For this latest <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook">Tattered Notebook</a>, I'd already planned -- and in fact was in the middle of -- writing impressions of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/scars-of-the-awakened/"><em>Scars of the Awakened</em></a>, <em><a href="https://www.everquest2.com/">EverQuest II's</a></em> most recent meaty update. I've collected a slew of notes taken from the adventurer and crafter questlines, including some tips and time-saving tricks. But amidst all that intense update research (I gladly sacrifice myself for you guys!), I got distracted. And no, it wasn't by a shiny!<br />
<br />
You see, although the land of Cobalt Scar opened up just over a month ago, I've been pulled away and unable to complete everything I want to in that zone. Why? Because in that same time, there have been multiple city festivals, a round of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/18/tattered-notebook-a-guide-to-eqiis-moonlight-enchantments-an/">Moonlight Enchantments</a> (with new quests and brand-new housing items that were a must have), a double XP weekend that just begged for some serious crafting advancement, a commissioned housing project to complete, personal houses to decorate, old quests to finally finish up... and that was just to start!<br />
<br />
As the guilt for not finishing the entirety of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GU66/">GU66</a> settled in, friends who weren't as high-level as I wanted to play together in areas they had access to, which coincidentally did not include the latest update. So off I ran through older zones and dungeons with lower-leveled friends. Needless to say, my in-game adventures of late have stretched all over the map of Norrath. Sounds busy, no? It was during all this that I had to finally lay my delusions of finishing everything I have planned before <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next">EverQuest Next</a></em> to rest; there's just too much to do in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII</em></a>!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/08/tattered-notebook-theres-too-much-to-do-in-everquest-ii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tattered Notebook: There's too much to do in EverQuest II!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/08/tattered-notebook-theres-too-much-to-do-in-everquest-ii/">Tattered Notebook: There's too much to do in EverQuest II!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 08 Jun 2013 18:00:00 EST. A curious thing happened as I was strolling through <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> this past week. It seems there was a bit of commotion in the Norrathian community, with races good and evil cheering and dancing in the streets. Personally, I didn't even know Sarnak could move like that! What was the catalyst of this celebration? Why, didn't you hear -- there was news about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a>! And with the scarcity of that kind of treasure, it's understandable that folks went a'frolicking. But this wasn't just any old news, either. This week, fans learned that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/emily-taylor/">Emily "Domino" Taylor</a>, also known as Pentapod, was returning to the <em>EverQuest</em> franchise as the producer for <em>EQ Next</em>.<br />
<br />
Can the presence of just one person really send prospective players into a tizzy of anticipation? Yes, it can. I watched as a number of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii">EQII</a></em> players, once ambivalent or on the fence about <em>EQN</em>, not only look twice at the upcoming sandbox but hop right on over into the newest Norrath's camp. More eyes than ever are watching the development of this game (even though there is scant little to watch at the moment). And this is why.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/25/the-tattered-notebook-eq-next-ranks-swell-with-the-known/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: EQ Next scoops up Emily 'Domino' Taylor</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/25/the-tattered-notebook-eq-next-ranks-swell-with-the-known/">The Tattered Notebook: EQ Next scoops up Emily 'Domino' Taylor</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 25 May 2013 18:00:00 EST. Lately, there have been a number of topics all vying for my attention here in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook">Tattered Notebook</a>. In a couple of instances, some of them got a little rough and started pushing the others around to try for a better place in line. Yet all the while, <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> Moonlight Enchantments has been patiently waiting. So as a reward (we do like to reward good behavior here!), that quiet little topic is getting the spotlight in a special bonus edition. And the timing couldn't be more perfect!<br />
<br />
