The Daily Grind: What game needs (better) tutorials?

Super-hero, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, Opinion, Free-to-Play, The Daily Grind, Marvel Heroes

Let me state up front that I thoroughly enjoy Marvel Heroes. That said, I find some of its mechanics pretty obscure. Like, costume cores. What the heck am I supposed to do with those? To be fair, I could probably find the answer on the game's labyrinthine forum, but since I play it ultra-casually and somewhat infrequently, I'm usually too busy enjoying the clickfest to tab out and search.

TLDR, this game needs a tutorial or two, in my opinion.

What do you think, Massively readers? Is there an MMO or an MMO-lite in your rotation that needs some in-game explanation?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

The Stream Team: Making the most of Marvel Heroes Monday
It's Monday! Why celebrate? Because it's Marvel Heroes Monday, that's why. Of course, it's not as if Massively's MJ actually needs a reason to dive in and revel in the plethora of super powers, but it definitely makes Mondays better. This week the focus is on finishing up as much of the story line as possible on Storm because MJ knows as soon as Rogue is released, it's game over for all the other heroes in the line up! Can MJ power through the missions, or will she be distracted by all the shiny loot and XP from the latest Cosmic Chaos event? Join us live at 3:00 p.m. to see!

Perfect Ten: MMOs that deserve another chance

Dungeons and Dragons Online, EverQuest II, Opinion, Star Trek Online, RuneScape, Marvel Heroes, The Secret World, DC Universe Online, Star Wars: The Old Republic, RIFT, Perfect Ten, Miscellaneous, Neverwinter

First impressions matter. First impressions count. First impressions are lasting. These commonly cited maxims are true, but I would like to add one more: "First impressions can be deceiving." Due to our nature of making snap judgments, experiencing something at the wrong time or being impatient, we can rush to a conclusion that could rob us of something we could truly love.

There are few things that frustrate me more than seeing MMO gamers adopt the gospel of the first impressions and refuse to ever return to a game afterward. We keep treating MMOs as disposable, one-shot entertainment that must be plundered quickly right out of the gate instead of seeing them as reusable fun that gets better with time.

So the next time you feel bored waiting for the next MMO to launch so that you can make a two-month first impression and then leave forever, why not give an older title a second try? In this week's countdown, I'm going to make a case for 10 MMOs that deserve another chance even if you wrote them off long ago.

The Daily Grind: Have you branched out beyond traditional MMOs lately?

Culture, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, Opinion, The Daily Grind, Marvel Heroes

As I mentioned in this space last week, I've been suffering a bit of MMO burnout. I've still been gaming, though, mostly via single-player stuff but also a smidge of Marvel Heroes. I was never much for Diablo, which is why my ongoing MH fixation is somewhat surprising. Maybe I'm just an action RPG late-bloomer, and I'm curious to see if I might enjoy something like Path of Exile now, too.

What about you, Massively readers? Have you branched out beyond traditional MMOs recently? How so?

PAX Prime 2014: Marvel Heroes is the industry's surprise success story

Meeting with Marvel Heroes' David Brevik at PAX Prime confirmed what I have been observing over the past year or so: This game has quietly and steadily become one of the bigger success stories in the online gaming industry. Brevik told me that the Marvel Heroes playerbase continues to grow, boasting four times as many players as it had nine months ago.

What did Brevik attribute to the game's meteoric rise? The promotions and sheer mountain of new content that the team's been adding certainly helped, but he said that it really came down to terrific community relations. Brevik streams the game four nights a week and talks to the community members as though they were part of his family.

Get a glimpse of Rogue in Marvel Heroes' video preview
Few are the superhero fans who don't like Rogue, the saucy southern villain-turned-hero, and Marvel Heroes will soon be adding this powerful X-Man to its lineup. With her unique power-absorbing abilities, how will Rogue work in the game? Devs hosted a lengthy livestream to introduce the hero and show off her versatility. Of Rogue's three power sets, only one is pre-defined -- the Miss Marvel set with flight, strength, etc. The other two are customizable based on the powers players actually steal from friends!

If you missed the stream, you can get full details on stealing powers (as well as forgetting them to learn others), in the hour-and-twenty-minute video right here. There's also some talk about Jean Grey and Ghostrider, who get a Dark Phoenix power and more single-target attacks, respectively. Fans can also discuss Rogue in her special forums on the official site. Rogue is available currently for pre-order.

Bad things to unleash include krakens, tempers, and the hounds. Good things to unleash include puppy parades and Marvel Heroes' new Cosmic Chaos Week.

This soon-to-be monthly event features a week full of double boss loot drops, double prestige earned, and cosmic doops as far as the eye can see. There will also be opportunities to save up for special rewards and to buy certain galactic-themed heroes for a discounted price.

The event is currently live and will go until the patch next week.

The Stream Team: More heroes in Marvel Heroes
Massively's MJ is of the opinion you can never play a super hero too often, so she's donning her cape and flying right back into more Marvel Heroes adventures. Only now there are even more heroes to choose from! That means some decisional paralysis might come into play. Which will she select? Will it be her long-time favorite Storm? What about Nightcrawler or Psylocke? Maybe she'll pull out an even newer hero to showcase! Regardless, it will be a mighty adventure of smashing bad guys -- along with nearby trashcans, cars, and hot dog carts. Join us live at 2:00 p.m. EDT for some super fun.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy film hits theaters on August 1st, and Marvel Heroes is counting down with its 10 Days of Guardians of the Galaxy in-game event. There's also a daily login reward, so head to the official Marvel Heroes website to read all about it!

Marvel Heroes introduces Mr. Fantastic and a boost weekend

Super-hero, Events (In-Game), News Items, Free-to-Play, Marvel Heroes

Because what could be more awesome than stretching, I guess? Reed Richards is kind of a jerk.
He's the leader of the first super team in the Marvel Universe, he's a brilliant scientist, and he has perhaps the most egotistical name in the entire franchise. He's Mr. Fantastic, and he's now available in Marvel Heroes for players to enjoy. Launching with two costumes, Richards has access to all of his usual tricks, including forming giant fists, stretching to insane lengths as a travel method, and presumably blasting his friends and family members with untested inventions just to see what happens.

If you can't wait to get your (normal human-sized) hands on the FF's leader, you'll be well served by the bonus event running this weekend. All players will receive a 100% bonus to experience, SIF, and RIF gained during the weekend. Players will also have access to A.R.M.O.R. Research Drives, which can be turned in to Jocasta for A.R.M.O.R. Bounty Boxes as well as rewards from the previous bounty event. No better time to get stretching, in other words.

Marvel Heroes has great plans for you this Fourth of July weekend

Super-hero, Events (In-Game), Free-to-Play, Marvel Heroes

marvel heroes
Do you have a few days off this weekend for superhero action? Marvel Heroes has a trio of events lined up for players this weekend who have an abundance of time on their hands.

The main event this weekend is a "Red, White, and Loot" boost to rotating game modes. Marvel Heroes will increase loot drops between four game modes depending on the time of day. There will also be BBQ-themed drops all over the game (because HULK LOVE HOT DOG!) and an extended Soccer Showdown event that neatly coincides with the World Cup.
