Shroud of the Avatar
Shroud of the Avatar is bearing down on its one-year anniversary since the title was successfully funded on Kickstarter, and Portalarium has several giveaways and events planned for the occasion.

The events planned include several hour-long developer hangouts, an all-day hangout telethon on April 7th, and access to Release 4 for backers on the 7th as well. The studio will be giving away an Alienware gaming laptop, a trip to Austin to visit with the team, Founder adventure pledges, and weekend passes for Release 5.

Portalarium also announced that it's creating a fourth housing lot size to fit castles for Lords of the Manor. It's a four-fold increase in size over city lots and even comes with a moat -- because why have player housing if you're not able to drown your visiting friends?

MJ will be streaming ESO from this beta test on Friday at 2:00 p.m. EST, so if you can't get in the game, definitely give her adventures a watch!

Pledge your allegiance to Guild Wars 2 in new video contest

Fantasy, Contests, Guild Wars 2, Giveaways, Buy-to-Play

Guild Wars 2
ArenaNet is serious about getting new players to its subscription-free MMO, Guild Wars 2. Serious enough that they want players to be just as serious by reciting an oath to the popular fantasy game.

In the new Great MMO Migration contest, interested new players have a chance to win one of 5,000 new copies of the game by entering a video contest pledging their allegiance to Guild Wars 2. The 30-second clip must be recorded in a public place while the player recites the Guild Wars 2 oath:

I, [name], renounce [adjective] games and pledge my allegiance to Guild Wars 2.
I likewise declare my freedom from [noun] subscription fees!
That I turn my back forever on [noun] which is/are totally [adjective].
That I will take up arms to defend the [noun] and crush evil with my [noun].
I take this oath to Guild Wars 2 freely, without [noun] because I am [noun].

If you're interested in pledging your allegiance to Guild Wars 2, you have from now until Tuesday, December 3 at 11:59 p.m. PST to submit your video. Be sure to check out the official site for complete rules and a video after the cut that is... a bit... well, you just have to watch it to see.

EVE Evolved: Should CCP interfere in the sandbox?

Sci-Fi, EVE Online, Culture, Events (In-Game), MMO Industry, Opinion, EVE Evolved, Giveaways, Promotions, Dev Diaries, Sandbox, Player-Generated Content, Subscription

Game title image
When it comes to player outrage, EVE Online seems to make the headlines more than any other MMO. The game has endured several high-profile scandals in its 10-year history, from the T20 developer corruption incident in 2007 to 2011's famous Monoclegate scandal. As EVE is a true sandbox game with a focus on PvP and player competition, developers have historically limited their direct influence on the universe. The importance of limiting interference became abundantly clear during the T20 incident when it was discovered that a developer had given tech 2 blueprints and preferential treatment to the Band of Brothers alliance.

This interference in the sandbox had a profound and lasting impact on EVE's political endgame and undermined the legitimate accomplishments of other alliances. Some of the same issues that were raised in the wake of that scandal have now resurfaced amidst controversy over CCP's community team and its involvement with third-party fansites. Gambling website SOMER Blink was selected to host a huge giveaway event with rare prizes provided by CCP, and the contest organisers were then given rare battleships worth billions of ISK to keep as thank-you presents.

In this week's EVE Evolved, I run down the details of the latest EVE Online controversy and ask whether CCP should directly interfere in the sandbox at all.

Not So Massively Elite dev diary, Garen revamp, and SMITE adds Mercury
David Braben talked us through the impressive Elite: Dangerous trailer and showed how putting the trailer together has helped development considerably. Star Citizen showed concept art for its in-station MobiGlas user interface, and the game's crowdfunding total is about to cross the $21m mark.

Blizzard responded to reports of item duplication and hacking on the console versions of Diablo III and admitted that it is working on a way to let players move from one act to another via the waypoint system. And Path of Exile announced that it will officially launch on October 23rd in a large update that includes a new Steam release.

Competitive League of Legends team SK Telecom 1 battled its way to the million-dollar top prize at this year's League of Legends World Championship, and the tournament's end signals the release of Patch 3.12. Third-person MOBA SMITE added new speed-based assassin character Mercury, Messenger of The Gods, to its growing pantheon. And Russian MOBA Prime World officially launched on Steam this week and released a spotlight on its new blood-drinking characters Vampire and Dahaka.

Experience TERA with a free highlevel character
Last March, En Masse enticed new players to join and get to high levels in TERA with a power-level promotion. But for some, even prizes couldn't make that much grinding worth it. If you fall in that crowd, then TERA's newest promotion is for you: For a limited time, new and existing accounts can get a free level 58 character! This Level Up Test Event is a chance for current players to get friends into the game and group up with them immediately as well as for new players who've been debating trying it to experience the newest content.

To get your free level 58 character, you must create a brand-new character between 1:00 p.m. September 19th and 2:59 a.m. September 23rd and give it a name ending in ".Levelup" (i.e. Bob.Levelup, Jane.Levelup). All newly minted level 58 characters will be supplied with gear, a mount, access to all story quests, and a name change voucher. For full details, visit the official site.