You see, initially this guide was just going to focus on speed to help you get through that short two-day event that comes but once a month on the 20th and 21st in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII</em></a>. Now, however, we get to delve into the changes and new things coming to the Enchanted Grottoes, from even more housing items (yes, that's on top of the new additions in March) to two new repeatable quests to earn the tokens to buy the items. And with this month's festival right around the corner, having a game plan ready to get the most out of those two days will benefit new and old players alike.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/18/tattered-notebook-a-guide-to-eqiis-moonlight-enchantments-an/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tattered Notebook: A guide to EQII's Moonlight Enchantments (with new stuff!)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/18/tattered-notebook-a-guide-to-eqiis-moonlight-enchantments-an/">Tattered Notebook: A guide to EQII's Moonlight Enchantments (with new stuff!)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 18 May 2013 20:00:00 EST. It's like they know me! You'd think with all the bag functionalities that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE</a> has introduced to <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> this year that the devs have watched my livestreams and taken pity on me and my storage predicament. And it didn't stop with just one new addition; even after one set of sorting capabilities was released, another set came along. With all these new organizational tools, there is a chance even I might actually find something in my oft-overstuffed bags. (Clean bags, however, is another matter entirely and not likely to be resolved!)<br />
<br />
Now bag sorting in and of itself really doesn't sound like a big deal, the kind complete with flashing lights and a ticker-tape parade. It's not. In fact, it's pretty much a little thing... well, except for micro-managers and packrats, of course. So why in heavens would I be spending time talking about piddly updates in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/">EQII</a></em> when such <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/30/eqiis-scars-of-the-awakened-highlights-the-story-through-art/">an expansive one</a> recently released? Because getting the little things (and getting them with regularity) <em>is</em> big. The subject of minor updates warrants just as much attention as a named one like <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/scars-of-the-awakened/">Scars of the Awakened</a></em>, both for what the updates are and for what they portend. And those updates bode well for everyone.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/11/tattered-notebook-its-the-little-things-that-count-in-eqii-up/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tattered Notebook: It's the little things that count in EQII updates</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/11/tattered-notebook-its-the-little-things-that-count-in-eqii-up/">Tattered Notebook: It's the little things that count in EQII updates</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 11 May 2013 14:00:00 EST. OMG! It's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a> news! No, really. I'm not pulling your chain. So go ahead and do your finally-some-news celebratory dance, I'll wait a moment. Just don't go all out and strain something; you'll want to be able to spring into celebration again when more is revealed, right?<br />
<br />
Sadly, the news is pretty much summed up right there in that one sentence; we don't have any more details to revel in and no time frame for getting more (well, other than SOE Live, of course!). But when has a lack of specifics derailed fan excitement about an upcoming game? Well we may not have definitive details, but using what we know about <em>Storybricks</em>, we can certainly speculate on what the relationship between the two means for Norrath's next incarnation.<br />
<br />
And if there was ever a relationship I was happy to see, it's <em>Storybricks</em> and <em>EverQuest Next's</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/27/tattered-notebook-eq-next-and-storybricks-sitting-in-a-tree/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tattered Notebook: EQ Next and Storybricks, sitting in a tree...</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/27/tattered-notebook-eq-next-and-storybricks-sitting-in-a-tree/">Tattered Notebook: EQ Next and Storybricks, sitting in a tree...</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 27 Apr 2013 16:00:00 EST. With last Wednesday's release of <em><a href="https://www.everquest2.com/">EverQuest II's</a></em> latest prestige home, the totally awesome Hua Mein Retreat, I couldn't help but be focused on one of my favorite gaming features. I toured the new home, got to check out the break-out spots, and marveled at how pro <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE</a> is with housing. Sure, there have been some misses when it comes to the prestige options, but things just keep getting better. Before long, my thoughts turned to the idea of housing in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Obviously, I am excited to play <em>EverQuest Next</em>. How could I not be? This studio has cornered the market on the most fun classes I have ever played (Dancer, Disciple, Fury, and Shaman) and the best housing systems I've personally had the pleasure to delve into <em>(</em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-galaxies"><em>Star Wars Galaxies</em></a>, <a href="https://www.vanguardthegame.com/"><em>Vanguard</em></a>, and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii">EverQuest II</a></em>). And now it's making another sandbox.<br />
<br />
But will <em>EQN</em> pull me permanently away from <em>EQII</em>, a game where I've earned my seven-year vet rewards? That, my friends, will depend in large part on the housing.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/13/the-tattered-notebook-can-eq-nexts-housing-measure-up-to-everq/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Can EQ Next's housing measure up to EverQuest II's?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/13/the-tattered-notebook-can-eq-nexts-housing-measure-up-to-everq/">The Tattered Notebook: Can EQ Next's housing measure up to EverQuest II's?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 13 Apr 2013 16:00:00 EST. If you were even slightly luckier than I, you had the chance to traipse through the Chronoportals of <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> most recent event. The events inside these portals are a nod to the game's older sibling, the original <a href="https://www.everquest.com/"><em>EverQuest</em></a>, and include landscapes, characters, and dialogue that reflect that first incarnation of Norrath. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest"><em>EQ</em></a> vets understood the inside jokes and humor, who then had to explain it to us young <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EQII</em></a> whippersnappers who'd never experienced the situations featured.<br />
