Leaderboard: Which additional ArcheAge race would you like to play?

Fantasy, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, New Titles, Opinion, Races, ArcheAge, Sandbox, Leaderboard

ArcheAge is launching with four playable races. This seems like a small number for a fantasy MMO, but XLGAMES has hinted at additional choices before, namely the Dwarf, the Warborn, the Fairy, and the Returned. We've seen some visual evidence of those first two, but the Fairy and the Returned are still somewhat mysterious.

Do any of those additional races sound appealing to you, ArcheAge fans? Which one, if any, would you choose to play if they were available?

Leaderboard: Are you rolling east or west for your ArcheAge faction?

Fantasy, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, New Titles, Opinion, ArcheAge, Sandbox, Leaderboard

I may have mentioned this once or twice already, but ArcheAge is fast approaching. I'm pretty excited about that, but I haven't settled on a faction yet. See, I kinda like both the Firran and Harani races which live on the game's eastern continent, but I much prefer the Nuian human lands from the western continent that I explored during the game's Korean closed betas.

What about you, ArcheAge players? Are you rolling east or west on your launch-day main? How did you choose?

Leaderboard: How do you feel about loyalty rewards?

Fantasy, MMO Industry, Opinion, Leaderboard, The Elder Scrolls Online

Elder Scrolls Online announced its vet reward program recently, and while it doesn't take effect until next month, it got me to thinking about similar incentives in other MMOs. They're pretty common, of course, and even F2P games offer them provided that they also offer an optional subscription tier.

Personally vet rewards aren't much of an incentive. I mean, sometimes they offer a neat-looking vanity pet that I'll look at once and subsequently forget to ever summon again, but I can't recall ever anticipating a loyalty reward or remaining subscribed in order to get one. What about you, Massively readers? Are loyalty rewards nothing more than a nice bonus, or are there some that go above and beyond in terms of desirability? If so, which ones? Don't forget to vote after the cut!

Leaderboard: What's your post-release plan for ArcheAge?

Fantasy, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, New Titles, Opinion, ArcheAge, Sandbox, Leaderboard

ArcheAge is coming soon, possibly as soon as next month if you believe a certain Steam-centric rumor. Whenever XLGAMES' long-gestating sandpark arrives, there will be plenty of things to keep you busy throughout its vast fantasy world.

Whether you're into trade routes, farming, crafting, traditional PvE, or open PvP, AA has you covered. With that in mind, what do you see as your primary in-game activity post-release? Vote after the cut!

Leaderboard: What the heck is Guild Wars 2's Pale Tree?

Fantasy, Polls, Lore, Guild Wars 2, Races, Leaderboard, Buy-to-Play

I've heard of Mad King Thorn, but this is ridiculous.
Since Guild Wars 2's humble beginnings, players have been debating the exact nature of the seemingly benevolent Pale Tree, an entity who has acted as a mother to the playable Sylvari race. Season two of the living world story has been throwing more fuel on this particular fire with almost every chapter, and this week's release of The Dragon's Reach: Part Two is no exception.

Since ArenaNet has announced a mid-season break in the story, it seems like a good time to cast our votes once and for all and ensure bragging rights for those of us who turn out to be correct. What's your favorite explanation for the existence of the Pale Tree? Click past the break to vote (but be warned that while this poll is spoiler-free, the comments may not be)!

Leaderboard: Firefall vs. Defiance vs. Destiny

Sci-Fi, MMO Industry, New Titles, PvP, PvE, Opinion, Free-to-Play, Leaderboard, Defiance, Firefall, Destiny, Buy-to-Play

Shooters are certainly in vogue at the moment, what with last week's Firefall launch, this week's Defiance Silicon Valley expansion launch, and next month's colossally expensive Destiny launch. Come to think of it, those three titles are probably worth pitting against one another, wouldn't you agree?

So, how about it Massively shooter fans? If you had to pick one of those three titles as your go-to gunplay fix, which would it be? Vote after the cut!

Leaderboard: Which dead MMO is your favorite?

Culture, MMO Industry, Opinion, Leaderboard

Since Vanguard is closing down this week, I'm in sort of a morbid mood.

Sorry.

