Fan outcry over the announcement of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-elder-scrolls-online"><em>The Elder Scrolls Online</em></a> was long and loud, not just for the presumed MMOification of a beloved single-player franchise, but for the toolset chosen by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/zenimax-online-studios">ZeniMax Online Studios</a> to bring the world of Tamriel to its new audience.<br />
<br />
Game Informer confirms that ZeniMax is using the <a href="http://www.heroengine.com/">HeroEngine</a> -- which also powers <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>, and which has come under fire from some in the MMO fan community. Game director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/matt-firor">Matt Firor</a> says that the firm isn't using the engine like you may expect, though.<br />
<br />
"Think of HeroEngine as a whiteboard for us -- a great tool to get some ideas in the game and start looking at them while the production engine was in development," he explains.<br />
<br />

<a href="http://www.soe.com">Sony Online Entertainment</a> has begun carpet-bombing media outlets with publicity relating to its upcoming <a href="http://www.planetside2.com"><em>PlanetSide 2</em></a> MMOFPS. The game has been in development for quite a while now, but up until very recently the devs have kept a low profile. Now the title's Twitter feed is exploding on a daily basis, awe-inspiring <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/take-to-the-skies-with-planetside-2s-aerial-combat-trailer/">alpha gameplay videos</a> are finding their way into the public eye, and interviews abound.<br />
<br />
I managed to get creative director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/matt-higby">Matt Higby's</a> attention for a few moments, and he's got some interesting things to say about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planetside-2"><em>PS2's</em></a> upside. Would you believe that MMOFPS is about to become a new industry buzzword? Read on after the break.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/26/the-firing-line-planetside-2s-matt-higby-on-the-mmofps-revolut/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Firing Line: PlanetSide 2's Matt Higby on the MMOFPS revolution</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/26/the-firing-line-planetside-2s-matt-higby-on-the-mmofps-revolut/">The Firing Line: PlanetSide 2's Matt Higby on the MMOFPS revolution</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 26 May 2012 12:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/26/the-daily-grind-do-you-stay-loyal-to-your-mmo-guild/"><img alt="Ultima Online wedding, my guild as honor guard, circa 1998" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/uo18.jpg" /></a></div>
When I joined a guild in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Ultima-Online/">Ultima Online</a></em> in 1997, I had no idea I was going to still be in a version of that guild almost 15 years later. Heck, I doubt I even realized that MMOs would still be a <em>thing</em> 15 years later! But from chatting with my fellow Massively staffers and you lovely readers, I've realized that my experience isn't shared by most people. Guilds implode. New games emerge. People move on. Drama develops. Real life happens. That sense of loyalty just isn't always worth the trouble. Guilds often exist to help members meet their goals in a single game, and when those goals are met, that's it -- it's over.<br />
<br />
But I'll move to (and stay in) games past their expiration dates just to hang out with guildies. What about you guys? Are you loyal to a single guild or group of gaming friends, or do you drop from a guild when you drop out of a game, knowing you'll find new mates in the next big thing?<br />

This week in Betawatch, the biggest news is that the game everyone <em>expected</em> to be in beta isn't around. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/arenanet-confirms-no-beta-for-this-weekend/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em> is not running a beta weekend this weekend</a>, meaning that anyone hoping to spend their long weekend in Tyria is going to have to go with the classic version. We also say farewell to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/aeria-launches-star-supremacy-browser-mmorts/"><em>Star Supremacy</em></a> in wake of its launch.<br />
<br />
However, for those who love testing unreleased games, it's not all bad news. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/world-of-warplanes-closed-beta-starts-may-31st/"><em>World of Warplanes</em></a> has announced its closed beta kicking off at the end of the month, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/mechwarrior-online-announces-closed-beta-and-founders-program/"><em>MechWarrior Online</em></a> is heading into its closed beta this week. While you won't have a chance to get your paws on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/raising-hell-in-the-secret-worlds-hell-raised-instance/"><em>The Secret World</em></a> just yet, we do have a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/raising-hell-in-the-secret-worlds-hell-raised-instance/">nice new shiny set of impressions from the beta</a> to help tide you over.<br />
