The Stream Team: Grand finale edition, February 24 - March 2, 2014

Polls, MMO Industry, Massively Meta, Livestream, Miscellaneous, The Stream Team

Like two-hour movie specials that end a favorite series or the final fireworks on the Fourth of July, wouldn't it be neat if everything in life had a grand finale? You know, something really special to wrap everything up neatly before you have to move on? Granted, grand finales are by their very nature bittersweet; their whole reason for being is the end of something which you may not have wanted to end. But you can't stop it, so why not make the best of it? Done with work for the day? Join a jubilee! Is the weekend over? Celebration central! Finished with my homework? Party time... oh wait, that already happens enough (with or without the "finished" part!). And The Stream Team is right here with live shows and reruns on Massively TV to help you get the gala going.

SOE teases Landmark development plan, polls build contests

Fantasy, Polls, Game Mechanics, New Titles, News Items, PvE, Free-to-Play, EverQuest Next, Dev Diaries, Player-Generated Content, MMORPG

EverQuest Next Landmark
Sony Online Entertainment director of development Dave Georgeson has posted a new update over on the official EverQuest Next Landmark forum outlining the team's plans for moving forward and asking players for opinions on possible upcoming build contests. In the post, Georgeson notes that SOE's first order of business with Landmark is focusing on communications, rating systems, and ways for players to better cooperate with one another. Teams will also be working on systems like combat, AI, and water.

Additionally, Georgeson revealed that SOE is going to start running Landmark building contests. The first contest revolves around designing a landmark for island hubs, but future contests are left up to a poll in the post. Choices include homages to buildings in previous EverQuest games, new architecture for Norrath, and genre-specific contests that center on modern, sci-fi, or fantasy designs.

You can vote for your preference on Georgeson's forum post.

The Stream Team: Spring or else edition, January 27 - February 2, 2014

Polls, Massively Meta, Livestream, Miscellaneous, The Stream Team

After a month that involved a polar vortices and a polar plunge (I'm surprised we didn't end up with polar bears!), I know a number of people who are threatening to carry out bodily harm to a certain weather-forecasting critter if he deigns to suggest that winter will be extended. Spring or the groundhog gets it! That's the cry I hear around these parts. Hopefully it doesn't come to that, but if you have any furry friends show up on your doorstep this week asking for asylum, you just might want to grant it. Invite them in to watch some Stream Team adventures on Massively TV. And whatever you do, keep them out of the sun on February 2nd!

Choose My Adventure: Back in the saddle again edition

Polls, Opinion, Massively Meta, Hands-On, Choose My Adventure, Miscellaneous

Yeeehaw! Now that Mike has finished his ride, they're lettin' me back in the saddle for another round of rootin' tootin' Choose My Adventure fun! And the opportunity has come not a moment too soon: I've had my spurs on and been raring to go for weeks now. As you know, this ain't my first CMA rodeo, and I'm sure as shootin' excited for this next wild romp through a new world.

Of course, I won't be doing this alone. This ain't a one-woman show, and you ain't just spectators. I'm the rider all right, but y'all actually have a hold of the reins and will be leading me through the adventures. I'll wrangle up some options each week, and y'all will make the choices for what we do, where we go, and how we get there. Our first choice: which game we're going to tame!

I've corralled a herd of titles that ain't seen their time in the spotlight yet (or at least, not for a long, long time). We've got an assortment of breeds to choose from -- some I've the barest hint of experience with; with others, I've none at all. Look 'em over, size 'em up, and then tag the one you want us to spend our next six weeks in. Y'all have until 11:59 p.m. EST on Saturday, January 25th, to make your selection. Then we rope the winner and get this ride started.

Choose My Adventure: So long, Allods Online

Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Polls, MMO Industry, PvE, Free-to-Play, Hands-On, Choose My Adventure, Allods Online, MMORPG

Allods Online
Choose My Adventure, in my mind, is as much an investigation as it is a voter-led romp through a particular title. There's a reason each writer who takes on a CMA limits the voting pool to games he or she hasn't previously experienced in-depth; it's always more interesting to discover and explore than it is to travel across well-beaten paths. Writing and playing for Choose My Adventure almost always involves being surprised, either for the better or for the worse.