<br />
Even though I missed out on this year's event (I was too busy trying to weasel some <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EQ Next</em></a> information out of folks at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013/">GDC</a> for you), it got me thinking: If <em>EQII</em> has Chronoportals back to <em>EQ</em>, will <em>EQ Next</em> have some back to <em>EQII</em>? And if so, what iconic moments should be immortalized in the next incarnation of Norrath?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/31/tattered-notebook-what-chronoportals-to-eqii-would-you-put-in-e/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tattered Notebook: What Chronoportals to EQII would you put in EQ Next?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/31/tattered-notebook-what-chronoportals-to-eqii-would-you-put-in-e/">Tattered Notebook: What Chronoportals to EQII would you put in EQ Next?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 31 Mar 2013 14:00:00 EST. There is no two ways about it: Every time I started to pen this particular piece, I had to pause. You see, the story behind it all is steeped in emotion; inspiration, joy, pride, sadness, and togetherness are all a part of the heartwarming tale that is simply impossible to not be touched by (or in my case, completely choked up). And it's one that makes me proud to be a part of the <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> community.<br />
<br />
Last year we shared with you the story of a young boy whose simple wish for a fun place to play in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/17/the-tattered-notebook-the-touching-story-of-ribbitribbit-and-th/"><em>EQII</em></a> brought the community together in an unparalleled way. In order to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/17/the-tattered-notebook-the-touching-story-of-ribbitribbit-and-th/">make an extra special place for Ribbitribbit</a>, adventurers, raiders, and crafters left their guilds -- heck, even their servers -- to come aid in what became more than a simple island refuge. It became a multi-house playground that included a Tier 3 guild hall. The sheer volume of enthusiastic participation is enough to make any heart swell. Sadly, shortly thereafter Ribbitribbit lost his battle with cancer, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/26/the-tattered-notebook-the-passing-of-ribbitribbitt/">that same community mourned his passing</a>. Now, one year later, the same organizer who uncorked that first outpouring of generosity has brought players together again to commemorate community, continue philanthropy, and remember those who have been lost.<br />
<br />
Today's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a> invites you to become a part of this community with a look at Ribbitribbit Day 2013.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/16/the-tattered-notebook-eqiis-ribbitribbit-day-celebrates-commun/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: EQII's Ribbitribbit Day celebrates community</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/16/the-tattered-notebook-eqiis-ribbitribbit-day-celebrates-commun/">The Tattered Notebook: EQII's Ribbitribbit Day celebrates community</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 16 Mar 2013 14:00:00 EST. When <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> first went <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/06/soe-releases-eqii-age-of-discovery-expansion-freeport-revamp-f/">free-to-play</a> in December 2011, a number of long-lost players poked their noses back into the game. But even before that, and certainly since then, veteran players have found cause to return to Norrath after a (sometimes very) prolonged absence. And why not? There are plenty of great things to lose yourself in within <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII</em></a>... as well as plenty of ways to feel lost! Invariably, those who have been gone for any length of time are confronted with a doozy of a headache-inducer upon their return: alternate advancements.<br />
<br />
Back in the dark recesses of time, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">The Tattered Notebook</a> brought you a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/27/the-tattered-notebook-a-newbie-look-at-alternate-advancement/">newbie guide to these AA points</a>. But much has changed in the ensuing two years, including the AAs. So it behooves us to take another look and update our information. The following is my personal journey with that at times intimidating system, sprinkled with tips, tricks, and tales of woe I've picked up along the way.