<br />
Jump on past the break to see the full list of what's still in testing!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/betawatch-may-19-25-2012/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Betawatch: May 19 - 25, 2012</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/betawatch-may-19-25-2012/">Betawatch: May 19 - 25, 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 25 May 2012 20:00:00 EST. 	The future <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/rumor-38-studios-lays-off-entire-staff-sells-big-huge-games/">isn't looking particularly bright</a> for <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/38-studios">38 Studios</a> and its in-development MMO <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/project-copernicus">Project Copernicus</a></em>, but the game's writer, esteemed fantasy author <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/ra-salvatore">R.A. Salvatore</a>, took to the comments on a post on Daily Kos to tell everyone how great the game would have been.<br />
	<br />
	Salvatore claims that the game is "much further along than is being reported," and that he wishes he could show us some of it (though sadly, he cannot). He goes on to state that the developers behind <em>Copernicus</em> were "an amazing team of [developers]... pushing the envelope in their respective fields," and that "the environments, the animations, and the game-play would blow you away." The closure of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-Studios/">38 Studios</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Big-Huge-Games/">Big Huge Games</a> yesterday sparked a series of interesting events that make me both sad and proud to be a part of the greater gamer community. Job offers were overflowing from current game companies looking to snatch up some of 38's talented designers and a <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/search/%2338jobs">Twitter hash tag</a> was even created to spread the word and get new jobs for those affected by the layoffs. I am proud of the outreach and camaraderie of the game development community, but the hate being thrown at Curt Schilling isn't going to solve anything.<br />
<br />
The most important thing we can do at this point is to tape off the crime scene, look at the evidence, and figure out what went wrong.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/editorial-learning-from-the-38-studios-disaster/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Editorial: Learning from the 38 Studios disaster</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/editorial-learning-from-the-38-studios-disaster/">Editorial: Learning from the 38 Studios disaster</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 25 May 2012 13:00:00 EST. So what's all this hullabaloo about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world"><em>The Secret World</em></a>? Let's start with the basics.<br />
<br />
<em>The Secret World</em> is a new MMORPG by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom">Funcom</a>, the studio that brought you <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/age-of-conan"><em>Age of Conan</em></a>, and way back when, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/anarchy-online"><em>Anarchy Online</em></a>. It's also the brainchild of one <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ragnar-tornquist">Ragnar Tornquist</a>, familiar to adventure gamers the world over thanks to <em>Dreamfall</em> and <em>The Longest Journey</em>. Like those seminal titles, <em>The Secret World</em> seeks to conjure an immersive, fantastical realm of myth, magic, and in some cases, horror. Unlike the adventures of April Ryan, though, <em>The Secret World</em> is your story, and it takes place in the video game equivalent of the real world (not to mention Hell, portions of a hollow Earth, and many other mythological settings).<br />
<br />
There's an undeniable Lovecraftian influence, there are zombies and assault rifles, and there's a three-faction setup that asks players to join forces with noted secret societies like the Templars and the Illuminati (as well as the less-familiar Dragons). Did we mention battleground PvP, a <em>Minecraft</em>-inspired crafting system, and skill-based progression mechanics that depart from traditional MMORPG classes and levels in favor of player-made builds (drawn from a pool of nearly 600 distinct abilities)?<br />
<br />
