<a href="http://www.soe.com">Sony Online Entertainment</a> has begun carpet-bombing media outlets with publicity relating to its upcoming <a href="http://www.planetside2.com"><em>PlanetSide 2</em></a> MMOFPS. The game has been in development for quite a while now, but up until very recently the devs have kept a low profile. Now the title's Twitter feed is exploding on a daily basis, awe-inspiring <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/take-to-the-skies-with-planetside-2s-aerial-combat-trailer/">alpha gameplay videos</a> are finding their way into the public eye, and interviews abound.<br />

I managed to get creative director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/matt-higby">Matt Higby's</a> attention for a few moments, and he's got some interesting things to say about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planetside-2"><em>PS2's</em></a> upside. The few. The proud. The quest writers.<br />

At the best of times, the fruits of their labors guide us along in our progression of a local or global story, immersing us in the world. Even the nefarious "kill 10 rats" versions can be mini stories that pull players in when done well. But how many of us have ever had a "I could do better than that" moment or have simply wanted to live out a personal story or share in a customized grand adventure with our friends? Someone wished upon the right star because with features like the Mission Architect in <a href="http://na.cityofheroes.com/en/"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> you can do just that.<br />
<br />
I am just going to come right out and say it -- the quest builder is one of the greatest boons ever for player-generated content in MMORPGs. Besides housing, it is the feature du jour for the creative crowd; I honestly can't see how any game can actually go without one. During this latest round of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/choose-my-adventure/">Choose My Adventure</a>, I had the opportunity to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/choose-my-adventure-the-last-mile/">check out</a> the system in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-heroes"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> and revel in the creativity of others as well as try my hand at developing missions. And I tell you, it is addicting.<br />

I've had my fill of MMORTS games. I love them, and I mean <em>love</em> them, but after being asked to look at the 567,386th title from the genre, I am getting a wicked case of tunnel vision. Sometimes I wish I could hit a switch and see these games with the eyes of a brand-new player, to truly judge their quality without any preconceptions. That's not possible, unfortunately.<br />
<br />
Luckily, once in a while there comes along a title that feels fresh or does enough with design to seem new and clever. <a href="https://alliances.commandandconquer.com/?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=alliances.commandandconquer.com&amp;utm_campaign=p4f-common-nav"><em>Command and Conquer Tiberium Alliances</em></a> stands out from the crowd with its interesting combat and a casual approach to hardcore gaming. So <a href="http://www.planetside.com"><em>PlanetSide</em></a> is nine years old this week (nine!), and <a href="http://www.soe.com">Sony Online Entertainment</a> is journeying down memory lane to look back at its ground-breaking MMOFPS. The firm is of course hard at work on the sequel, but some of the devs have taken a time-out to share their favorite memories with us.<br />

<br />
The Shadowforge Dwarves are the game's latest race, and players who choose to roll one will begin their adventures in the new Yrvandis Hollows starting area. In addition to the usual newbie zone accoutrements, the area features an instance called the Outskirts of Taffrock that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/frogster">Frogster</a> describes as "particularly challenging." Players will face off against a final boss known as Dark Gargoylem, along with his horde of aggressive spirits that have hunkered down in the lower levels of the ancient dwarven hall.<br />

<em>Runes of Magic</em> is a free-to-play fantasy title developed by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/runewaker">Runewaker</a> and published by Frogster. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/fires-of-shadowforge">Fires of Shadowforge</a> update releases June 12th.<br />

