Contributing to Massively

Massively is currently not hiring. Whenever we begin another round of hiring, we post up an announcement for interested readers. Please do not send unsolicited inquiries, articles, or resumes!

Massively contributors are divided into three groups: Lead Editors, who coordinate the writers; Contributing Editors, who submit news posts on a daily basis; and Columnists, who post on their specific areas of expertise on a weekly basis. We also support a secondary team of pro livestreamers and freelancers. We're all under contract through Weblogs, Inc., which is part of AOL. All of our writers and streamers are paid for their work. We cannot and do not accept unpaid or volunteer work.

Every hiring round will have its own set of specific requirements and instructions, so please follow the rules as laid out in any hiring post we do put up. The below should give you a good idea of how it works, however.

Here's what we look for in our writers:
  • An ability to follow instructions. Starting now!
  • A passion for MMOs. You needn't be the world's most hardcore player, but a breadth of knowledge in several games is ideal.
  • Solid writing skills. We don't have time to rewrite your work for you. Your application is your first test.
  • Commitment to writing. Contributing Editors submit a minimum of 50 posts per month (some do twice that). Columnists are expected to produce a 1000-to-1500-word column every week. Some columnists will be permitted to write extra news posts as well. You will not be playing free games all day long in this job.
  • Possession of a computer, reliable internet, basic html- and image-editing skills.
  • Work eligibility wherever you're located. Bloggers outside the U.S. must have a bank account and be able to accept payments by wire transfer. We cannot hire anyone under the age of 18.
  • Real-world contactability via email, phone, or instant message.
When we're hiring, we usually ask potential writers to submit an application with the following:
  • Complete contact information, including your full name, full address, phone number, email address, and any instant messenger accounts at which you can be reached.
  • An explanation of why you're the right person for the job.
  • An overview of your gaming experience, favorite characters, classes, levels, achievements, and goals. Those applying for a Columnist position should focus on the game for which they plan to write. Contributing Editor-hopefuls should be more broad.
  • (Contributing Editors Only) Three sample posts in the style of a typical Massively news post.
  • (Contributing Editors Only) Three links to posts on Massively that you feel exemplify our best content.
  • (Contributing Editors Only) Three suggestions for improving Massively.
  • (Columnists Only) Ten sample topics you will explore in your column, with a brief outline of each topic and a reason that it's compelling content that Massively should produce.
  • (Columnists Only) One sample column of around 500 words (this will be shorter than your real work for us, but we don't have time to read a novel).
Applications should be mailed to apply@massively.com within the specified time frame. The subject line of the email must include your full name and the title of the position for which you're applying (i.e., JOHN DOE -- Contributing Editor). Do not send attachments; do include all information in the body of your email. Do not format your email with excess font styling and images. The lead editors will review all applications and contact you from there if we like what we see. Due to the number of applications we receive, we cannot respond to all submissions nor acknowledge receipt of your work. Payment and contract details are disclosed during the contracting process and are considered confidential terms.

Additional questions can be submitted to the staff on our contact page. Good luck and thanks for your interest!