Anyhow, today's Leaderboard poll will tread some unfamiliar territory when it comes to pitting MMOs against one another, mainly because all of these MMOs are dead. Vote for your favorite past the cut!

Leaderboard: How much time do you spend customizing avatar outfits?

Sci-Fi, Culture, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, Opinion, Free-to-Play, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Leaderboard

OK, I'm spending entirely too much time customizing my avatar outfits in Star Wars: The Old Republic. I originally re-upped my sub in order to polish off my last couple of class stories, but now I've gotten sucked into crafting and, by extension, the substantial outfit collection minigame. Which is bizarre because in meatspace my fashion sense boils down to the first pair of jeans and corresponding t-shirt/sweatshirt that tumbles out of my closet.

Leaderboard: Which ArcheAge race will you pick for your main?

Fantasy, MMO Industry, New Titles, Opinion, Free-to-Play, Races, ArcheAge, Sandbox, Leaderboard

I am so damn excited for ArcheAge! And with closed beta starting this week, it seems like an opportune time to translate that excitement into a Leaderboard poll. I'd like to ask which class(es) you plan to play, but that might prove a bit cumbersome since there are over 100 choices. Instead, let's talk about the game's four races. Which one will you roll as your main?

The world's smallest violin, playing just for the waitresses
Holy cow, folks, I have a problem! Admittedly it's a first-world problem, but it's a problem nonetheless. See, I have limited time. And there are just too many interesting games either out right now or coming out later this year or releasing meaty updates in the near future, etc.

Even if I retired tomorrow, I wouldn't have time to scarf up all of this awesome gaming goodness. Maybe you can feel my pain in this regard and maybe you can't. Regardless, you can click past the cut and boss me around narrow my focus for the remainder of 2014. Care to help a brother out?

Leaderboard: Will you be trying ArcheAge?

Betas, Fantasy, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, New Titles, PvP, Opinion, ArcheAge, Sandbox, Leaderboard

ArcheAge's closed beta is coming in a couple of weeks, and if Trion stays on schedule, the long-awaited sandpark's western launch will happen some time prior to year's end. The only real question, then, is will you be playing.

There's clearly a lot to like about the game in terms of features, but there's also the specter of open PvP, which has traditionally hamstrung MMO sales and retention figures in the West. So, how about it, Massively readers? Will you be trying ArcheAge despite (or perhaps because of) its PvP?

Leaderboard: How much time do you spend getting good at a game?

Sci-Fi, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, PvP, Opinion, Sandbox, Leaderboard, Star Citizen, Buy-to-Play

Yesterday's Chris Roberts post on Star Citizen's flight model got me to thinking about game systems, learning, and the lengths we'll go to to be good at a particular title.

It's too early to know for sure, of course, but it seems like Star Citizen might be one of those sim-before-game exercises that requires both a lot of practice time and a lot of study in terms of knowing both your ship capabilities and those of your opponent's ship.

What about your current MMOs, though? How much time do you spend getting good at your favorite in-game activities? Vote after the cut!

Leaderboard: Should MMOs include player-run servers?

Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, Opinion, Miscellaneous, Leaderboard

Shards Online
This week's Massively Speaking briefly touched on the trend of player-run MMO servers. Games including H1Z1, Star Citizen, and Shards Online are toying with the concept, and while it's yet to take off in a big way, it could play into the future of the genre.

What say you, Leaderboard readers? Is there room in your definition of MMO for player-run servers, or does a game/shard need to be dev-run to qualify?

Now that WildStar and The Elder Scrolls Online have well and truly launched, it's time to readjust our priorities when it comes to anticipating MMOs. Leaderboard: Will you PvP in WildStar?

Fantasy, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, New Titles, PvP, Opinion, WildStar, Leaderboard, Subscription

WildStar
WildStar's latest trailer is one of those our-game-has-everything teasers, and so of course there's a bit about PvP buried in there somewhere. I'm warming to the game, and I'm also considering PvP more than I usually do in MMOs, since the clip claims that you can level up that way as opposed to the usual themepark quest grind.

What about you, Leaderboard readers? Assuming you're playing WildStar, will you be PvPing at all?