As you can see, Funcom is throwing everything at the wall, and luckily for you, Massively has been keeping tabs on the game's development for a number of years now. We've also managed to spend quite a bit of time in the beta of late. Click past the cut for a roundup of our best coverage, including guides, impressions, interviews, and basically everything you want to know about <em>The Secret World</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-secret-world/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Everything you need to know about The Secret World</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-secret-world/">Everything you need to know about The Secret World</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 25 May 2012 11:30:00 EST. So <a href="http://www.planetside.com"><em>PlanetSide</em></a> is nine years old this week (nine!), and <a href="http://www.soe.com">Sony Online Entertainment</a> is journeying down memory lane to look back at its ground-breaking MMOFPS. The firm is of course hard at work on the sequel, but some of the devs have taken a time-out to share their favorite memories with us.<br />
<br />
Though the word "epic" is overused in MMO discourse, it's a recurring theme here. Due to the size, scope, and sheer ambition on display in the original <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planetside"><em>PlanetSide</em></a>, it's actually appropriate too. While you're reminiscing with the devs, take a stroll through our side-by-side gallery that compares vehicles and equipment from the original <em>PlanetSide</em> with their counterparts in <a href="http://www.planetside2.com"><em>PlanetSide 2</em></a>.<br />

Looking for another lore fix when it comes to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tera"><em>TERA</em></a>? <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/en-masse-entertainment">En Masse</a> has just released the game's fourth e-book tie-in named Death at Forgeheart. It's written by Kristine Kathryn Rusch and it tells the story of two detectives who manage to trust one another despite their racial differences as they team up to solve a murder with federation-altering implications.<br />
<br />
The official <em>TERA</em> website has an excerpt from the book, but the full text is available for purchase via Amazon, as are <em>TERA's</em> first three e-books: <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Fire-Ice-Short-Story-ebook/dp/B007P4XC3Q/">Fire and Ice</a>, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Killer-TERA-Short-Story-ebook/dp/B007MSM1M8">Killer</a>, and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-Amaranthine-Heart-Short-ebook/dp/B007JZ7IRC/">The Amaranthine Heart</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/en-masse-publishes-4th-tera-e-book-death-at-forgeheart/">En Masse publishes 4th TERA e-book, Death at Forgeheart</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 25 May 2012 10:00:00 EST. <br />
The Shadowforge Dwarves are the game's latest race, and players who choose to roll one will begin their adventures in the new Yrvandis Hollows starting area. In addition to the usual newbie zone accoutrements, the area features an instance called the Outskirts of Taffrock that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/frogster">Frogster</a> describes as "particularly challenging." Players will face off against a final boss known as Dark Gargoylem, along with his horde of aggressive spirits that have hunkered down in the lower levels of the ancient dwarven hall.<br />

During the first 10 minutes of my time with <a href="http://www.heroesandgenerals.com/2/index.html"><em>Heroes &amp; Generals</em></a>, I killed once, died twice, and drove a tank, a jeep, a half-track, and a bicycle (not necessarily in that order). I also rode shotgun on said tank and said jeep, manning a nifty vehicle-mounted machine gun in the process.<br />
<br />
I marveled at the visuals, took way too many screenshots of my squadmates looking at the blow-away badass in-game map (it's the little things, amirite?), and generally had a helluva good time. Did I mention that all of this happened in a browser?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/the-firing-line-hands-on-with-heroes-and-generals/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Firing Line: Hands-on with Heroes &amp; Generals</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/the-firing-line-hands-on-with-heroes-and-generals/">The Firing Line: Hands-on with Heroes &amp; Generals</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 25 May 2012 09:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DC Universe Online's</em></a> fourth DLC pack is on the way. As you're probably aware, it's called <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/last-laugh">Last Laugh</a>, but what you may not know is that it's focused on PvP. New iconic characters are making their way to the game's Legends mode, including DC stalwarts like Power Girl and Amon Sur.<br />
<br />
