Well, I guess we could stay with SOE for DCUO? I mean, it gets a lot of hate for the missteps and lacking features it has, but what it does right it does really, really well. It certainly deserves more respect than it gets.

Warhammer. It's probably the most fun leveling I have ever done it just had a horrible end game and unfortunately the vocal minority always focuses on end game so when the forums went hate crazy and the chats got so depressing everyone started leaving. Now if only they could figure out some balance and sensible progression. But wrath of heros is probably the funnest part of their game in a neat little f2p package, so it doesn't seem like they care about figuring out anything.

Yeah, I'd agree with Vanguard. The graphics are going to look dated these days, but it's a very cool game.

But my vote's going to go with SWG. Yes, yes, I know. And yes, I was there during the NGE. And the CU. And before. Yes, yes I've heard it all before. But even with all that, AFTER the NGE (once the devs got back on their feet) it was a simply awesome game. Great crafting and harvesting, fantastic customization, absolutely superb player housing and city mechanics, wonderful pet/mount/vehicles.

And you could shoot Gungans. AND Ewoks.

So yeah. Even after all the NGE changes "WoWified" the game, SWG still has a special place in my heart. Played it for 7 years on and off, and I hope we see its like again.

EQ2 - It's a really good game. It started off not so great, but it turned into a fun game.

EQ2 deserves more respect from SOE, that is certainly true.

Might catch some flak for this, but I'd say EVE Online. It seems like people only ever see stories of scams, theft, or something like the recent insanity. While the "Sociopaths in Space" label definitely applies to some of the players, there's a really rich and engaging gameplay experience beneath all the terrible stories that come out of the game. I've played for over two years and was never harassed, insulted, scammed, or suicide ganked. It's a really unique experience that sets itself apart from every other MMO out there, but sometimes all of that seems to be obscured behind the small number of extreme stories.

@laelgon

I have to put in my support for EVE.

Bottom-of-the-barrel players aside, there is almost nothing else quite like EVE on the market. Nothing that has such a deep, player-driven economy, or such a unique progression system, or spaceships instead of gear (seriously, this is a big deal). Nothing that has maintained a steady player count GROWTH year after year, that has such extensive post-launch support (name me one other game - any game! - that has had *the entire graphics engine and ALL associated assets completely redone*!), or has actually bounced back from near-catastrophe.

Yes, the PVE rather sucks. Yes, they still don't have damage modeling in the game. Yes, you have to do some form of grinding in order to get your foot in the door. Yes, a lot of corporations have extremely paranoid or elitist recruitment policies. Yes, there is a lot of blobbing going around. Yes, there are a LOT of bad apples around.

Yet despite all these problems, I can't put the game down. There is simply nothing else like it out there, and it'll just keep on getting better and better.

Yes. And searing-hot magma aside, there is nothing quite like living in an active volcano.

Honestly though, playing EVE is a lot more like living at the bottom of the ocean:
It sounds a lot cooler than it actually turns out to be. There's not as much freedom as you thought there'd be, the environment is isolated and hostile, and if you do leave the (relative) safety of a regulated, boring and highly restrictive safe zone, you will require expensive, time-consuming-to-install safety equipment to survive the high-pressure crush depth. Even then, there's still no garauntee you won't get horribly fucked up by some random deep-sea abomination.

Personally, I'm going to have to go with "Buy the Icon"
It needs nothing else, is brazenly honest and great for casuals.

Neverwinter Nights 1. Maybe not what all would call a full out MMO but personally I think it is close enough and it is still the best multiplayer RPG...

@EndDream For some reason most people also don't acknowledge NWN for the great MMORGP potential it has.

I don't know about "respect deserved" but Istaria (formerly Horizons) is a game I would like to see get some love. To date it is the only MMO I've come across that lets you play a dragon race and actually has the race feel like a dragon. While I miss the original idea of Horizons that was scraped for what we now have it's still an interesting game and is slowly improving. It's one game I wouldn't mind seeing getting getting some money dumped on it or a quality sequel produced.

I enjoyed the original Blight system (kinda the grandfather to dynamic quests) the crafting and property building. The problem was that none of it was polished the game was rushed and it's history was not unlike Tabula Rasa after it. It started off as one idea and switched to another then it was rushed out the door but unlike TR, Istaria still survives.

Okay enough rambling.

EQ2 and Age of Conan, both of which are well-supported by their publishers, and both of which are more popular than the amount of press they get would imply.

But the big one is Vanguard.

Project Visitor. Yes the game is old and dated but it's still around and people still play it. Thousands of people used to play the game in its hay day. It still has its hardcore fans that are always around. It's one of those games that the more people that are playing, the more fun it can be. It has a bit of a learning curve but the gameplay itself is great. Nothing like you and a few buddies taking some tanks into someone else's base and trying to take it down while him and his buddies try to stop you. Some epic battles have been fought.

Man, I wish more people knew about 10Six back in the day. A MMORTS that is also a MMOFPS? How could anyone not like that? I miss glitching into the sky off the top of a UN trade building.