When the community chose Allods Online as the subject of this edition of Choose My Adventure, I was skeptical. The game looks, on the surface, like another cheap World of Warcraft knock-off designed to siphon a few players away from Blizzard's enormous subscription MMO with promises of free gameplay and some sci-fi/steampunk tweaks. What I discovered over the last five weeks, however, is a solid, charming traditional MMO that is hindered at almost every turn by the incompetence or greed (I can't be sure which) of its publisher.

First RuneScape poll invites players to choose big update

First RuneScape poll letting players choose the big update
In a move to ensure that RuneScape's continued direction is shaped at a grassroots level by its players, Jagex has introduced an in-game polling system and launched the first question: Invention skill vs. Elf City –- which do you want first? If you have a preference as to which content releases first, you have until January 31st to log in and vote.

The series of polls -- part of the company's Power to the Players strategy for this next year -- will involve monthly Dragonstone questions on major topics like the one presented as well as more frequent Diamond and Ruby polls, which focus on mid- to low-tier topics like what dragon to add to the game and themes of holiday festivals.

The Stream Team: Human Popsicles edition, January 13 - 19, 2014

Snow sharks one week, polar vortexes the next: What happened to just raining cats and dogs? The weather is a zoo!

Maybe you were in a part of the country that didn't turn people into popsicles this past week; if so, count yourself lucky. Many of us couldn't leave our houses and were forced to game furiously to keep warm! Wait... maybe we were actually the lucky ones! Choose My Adventure: Deep in the dungeons of Allods Online

Fantasy, Polls, PvE, Free-to-Play, Hands-On, Choose My Adventure, Allods Online, Miscellaneous, Subscription, MMORPG

Allods Online
Last week, I presented Choose My Adventure voters with one simple choice: Where, exactly, should we go next in Allods Online? The community responded by sending my low-level Psionicist directly into what many consider to be a core component of the modern fantasy MMO, the instanced dungeon. Understanding how a game approaches bosses, loot, grouping, and raiding is key in understanding that game's design philosophy, so it makes sense to dip a toe or two into the instanced content Allods has to offer.

Assuming, of course, that I can find a group.

Choose My Adventure: Allods Online's compelling crafting

Fantasy, Polls, Video, PvE, Free-to-Play, Hands-On, Choose My Adventure, Allods Online, Livestream, Miscellaneous, Subscription, MMORPG

Allods Online
While it may seem longer due to holidays with family and other time-crunching stresses, it has been just one short week since our last jaunt into the community-chosen Allods Online. In that first glance, we created a brand-new Arisen character, gave him a few magical abilities, and set off on a course for action and adventure. Quests were completed, loot was packed up, and enemies were destroyed.

This week, based on the results of last week's Choose My Adventure polls, we slowed things down. The community elected to stop and smell the roses and to pick up a crafting profession along the way. Taking a moment to observe details in Allods Online's character and environment design helps emphasize the title's unique and attractive aesthetic, which isn't much of a surprise. But our baby steps into the title's leatherworking profession unveiled an engaging and nuanced crafting system that's sure to deliver big payoffs down the line.

Choose My Adventure: Life as an Arisen in Allods Online

Fantasy, Polls, Video, PvE, Free-to-Play, Hands-On, Choose My Adventure, Allods Online, Livestream, Miscellaneous, Subscription, MMORPG

Allods Online
The Massively community answered loud and clear when I asked who, what, and how I should play in Allods Online. Voters in last week's Choose My Adventure poll sent me along the path of the Empire in the shoes of an Arisen and equipped me with a Psionicist's dagger along the way. The community also favored the subscription server over the free-to-play server, with some voters claiming Allods is too "pay-to-win" on the free-to-play server and others simply expressing curiosity about whether they'd see a difference between the paid and free versions of the game.

With those voted handled and counted, my adventure had officially begun.