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/02/the-tattered-notebook-attacked-by-aas-in-eqii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Attacked by AAs in EQII</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/02/the-tattered-notebook-attacked-by-aas-in-eqii/">The Tattered Notebook: Attacked by AAs in EQII</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 02 Mar 2013 14:00:00 EST. So let's talk about adornments in <a href="http://www.everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>. If you're a relatively casual <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EQII</em></a> player like I am, you may not have any adornments on your gear. Heck, you may not even know what adornments are or why you might want them! <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook">The Tattered Notebook</a> is here for you, and while adorning can seem like an unnecessary pain in the butt at first, availing yourself of the system will make your avatars much more powerful in the long run.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/23/the-tattered-notebook-getting-started-with-everquest-ii-adornme/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Getting started with EverQuest II adornments</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/23/the-tattered-notebook-getting-started-with-everquest-ii-adornme/">The Tattered Notebook: Getting started with EverQuest II adornments</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 23 Feb 2013 14:00:00 EST. Ahh, l'amore. You can feel it in their air tonight, no? Oh wait, that was Thursday! No matter, 'tis still the season of love and loot in Norrath.<br />
<br />
Did I say loot? You bet your barbarian love notes I did! Holidays in <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> may be inspired by their real-world counterparts, but their true purpose lies in supplying us with oodles of special loot. Don't believe me? Just look at the plethora of items available from quests, crafting, and collections during any given celebration. Sure, there are fun lore lines to follow as well, and that aspect certainly deserves a nod, but there is no denying the prominence of holiday paraphernalia that fills our bags, banks, and vaults.<br />
<br />
Not that I am complaining, mind you; it's precisely this loot I am after -- specifically, the housing items. As a die-hard decorating nut, I look forward to the holidays like Erollisi Day to get my hands/paws/claws on these unique items offered only during the events. Unfortunately, like many of us plagued by real life, I don't always have tons of time to devote to the festivities, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII's</em></a> holidays are pretty elaborate affairs with a whole lot to do. So to help us both get the most treasure for our time, I've devised this speed guide to getting the holiday goods before the festival ends at 2:59 a.m EST on February 21st.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/16/the-tattered-notebook-a-guide-to-getting-erollisi-day-spoils-fo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: A guide to getting Erollisi Day spoils for the time-impaired</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/16/the-tattered-notebook-a-guide-to-getting-erollisi-day-spoils-fo/">The Tattered Notebook: A guide to getting Erollisi Day spoils for the time-impaired</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 16 Feb 2013 14:00:00 EST. I was going to update you fine folk on my adventures in rolling my 17,000th <a href="http://www.everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> alt for this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook">Tattered Notebook</a>, but <a href="http://www.soe.com">SOE</a> decided to drop a <strike>Fan Faire</strike> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/02/soe-live-scheduled-for-august-planet-hollywood/">Live date</a> on us, which sort of mucked up my nefarious plans.<br />
<br />
Why do we care about SOE Live? Well, there are multiple reasons, but the most important one is that instead of having to wait until October, we now get to see (and touch!) <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a> in early August!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/09/the-tattered-notebook-what-i-want-to-see-in-everquest-next/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: What I want to see in EverQuest Next</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/09/the-tattered-notebook-what-i-want-to-see-in-everquest-next/">The Tattered Notebook: What I want to see in EverQuest Next</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 09 Feb 2013 14:00:00 EST. It's time to talk experimentation in <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>. No, I don't mean sniffing, snorting, smoking, or otherwise illicitly subjecting yourself to the various flora in Norrath; I'm referring to one of the three new crafting prestige lines introduced with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Chains-of-Eternity/"><em>Chains of Eternity</em></a>. As I'm an armorer, gear augmentation definitely seemed the most relevant to my trade. (Besides, can you just see me cranking out 100 breastplates at a time?!) So as I leveled through the 90s, I started plopping those prestige points into that middle line and looked forward to the day I could beef up my armor.<br />
<br />
But let's face it -- I don't always choose things on the basis of logic; a Vulcan, I am not. What actually drew me to the experimentation prestige line, even before I had any clue what it would do, was a remark from the devs during the panel and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/24/soe-live-2012-everquest-ii-interviews-highlight-focus-on-crafti/">my interview</a> at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE-Live-2012/">SOE Live</a>: that failure was an option! Experimentation became <em>the</em> choice because it would bring back some of the feel of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/">EQII's</a></em> original crafting. You vets out there will know what I am talking about -- when there was some real risk involved in crafting and your skill meant something. I may still not have the chance to die at the forge anymore (booo!), but failure with experimentation comes with much more of a bite.<br />
