaited clash of the titans is coming and there is nowhere to hide. Corporation warfare has nothing on what is about to occur. Systems will change hands, empires will fall, and the galaxy as we know it will change forever. To hell with putting blasters on stun, this will be a fight to the finish.

With the launch of EVE's expansion Empyrean Age sometime in the future, the entire universe, players and NPCs, will be duking it out in the name of their empire in an epic struggle for galactic domination. The war is not going to be easy and players may participate alone, running missions for their empire of choice, or they may bring their entire corporation into the fray. You thought piracy was a problem, imagine finding yourself in the middle of an Amarr fleet bent on your merciless destruction! Kick in the afterburners and train up those tanking skills, there is going to be a torrent of destruction hellbent on finding your ship.

So what about you carebears? All is not lost for the industrialist at heart! In addition to an EVE proximity alert to keep you safe, all of the fighting will provide plenty of scrap metal. The empires and players need resources for the larger conflict and the usual struggles between corporations. Someone needs to make sure everyone in EVE is supplied with guns and ammunition. This means plenty of trading and market watching for players eager to make a few isk as gun runners. Stock up on Quafe and void ammo while you are browsing the market, you are going to need it!
EVE Online braces for total war in the expansion Empyrean Age originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 25 Apr 2008 18:30:00 EST. You can admire your opponent's incredible figures and then destroy them all in a bloodrage rivaling anything the orcs could ever imagine! Over at Blizzplanet, that is exactly the idea, but with less bloodrage. Figures of orcs, dragons, gnomes, and beasts from WoW impress us with their awesome, yet small, presence. The artwork, in our estimation, will blow your mind straight through the Dark Portal!

Beyond that, Upper Deck had a surprising announcement to make at this week's GAMA trade show. The folks behind your favorite rookie cards announced that they would be unveiling the Onyxia piece. We immediately ran to the center and applied more dots for a chance to catch a glimpse. The Onyxia figure, which is pictured about to devour some poor tank, looks amazing. Claiming some of the most talented sculptors from around the world on the design team, the WoW miniatures game is sure to make a big splash when the game hits shelves sometime in the fall of 2008.
World of Warcraft miniatures game brings conquest and art originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 24 Apr 2008 16:30:00 EST. "A 33 year old playing video games means neglected children and a very irritated wife." What? We call shenanigans! This is blasphemous and the speaker must be confronted! Someone else out there thinks the same thing. Matt Story, a columnist over at ClickZ, has an interesting article concerning the use of MMOs, and games in general, as tools for teaching, entertaining, and advertising. MMOs can offer us plenty of options beyond killing rats and looting the hammer of world destruction from the tiny little body.

Take for example a fear of heights. Perhaps standing on the edge of Outland and leaping off would help? Want to make a few more friends? MMOs have plenty of community events and groups. Need to train a staff of employees to bend to your will and worship your amazing powers? Second Life recently built a jean manufacturing plant complete with wages, training seminars, and shifts. When there's a will, there's a way. The possibilities are endless here people! Virtual worlds have so much to offer, beyond simply crafting, killing, and questing. We are glad to argue for the power of the MMO and tip our hats to you Matt.
MMOs are tools for more than just gaming originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 23 Apr 2008 10:00:00 EST. EVE is a big place, a really big place. Going from one end of the galaxy to the other not only takes an incredible amount of time, but it is also filled with numerous dangers. If you're not careful, you'll find yourself lost, surrounded, and a frozen testament to the power of missiles. Sure, there is that little in game map that you have to zoom into, plan your route, and then hope all is peachy along the way. However, it is confusing trying to navigate an escape route in three dimensions when it's you, your ore, and some angry rebel outlaws who just decided to say hello.

Though we are no where near a soothing voice telling us to "Warp to KLY-CO gate, avoid war zone, destination on right," we will soon have a booklet of useful maps to navigate by. What is so massively awesome about this? The maps are strategic maps. Want to put a mechanical parrot on your shoulder and pirate? They can tell you where useful choke points are. Want to PvP? Head down to a certain system and let loose the dogs of war. Want to mine peacefully while listening to Mozart? Go ahead and check out a few ice fields in empire. The maps should help get you to your destination easily and safely. If not, we still have clone vats and insurance to fall back on.
EVE strategic maps warping your way originally appeared on Massively on Sun, 20 Apr 2008 18:00:00 EST.
Over at Eurogamer, there was someone who felt the pain and found a way to get the job done. A few useful tips and tricks were jotted down for you to make your leveling experience more enjoyable. Tired of killing gnolls? Go for a swim in the river and laugh at murloc screams. Need to run from Loch Modan to the Wetlands? Run over to the dam and jump off to get there. Can't keep track of all those quests? Tips for that too! For your mental sanity, if nothing else, navigate yourself on over there, park your toon in the inn, and read up. Logging into WoW and seeing Taxman102 spamming the trade channel about new tax laws is not very normal. In fact, some people find that more frightening than an angry raid leader deprived of sleep. The real scary thing is, two governments are actually talking about it.