Up to this point, much of Legends PvP has focused on what creative director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jens-andersen">Jens Andersen</a> terms the Bat family. Characters like Batman, Bane, Two-Face, Robin, and the Joker are all mainstays. Now, though, players can step into the tights of both Kryptonian and Lantern heroes, and they can do so on the new Fortress of Solitude Legends map. That's not all, of course, but you'll need to head to Games Radar for more details plus a nifty video.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/dc-universe-online-expanding-legends-pvp-with-last-laugh-dlc/">DC Universe Online expanding Legends PvP with Last Laugh DLC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 24 May 2012 19:30:00 EST. For whatever reason, Rob Liefeld has become a mini-meme on my more meta columns of the week. He's a bad artist, yes, but as I've mentioned in the past, I don't actively dislike him. There are many people far more deserving of dislike. Case in point: <a href="http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Pat_Lee">Pat Lee</a>. I'm not going to explain in depth right here, but suffice to say that the man has history of hobbies like not paying his employees and taking credit for the work of others. <a href="http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Pat_Lee"><em>And</em> he's not a very good artist</a>.<br />
<br />
So let's move on from that meme, shall we? Great.<br />
<br />
Of course, if I'm talking about mini-memes on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Ask-Massively/">Ask Massively</a>, that must mean that it's time for this week's installment, yes? Yes. And this week, we're talking about the now almost ubiquitous case of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Kickstarter/">Kickstarter</a> project. If you've got a question you'd like to see answered in a future installment of Ask Massively, leave it in the comments below or mail it to <a href="mailto:ask@massively.com">ask@massively.com</a>. Questions may be edited slightly for clarity and/or brevity.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/ask-massively-artists-i-actually-dislike-edition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ask Massively: Artists I actually dislike edition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/ask-massively-artists-i-actually-dislike-edition/">Ask Massively: Artists I actually dislike edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 24 May 2012 19:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios">38 Studios</a> disaster continues to unfold today, as the troubled studio laid off its entire staff and <a href="http://kotaku.com/5913102/rumor-38-studios-shutting-down-big-huge-games">may be selling off</a> its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Big-Huge-Games/">Big Huge Games</a> division in Boston. <a href="http://www.myfoxboston.com/story/18612371/2012/05/24/report-38-studios-no-longer-paying-workers-could-close-by-weekend">Boston's Fox 25 News</a> speculates that the studio may close by this weekend.<br />
<br />
38 Studios CM <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/charles-dane">Charles Dane</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/cmdane/status/205761811981680642">confirmed being laid off</a> on Twitter: "Now on the market. I had an awesome run with 38 Studios, but this dream is now ending."<br />
<br />
Word is that the company is also selling its subsidiary, Big Huge Games. Big Huge Games is the maker of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Kingdoms-of-Amalur-Reckoning/"><em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</em></a>, 38 Studios' single-player prequel to its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Project-Copernicus/"><em>Copernicus</em></a> MMO. This would not be the first time that Big Huge Games was sold by its parent company, as the studio experienced the same event back in 2009.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.facebook.com/curt.schilling.56">Oh his Facebook page</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Curt-Schilling/">Curt Schilling</a> stressed that <em>Reckoning </em>did quite well in sales. "I wanted to clear up some misinformation around 38 Studios' first product, <em>Reckoning</em>. Sales of <em>Reckoning</em> outperformed <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ea">EA's</a> expectations and sold more than 1.2 million units in the game's first 90 days in the market."<br />
<br />
<strong>[Update]:</strong> Developer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ryan-shwayder">Ryan Shwayder</a> has also confirmed the layoffs via his <a href="http://www.nerfbat.com/2012/05/24/38-studios-what-a-journey/">personal blog</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/rumor-38-studios-lays-off-entire-staff-sells-big-huge-games/">38 Studios lays off entire staff, sells Big Huge Games [Updated]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 24 May 2012 17:00:00 EST. <em>Command &amp; Conquer</em> fans, today's a banner day. The latest entry in the long-running franchise is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/command-and-conquer-tiberium-alliances"><em>Tiberium Alliances</em></a>, a free-to-play browser-based title that's now available. It wasn't <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/08/aika-releases-dragons-epic-ii-saga-hestia-content/">too long ago</a> that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gpotato">gPotato</a> released <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/aika"><em>Aika's</em></a> Epic II Saga content patch. It's already time for Epic III, though, and the new chapter is sub-titled Descent. Why's that, we wondered? Well, because <em>Aika's</em> human warriors will "descend to the planet and take on the demons who forced them to flee their homes long ago," according to gPotato's latest PR drop.<br />
