The Daily Grind: Do you like beefcake avatars?

Super-hero, Classes, Culture, MMO Industry, Opinion, The Daily Grind, Marvel Heroes

Marvel Heroes' new Juggernaut character sounded intriguing. Then I got a look at him and he went from probable purchase to lol-no-way!

Despite the intriguing momentum mechanic and the appeal of smashing everything in sight, I really can't stand beefcake character models. It's not just an MMO thing either. I find Gears of War unintentionally funny due to how absurd its cast looks, and Batvillain Bane is one of the silliest comic book baddies I've ever seen.

What about you, Massively readers? Do you like beefcake avatars, or do you laugh and steer clear like I do?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

Juggernaut is Marvel Heroes' 40th playable character

Super-hero, Classes, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, News Items, PvE, Marvel Heroes, OARPG

Marvel Heroes' 40th(!) playable character is Juggernaut, which Gazillion says will give gamers a chance to feel the power of the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak while using Cain Marko -- aka, Professor Xavier's stepbrother -- to smash everything in sight.

The new baddie's powers aren't limited by a resource, according to Gazillion designer and community manager Ryan Collins. "We wanted you to feel unstoppable and I believe that we've captured that essence with his powers, visual effects, movement speed, and even running animations changing as you build Momentum," Collins says.

Marvel Heroes adds Nova to its roster

Super-hero, Trailers, Video, Classes, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, News Items, Marvel Heroes

Marvel Heroes has a new superpowered crimefighter in its lineup. Nova is the latest addition to Gazillion's free-to-play online action RPG, and players can choose to play him in his Richard Rider/Nova Prime costume or in his new Nova/Sam Alexander duds.

Mechanically, Nova is something of a hybrid who is able to use both ranged and melee powers to "defeat enemies quickly." You can see him in action via the trailer just past the break.

Leaderboard: Which Marvel Heroes character should I play?

Super-hero, Classes, MMO Industry, Marvel Heroes, Leaderboard

I'm going to borrow a bit from Massively's Choose My Adventure series in today's Leaderboard. My Marvel Heroes dabbling continues, but I'm having some decisional paralysis regarding my next hero. That's where you -- and today's poll -- come in.

I'm going to restrict the choices to X-men (excepting Storm and Nightcrawler) because, well, I like X-men and it also keeps the poll manageable. Help me out after the cut, please and thank you in advance!

Ever wish that you could put to rest a long-standing MMO debate once and for all? Then welcome to the battle royal of Massively's Leaderboard, where two sides enter the pit o' judgment -- and only one leaves. Vote to make your opinion known, and see whether your choice tops the Leaderboard!

The Stream Team: Making the most of Rogue on Marvel Heroes Monday
Marvel Heroes Monday is back! Massively's MJ is diving back into the game that glorifies in alt-itis like no other. With so many heroes to choose from -- and more added regularly -- it's understandable that anyone could be paralyzed by indecision, so just imagine how difficult it is for MJ to pick one to play. Luckily, the inclusion of Rogue on the roster makes at least that one choice in her life a bit easier; selecting Rogue is like playing a handful of her favorite heroes all at once! Join us live at 3:00 p.m. for more super adventures on the best southern belle around.

The Daily Grind: What game needs (better) tutorials?

Super-hero, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, Opinion, Free-to-Play, The Daily Grind, Marvel Heroes

Let me state up front that I thoroughly enjoy Marvel Heroes. That said, I find some of its mechanics pretty obscure. Like, costume cores. What the heck am I supposed to do with those? To be fair, I could probably find the answer on the game's labyrinthine forum, but since I play it ultra-casually and somewhat infrequently, I'm usually too busy enjoying the clickfest to tab out and search.

TLDR, this game needs a tutorial or two, in my opinion.

What do you think, Massively readers? Is there an MMO or an MMO-lite in your rotation that needs some in-game explanation?

The Stream Team: Making the most of Marvel Heroes Monday
It's Monday! Why celebrate? Because it's Marvel Heroes Monday, that's why. Of course, it's not as if Massively's MJ actually needs a reason to dive in and revel in the plethora of super powers, but it definitely makes Mondays better. This week the focus is on finishing up as much of the story line as possible on Storm because MJ knows as soon as Rogue is released, it's game over for all the other heroes in the line up! Can MJ power through the missions, or will she be distracted by all the shiny loot and XP from the latest Cosmic Chaos event? Join us live at 3:00 p.m. to see!

Perfect Ten: MMOs that deserve another chance

Dungeons and Dragons Online, EverQuest II, Opinion, Star Trek Online, RuneScape, Marvel Heroes, The Secret World, DC Universe Online, Star Wars: The Old Republic, RIFT, Perfect Ten, Miscellaneous, Neverwinter

ddo
First impressions matter. First impressions count. First impressions are lasting. These commonly cited maxims are true, but I would like to add one more: "First impressions can be deceiving." Due to our nature of making snap judgments, experiencing something at the wrong time or being impatient, we can rush to a conclusion that could rob us of something we could truly love.

There are few things that frustrate me more than seeing MMO gamers adopt the gospel of the first impressions and refuse to ever return to a game afterward. We keep treating MMOs as disposable, one-shot entertainment that must be plundered quickly right out of the gate instead of seeing them as reusable fun that gets better with time.

So the next time you feel bored waiting for the next MMO to launch so that you can make a two-month first impression and then leave forever, why not give an older title a second try? In this week's countdown, I'm going to make a case for 10 MMOs that deserve another chance even if you wrote them off long ago.

The Daily Grind: Have you branched out beyond traditional MMOs lately?

Culture, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, Opinion, The Daily Grind, Marvel Heroes

As I mentioned in this space last week, I've been suffering a bit of MMO burnout. I've still been gaming, though, mostly via single-player stuff but also a smidge of Marvel Heroes. I was never much for Diablo, which is why my ongoing MH fixation is somewhat surprising. Maybe I'm just an action RPG late-bloomer, and I'm curious to see if I might enjoy something like Path of Exile now, too.

What about you, Massively readers? Have you branched out beyond traditional MMOs recently? How so?