The US Congress sat down on the 1st of April and, despite the nature of the day, had a serious discussion on turning copper, isk, lindens, and doubloons into cold, hard, cash. Sweden also had some interesting things to say on taxing virtual transactions. What the heck is going on? Are W-4s going to start arriving from Blizzard addressed to Sirtradesalot of Destromath?

Luckily, the issue is not a problem for the players who deal solely in virtual property. For example, buying x item on the auction house for x gold. The issue affects those MMOs that utilize microtransactions as a part of their content or subscription methods. For each silver bought, there might be a small sales tax attached if the talk ever becomes reality. "I hope they take the servers down so I can go get a shower." It is good to see EVE has not changed since it first blinked into existence. So many memories, so many destroyed ships, so many hours spent hauling ore from can to station. As EVE approaches the five year mark on the 6th of May, public relations and communications director Valerie Massey docked her ship and logged off. Why did she log off exactly? To chat about EVE of course! What else is there to do when not playing EVE?

At five years, EVE is getting a bit on the old side in terms of MMOs. That didn't stop CCP of course. They gave EVE one hell of a Botox injection, hired an ex-commando for a trainer, and put the game into damn fine shape. Trinity was a huge testament to the ability of CCP and EVE to change and grow in very good ways. As Valerie says, the company itself started off with a handful of team members watching their dream become reality on a projector screen. They now employ over three hundred people and can claim a playerbase of over 200,000. From all of us at Massively, happy birthday! We hope the pod popping and ice mining continues for years to come.
EVE approaches fives years of virtual adventure originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 18 Apr 2008 10:30:00 EST.
Salty wenches, axe-wielding berserkers, and players stuck right in the middle of it all with a frosty ale in hand. Virtual life is so beautiful. Funcom promises to deliver this adult oriented gaming adventure through the upcoming MMO, Age of Conan. If you want the gory details on what AoC has to deliver, game designer Jason Stone sat down and took a few moments to pour some barbaric ale and tell his tale.

Jason explained to the folks over at Zergwatch that the AoC team was not about to compromise their devotion to the mature content that is part of the Conan world. There has been some criticism concerning the violence and other, more mature, content, but they are holding their ground. He was then asked about the approaching launch. Will we find ourselves at launch day with our blades blunt and our armor rusted? Hell no! Jason assures us that the team at Funcom has learned from the launch of Anarchy Online and that we can sharpen our blades and get right down to business starting on day one.

Head on over to that dark table in the corner of the Bestine bar and prepare yourself for a new sort of adventure.
Bounty hunters are the shadowy group of players chasing down criminals, traitors, or those poor souls who happen to be on someones naughty list. This eager group of players is encouraged to get these contracts closed as soon as possible. If you manage to successfully hunt down all of the fugitives on the list, rewards await you! Not only will a nice little gift be placed in your hands, but a trophy marking your accomplishment will be created in your honor. The hunt, which is part of Game Update 3, sounds like an invitation for mercenaries, rogues, disgruntled storm troopers, and grounded rebel pilots to earn a few extra credits. Sharpen your blade, practice some blaster skills on those pesky womp rats, and try your best to capture some of the most dangerous and evasive targets to plague the galaxy!

SWG offers rewards for taking down some notorious fugitives originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 16 Apr 2008 10:00:00 EST. Damage control units in tow, the CCP crew is making a valiant attempt to clear the space lanes of hazardous debris. This effort reached Massively in the form of a kind note and a link to a press release published earlier.

In response to allegations of a galaxy wide crack down on posters in the EVE forums, CCP announced that "there have been no mass bannings." They wish to remind everyone that discussions concerning compromising the source code on the forums are a violation of the EULA and Terms of Service. They are actively enforcing this policy and any attempts to violate it will be met with a torrent of anti-matter and pulse lasers.

As for the possibility of a security breach, CCP stated that they have completed an internal investigation. They have determined that the code was not leaked by an employee nor stolen. EVE, which is coded in Python, could easily have been decompiled. CCP says there is nothing to worry about since they have systems in place to protect the game. Your billing is safe, your stores of rockets and missiles are not at risk, and you can continue the business of destroying one another at any time.
CCP responds to EVE source code concerns originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 16 Apr 2008 07:00:00 EST. Pirates were eagerly tracking down their prey. Miners were digging into asteroids and hauling their goods back to station. Just when you thought it was safe to log in and join your fellow capsule pilots in a quest for money and power, news reached us that the source code for EVE had been stolen. The code has now made an appearance in the form of a torrent on a few notorious websites. Luckily for us, in space, no one can hear CCP scream.