<br />
What does that mean in gameplay terms? Basically a level cap increase (to 85), a revamped Aitan Arena, and a new training ground area designed to push players to their limits. More details are available at the official <a href="http://aika.gpotato.com/epic3/">Epic III: Descent</a> website.<br />

It's that time of year again in Middle-earth, as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/turbine">Turbine</a> has blown the dust off <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online"><em>Lord of the Rings Online's</em></a> annual Spring Festival. With <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> in the offing, long-time <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> fans have an interesting dilemma on their hands. Trading up is probably a foregone conclusion in most cases, but abandoning <em>Guild Wars</em> altogether may sting a bit if you've invested a lot of time and energy into the original incarnation of Tyria.<br />
<br />
The same could be said for faithful <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest"><em>EverQuest</em></a> fans when <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> rolled around in 2004, and perhaps again whenever <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">Sony Online Entertainment</a> formalizes its <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a> project. For today's Daily Grind, then, we'd like to know how easily you could leave your current MMO if a sequel were to materialize. We know you'd check out the new shiny, but would you leave the older title for good?<br />

The latest <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pathfinder-online"><em>Pathfinder Online</em></a> dev blog is all about contracts. It's also about 20,000 pages long, so reading it starts to feel like reading a real contract after about the 10,000 page mark. OK, it's not all that bad. Heck it's actually pretty interesting stuff, since most MMOs these days go out of their way to segregate players from each other and from decisions that have lasting gameplay implications.<br />
<br />
Not so in <em>Pathfinder,</em> thanks to its contract mechanics, which <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ryan-dancey">Ryan Dancey</a> says are like "a questing system hidden in plain sight." While some of what you'll read in this particular blog is theoretical (and as such, it carries the standard subject-to-change disclaimers), the system as it stands right now is broken down into four in-game tools: escrow, reputation, alignment, and the law.<br />
<br />
Contracts themselves are sub-divided into assassination, auction, bounty, guard, loan, purchase, sale, and transportation flavors. It sounds somewhat complex, but there's definitely a method to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/goblinworks">Goblinworks</a>' madness. "Ideally, most of the commercial, diplomatic, and adventuring activities in the game will develop through player-to-player contracting," Dancey writes. "If somebody offers you a reward for bringing them 10 rat tails, it will be because another player needs 10 rat tails for some reason, not just because an NPC has an exclamation point bobbing over his head."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/new-pathfinder-dev-blog-talks-contract-questing-mechanics/">New Pathfinder dev blog talks contract, questing mechanics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 May 2012 21:00:00 EST. A game company's CEO should always promote the company's games and be enthusiastic. There is such a thing as too much enthusiasm, however. Case in point: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/StarVault/">StarVault</a> CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/HenrikNystrom/">Henrik Nystrom</a>'s <a href="http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/threads/a-chat-with-henrik.75371/">comments during an IRC chat with fans</a>. The chat was meant to cover the game's next major update, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Awakening/">Awakening</a></em>, but it included fan questions for future updates as well. It also included Nystrom telling a fan that he sees <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Mortal-Online/">Mortal Online</a></em> having roughly as many players as <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EVE-Online-/">EVE Online </a></em>in five years.<br />
<br />
By way of elaboration, <em>EVE Online</em> currently has roughly 450,000 players. <em>Mortal Online</em>'s subscription numbers have never been revealed, but estimates place it under 10,000 players.<br />
<br />
An impossible goal? Definitely not, but certainly one that might be a bit overly ambitious. Fans of the game can still <a href="http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/threads/a-chat-with-henrik.75371/">take a look at the chat</a> for other interesting tidbits, however, including plans to add drugs and improve the new player experience in the future.<br />