<br />

So the last time we talked <a href="http://www.everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>, I confessed that coming back to the game felt a lot like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/12/the-tattered-notebook-why-i-came-back-to-everquest-ii/">coming home</a>. That's still true, in more ways than I first realized. I don't know about you, but when I return after a lengthy absence I have an overwhelming urge to get things done. As I look around the place and figure out what's changed, what needs fixing, and what seems like fun, I tend to get overwhelmed, too, because there's just a lot of <em>stuff</em> that needs doing.<br />
<br />
That's exactly what happened to me in Norrath over the past two weeks. I logged in with my 92 Sage and my 92 Shadowknight, surveyed their vast array of abilities and possibilities, and promptly threw up my hands.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/26/the-tattered-notebook-decisional-paralysis-in-everquest-ii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Decisional paralysis in EverQuest II</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/26/the-tattered-notebook-decisional-paralysis-in-everquest-ii/">The Tattered Notebook: Decisional paralysis in EverQuest II</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 26 Jan 2013 14:00:00 EST. Two weeks ago I closed my <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/05/the-tattered-notebook-tips-and-tricks-to-start-the-new-year-in/">handy tips and tricks guide</a> by encouraging players to shun power-leveling in <a href="http://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>. At that point, I touched on the issue by talking about how you miss so much of the game by skipping all the stories and lore in the quests. I even cautioned that people hesitate to group with someone who doesn't yet know his or her class. But the reasons to avoid it go so much deeper than what I mentioned there. There are definite pitfalls when characters are power-leveled, even for the folks who have other max-level characters!<br />
<br />
Some may be wondering why this topic is hot enough at the moment to warrant more of my attention. As those of you who read level 1-9 chat already know, there was recently a massive surge in power-leveling services and a population explosion of max-level characters, all due to the unexpected consequences of combining the new experimentation crafting prestige line with playing as your character in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/20/some-assembly-required-a-look-at-eqiis-dungeon-maker/">Dungeon Maker</a>. While this latest power-leveling scheme has been negated (thanks to last Tuesday's patch), many folks are feeling the fallout of using the service.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/19/the-tattered-notebook-pitfalls-of-powerleveling-in-eqii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Pitfalls of powerleveling in EQII</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/19/the-tattered-notebook-pitfalls-of-powerleveling-in-eqii/">The Tattered Notebook: Pitfalls of powerleveling in EQII</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 19 Jan 2013 16:00:00 EST. When I log into <a href="http://www.everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> after a long absence, I feel a little bit like a world-weary vagabond who's finally earned a rest. I see myself -- or my avatar, at least -- dropping his luggage on a familiar front porch and surveying the surroundings he vividly remembers despite months (sometimes years) of travel abroad.<br />
<br />
There's a fine coating of dust on the furniture. The neighborhood has a bunch of new rules and as many new neighbors. All in all, though, the spires of Freeport and its refurbished waterfront are a welcome sight. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EQII</em></a> has always been the one MMO that I return to without fail; it's also the one that I've played the most, now that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-galaxies"><em>Star Wars Galaxies</em></a> is gone.<br />
<br />
This time around, I'm coming back not for an expansion or a new feature (although there are plenty of both in the world's deepest themepark) but rather for the need for a little MMO stability. And hey, I'd be lying if I said I'm not partly motivated by the promise of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EQNext</em></a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/12/the-tattered-notebook-why-i-came-back-to-everquest-ii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Why I came back to EverQuest II</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/12/the-tattered-notebook-why-i-came-back-to-everquest-ii/">The Tattered Notebook: Why I came back to EverQuest II</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 12 Jan 2013 16:00:00 EST. Hellllloooooo fellow Norrathians! It is I, MJ -- the intrepid explorer, with a penchant for lightning and fire. And am I excited to be here!<br />
<br />
Right about now you may be noticing a slight change in authorship of your favorite <a href="http://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> column. You aren't seeing things; through a marvelous confluence of events (and no, I don't mean kidnapping <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/karen-bryan">Karen Bryan</a> and locking her in a dank cell in Freeport!), I have the opportunity to share my love of this game with you alongside another Norrathian denizen, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/jef-reahard">Jef Reahard</a>. And any of you who have seen me gallivanting about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EQII's</em></a> many lands on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/livestream">Massively TV</a> every <em>EverQuest Two</em>-sday can attest to the fact I really do love this game. So it is with no shortage of glee that I begin my first <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a> entry.<br />