During the first 10 minutes of my time with <a href="http://www.heroesandgenerals.com/2/index.html"><em>Heroes &amp; Generals</em></a>, I killed once, died twice, and drove a tank, a jeep, a half-track, and a bicycle (not necessarily in that order). I also rode shotgun on said tank and said jeep, manning a nifty vehicle-mounted machine gun in the process.<br />
<br />
I marveled at the visuals, took way too many screenshots of my squadmates looking at the blow-away badass in-game map (it's the little things, amirite?), and generally had a helluva good time. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/archeage">ArcheAge's</a></em> CBT4 ended a couple months ago and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/xl-games">XLGAMES</a> has been busy putting the information gathered to use. To showcase changes and improvements made during the break between CBT4 and CBT5, a series of videos is planned. The first video in this series highlights the transformation of one starting area, Rainbow Fields; once described as empty and flat, this region is now populated with more buildings, has a more diverse landscape, and sports improved weather effects.<br />
<br />
Although there is still no official word on <em>ArcheAge</em> being released to the western market, sandbox hopefuls can check out the latest improvements after the break.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DC Universe Online's</em></a> fourth DLC pack is on the way. As you're probably aware, it's called <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/last-laugh">Last Laugh</a>, but what you may not know is that it's focused on PvP. New iconic characters are making their way to the game's Legends mode, including DC stalwarts like Power Girl and Amon Sur.<br />

Up to this point, much of Legends PvP has focused on what creative director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jens-andersen">Jens Andersen</a> terms the Bat family. Characters like Batman, Bane, Two-Face, Robin, and the Joker are all mainstays. Now, though, players can step into the tights of both Kryptonian and Lantern heroes, and they can do so on the new Fortress of Solitude Legends map. It wasn't <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/08/aika-releases-dragons-epic-ii-saga-hestia-content/">too long ago</a> that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gpotato">gPotato</a> released <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/aika"><em>Aika's</em></a> Epic II Saga content patch. It's already time for Epic III, though, and the new chapter is sub-titled Descent. Why's that, we wondered? Well, because <em>Aika's</em> human warriors will "descend to the planet and take on the demons who forced them to flee their homes long ago," according to gPotato's latest PR drop.<br />
<br />
What does that mean in gameplay terms? Basically a level cap increase (to 85), a revamped Aitan Arena, and a new training ground area designed to push players to their limits. More details are available at the official <a href="http://aika.gpotato.com/epic3/">Epic III: Descent</a> website.<br />

It's that time of year again in Middle-earth, as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/turbine">Turbine</a> has blown the dust off <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online"><em>Lord of the Rings Online's</em></a> annual Spring Festival. A Casual Stroll to Mordor opines that this year's edition won't depart too much from years past, so you can expect to find the usual hedge maze, horse-racing, and Inn League shenanigans out in full force.<br />

The latest <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pathfinder-online"><em>Pathfinder Online</em></a> dev blog is all about contracts. It's also about 20,000 pages long, so reading it starts to feel like reading a real contract after about the 10,000 page mark. OK, it's not all that bad. Heck it's actually pretty interesting stuff, since most MMOs these days go out of their way to segregate players from each other and from decisions that have lasting gameplay implications.<br />
<br />
Not so in <em>Pathfinder,</em> thanks to its contract mechanics, which <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ryan-dancey">Ryan Dancey</a> says are like "a questing system hidden in plain sight." While some of what you'll read in this particular blog is theoretical (and as such, it carries the standard subject-to-change disclaimers), the system as it stands right now is broken down into four in-game tools: escrow, reputation, alignment, and the law.<br />
<br />
Contracts themselves are sub-divided into assassination, auction, bounty, guard, loan, purchase, sale, and transportation flavors. It sounds somewhat complex, but there's definitely a method to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/goblinworks">Goblinworks</a>' madness. "Ideally, most of the commercial, diplomatic, and adventuring activities in the game will develop through player-to-player contracting," Dancey writes. A game company's CEO should always promote the company's games and be enthusiastic. There is such a thing as too much enthusiasm, however. Case in point: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/StarVault/">StarVault</a> CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/HenrikNystrom/">Henrik Nystrom</a>'s <a href="http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/threads/a-chat-with-henrik.75371/">comments during an IRC chat with fans</a>. The chat was meant to cover the game's next major update, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Awakening/">Awakening</a></em>, but it included fan questions for future updates as well. It also included Nystrom telling a fan that he sees <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Mortal-Online/">Mortal Online</a></em> having roughly as many players as <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EVE-Online-/">EVE Online </a></em>in five years.<br />
<br />
By way of elaboration, <em>EVE Online</em> currently has roughly 450,000 players. <em>Mortal Online</em>'s subscription numbers have never been revealed, but estimates place it under 10,000 players.<br />
<br />
An impossible goal? Definitely not, but certainly one that might be a bit overly ambitious. Fans of the game can still <a href="http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/threads/a-chat-with-henrik.75371/">take a look at the chat</a> for other interesting tidbits, however, including plans to add drugs and improve the new player experience in the future.<br />