The anonymous soul behind the theft supposedly flaunted the achievement to a CCP employee. If this is the case, sad memories of stolen lunch money and taunting bullies come to mind. As they brace to control the impact of the theft, CCP has stocked up on turret ammunition and kicked in the afterburners. They are reportedly seeding the stolen source code in an attempt to ban anyone downloading the file who also maintains an EVE account. This merciless tactic comes as quite a shock and some claim that this is a classic example of overreaction. In addition to this, users on the EVE forums who even mention the torrent are having their posts edited and locked or simply deleted. Bans are flying around the forums and EVE players are warned to do their best to avoid a collision.
We had to look through the list created by Next Generation a few times before coming to the conclusion that not one MMO made the list. We all do enjoy a damn fine game of Cooking Mama for the Wii, but where is World of Warcraft? Where is Lord of the Rings Online? Where are the MMOs? What sort of lunacy is this? Luckily, some explanation can be gathered through a nice little link that provides some analysis of the results and the selection criteria:

Numbers take into account only titles released and sold between March 1, 2007 and March 1, 2008

Each game only had to be released in one western territory to be included

Numbers take into account North America and Western Europe only

Numbers represent retail sales only

Turbine's creation, LotRO, neatly fits into qualifying requirements for the list compiled by Next Generation. Running on over to the LotRO website, one doesn't have to search too hard to find, "THE LORD OF THE RINGS ONLINE IS THE #1 SELLING PC GAME ACROSS NORTH AMERICA AND EUROPE." The number that fueled that claim is that over 600,000 copies of the game were on pre-order as the game was set for release. Estimates of actual subscribers vary, but, that should make the cut since they are tallying games sold. However, the rules explain that game sales are from retail outlets only, which discounts the online sales LotRO made.

MMOs have made a mark on the video game industry since their inception into the gaming world. They have sold hundreds of thousands of copies through download and retail venues through the original client and the expansions that follow. Refinement is needed in order to accurately portray the real numbers that are floating around out there.

[via Joystiq]
Not a single MMO in the top 100 games sold originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 15 Apr 2008 10:00:00 EST. The requirements for selection granted over 500 companies a close look by the judges. This contest was not contained to MMOs or even computer games. This was a selection ranging from banks to investment firms. Each company "had to demonstrate leadership among their peers in the following areas: innovation, market opportunity, commercialization, media buzz, and stakeholder value creation." That certainly crosses the threshold of addicting the masses to gathering boar snouts all day!

So, what did Turbine have to do to receive this honor? Obviously more than just designing online worlds; they had to prove they were worth their two cents on the market as well. Turbine managed to pull it off and CEO Jim Crowley made was happy to accept the honors. He remarked, "We are honored to be selected as one of the top 100 companies in the Northeast as it is a real validation of our success to date and of our strategy moving forward as we expand our product portfolio and our geographic footprint." Turbine's claims of running the number two MMO in the western market certainly seems more justified in this light. Receiving a top 100 award is a noteworthy accomplishment for a designer of MMOs. Tip of the hat, folks.
Turbine is selected as one of the northeast's top 100 companies originally appeared on Massively on Mon, 14 Apr 2008 21:00:00 EST. In a recent post to the PotBS community, Flying Lab designer Isildur discusses his views on the state of the economy. The basis is that Isildur, who mentions the economy as his baby, is not performing to specifications it was originally designed for. Players are making more than enough doubloons as traders, but PvPers are increasingly left behind.

As he states, "PvP is not sustainable without doing other non-PvP activities." The economy has fallen into the hands of the care-bear. That's not a bad thing, of course, since money is being made and doubloons are being generated. The problem lies in those warehouses so many folks in PotBS like to store things in. There are a lot of doubloons being generated into the hands of a few people and those coins aren't going anywhere. This leads to inflation which means PvPers, who don't necessarily make too much from PvP, are forced to partake in economic activities in order to stay afloat.
Continue reading Isildur speaks out on the state of PVP and the PotBS economy

Isildur speaks out on the state of PVP and the PotBS economy originally appeared on Massively on Sat, 12 Apr 2008 20:00:00 EST. The embattled co-founders of infamous gold selling agency IGE have decided to settle their differences. The court has approved the decision and it appears that the legal wrangling and mudslinging campaign has drawn to a close.

The two had filed suit against each other claiming disputes surrounding the distribution of bribes (both in real and virtual gifts), unethical business practices, and other various acts that would make your average gold seller look like a shining star in the corporate sky. Due to all of the legal trouble their company faces, it is not particularly surprising that the two would settle their differences. Unfortunately, we are not being told what the two have agreed to since the settlement is a closed affair. However, in order to make amends the two men have until the 14th of April to come to a decision in a settlement that could see a large chunk of cash changing hands.
IGE founders settle their legal dispute originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 10 Apr 2008 15:30:00 EST.