<br />
<em>Feastday, Blossoming 7, of the year 3897</em><br />
<br />
Throughout my most recent journeys, I have noticed that there is a good chunk of population that has either returned to the lands after a lengthy absence (not unlike yours truly a few years back) or is pretty new. For both groups, there are a number of little things that may be unknown or forgotten; heck, I've played for a long time and am still discovering these things! So today I am going to share with you a few of the tips and tricks I have learned for a smoother Norrathian life.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/05/the-tattered-notebook-tips-and-tricks-to-start-the-new-year-in/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Tips and tricks to start the new year in EQII</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/05/the-tattered-notebook-tips-and-tricks-to-start-the-new-year-in/">The Tattered Notebook: Tips and tricks to start the new year in EQII</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 05 Jan 2013 16:00:00 EST. As the year comes to a close, it's really amazing to look back and follow the twisty path of <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II's</em></a> evolution. This past year in particular stood out for me because the first half was marked by unconventional (some would say radical) ideas that broke away from the <a href="http://everquest.com"><em>EverQuest</em></a> tradition. The second half, though, revealed a return to the game's roots, and to what longtime players associate with the <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest/">EQ</a> </em>franchise.<br />
<br />
In fact, when I look back even further, there are many things I've really come to appreciate in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII</em></a>, and I miss them when I'm playing other MMOs that don't have them. So in this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>, I'm meeting up with the <em>EQII </em>ghosts of Frostfell past, present, and future to look at what I love most about the game and what I want to see in the game as we approach 2013.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/29/the-tattered-notebook-my-eqii-journey-with-the-ghosts-of-frostf/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: My EQII journey with the ghosts of Frostfell</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/29/the-tattered-notebook-my-eqii-journey-with-the-ghosts-of-frostf/">The Tattered Notebook: My EQII journey with the ghosts of Frostfell</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 29 Dec 2012 16:00:00 EST. This past week saw the arrival of two big events in <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>: Frostfell and a free 15-day gold membership upgrade to all former players. This is actually a great time for players to give <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EQII</em></a> a try, not only because of the promo but because of the return of Frostfell. Frostfell is a festive dim sum of the best of what <em>EQII </em>offers. There's crafting, fun minigames, and a more in-depth dungeon crawl that you can do solo or with friends. And most of the rewards are perfect for the house-decorating community, another nice side of <em>EQII</em>.<br />
<br />
Let's look at the details of the promo for returning players and then take a look at what those players should be sure to check out during Frostfell.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/22/the-tattered-notebook-why-frostfell-and-the-gold-member-promo-a/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Why Frostfell and the Gold member promo are a perfect fit</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/22/the-tattered-notebook-why-frostfell-and-the-gold-member-promo-a/">The Tattered Notebook: Why Frostfell and the Gold member promo are a perfect fit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 22 Dec 2012 16:00:00 EST. Just a few days ago, <a href="http://soe.com">SOE</a> launched the first wave of items submitted by players through <a href="https://player-studio.soe.com/">Player Studio</a>. <a href="http://everquest.com"><em>EverQuest</em></a>, <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>, and <a href="http://freerealms.com"><em>Free Realms</em></a> all have player-made items for sale in the Marketplace; the players who created the items receive 40% of the revenue. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest/"><em>EverQuest</em></a> launched its first player-made weapon, the Stormlord's Bludgeon; <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> featured the Heroic Salesman's Chest and Cloak of the North Star; and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/free-realms/"><em>Free Realms</em></a> revealed the Swirly Railed Gazebo and Happy Heart T-Shirt.<br />
<br />
We had a chance to talk to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/rick-reynolds">Rick Reynolds</a>, Senior Manager of SOE's E-Commerce team, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/joe-shoopack">Joe Shoopack</a>, Director of Artistic Development, both of whom have played key roles in the successful launch of Player Studio. They shared insight into what goes on behind the scenes after a player submits an item, and they hinted at future plans for the system.