<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/The-Elder-Scrolls-Online/">The Elder Scrolls Online</a></em> has certain player expectations going in, such as an expectation of the sort of quest structure you usually find in the series. More specifically, it's the sort of structure in which you start off on some simple quest and wind up wandering off into some completely unrelated point of interest. <a href="http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2012/05/23/exploring-quests-in-the-elder-scrolls-online.aspx">A recent interview</a> with creative director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Paul-Sage/">Paul Sage</a> and lead content designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Rich-Lambert/">Rich Lambert</a> reveals that the team is aiming for just that sort of model in the game.<br />

As Lambert explains, the team wants to move away from the usual hub design in favor of several points of interest, each of which provides a little snippet of content and story. <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> is a rarity. It's a well-established game that hasn't yet raised the level cap even once. Oh, sure, the Incarnate system is cheating a couple of extra level-like improvements out, but you hit the cap at 50 now just like you did when the game first launched. Compared to <em><a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com">World of Warcraft</a>,</em> which ups its top level biannually, the game provides a real sense of security that the cap hasn't changed. Level 50 content is still relevant because the top end of power has remained stable.<br />
<br />
Of course, there's a downside to that as well. While having a forever-rising level cap has its own issues, a firm cap has left us with an endgame that's grown bloated as only games with entrenched caps can. Remember <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/argo-online/"><em>ARGO Online</em></a>, the free-to-play steampunk fantasy MMO that launched in early 2011? If not, now's as good a time as any to refresh your memory since the game is about to undergo the largest content update in its history.<br />

First up is a max-level increase (to 55), followed by a new "expert" island called Naviruo, which is geared toward level 50-plus players. Here you'll find more than 400 new quests that continue the tale of conflict between the Floresslah and Nobilan factions. There are also seven new dungeons to satiate your PvE and PvP appetites, not to mention over 300 new types of monsters to make things a little more challenging.<br />

If you're looking for a free-to-play browser-based MMORTS title, there are plenty of them out there. The latest such comes courtesy of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/aeria-games">Aeria Games</a>. The company is launching <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/star-supremacy"><em>Star Supremacy</em></a>, a sci-fi RTS title featuring 2-D graphics in both space and planetary environments.<br />

<span>Players can choose from three different factions (the Altairians, the Seekers, and the UEO) and then set about gathering resources and building fleets before heading into combat. Two new game modes are coming to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-tanks"><em>World of Tanks</em></a>. Encounter battle and assault will both debut with the 7.4 patch, as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wargaming.net">Wargaming.net</a> looks to up the ante in terms of complicated combat assignments.<br />
<br />
The patch will also expand the French tank tree as well as add two new maps to the mix. The first map is called Widepark, and it takes place amidst the ruins of a bombed out German town. The second map is called Airfield. It transports players to a Mediterranean location surrounded by temple ruins and rocky hills.<br />
<br />
The most noteworthy 7.4 changes, though, are the game modes. Encounter battle "invites two sides to fight for one base," according to a Wargaming.net press release. Assault "sets the players in the roles of attackers and defenders where the former have superior combat capabilities," the company says.<br />

Want to get your Vanarch's mug on the front page of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tera"><em>TERA</em></a> website? Now you can, thanks to a new campaign poster contest sponsored by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/en-masse-entertainment">En Masse Entertainment</a>. What the heck is a Vanarch? It's the player politician who oversees various provinces in the world of Arborea. Vanarchs can open shops, enable or disable open PvP, raise taxes, and basically affect the game world (and other players) in ways that are off-limits in your average themepark MMO.<br />

The contest rules are pretty simple. You'll need to include your campaign poster, along with a short paragraph extolling the virtues of your candidate, in an email to En Masse. You'll want to be quick about it too, as the submission period ends tomorrow.<br />
