...Eve isn't full of sociopaths and griefers? Have you read the Eve articles on Massively, RPS, and similar sites at all, showing not only the amount of it that goes on in-game, but that the players take out-of-game measures most politely known as 'social engineering' and other uses of real-life information? From what I can tell, the game outside the starting protected zone is nearly entirely *based* around this sort of stuff. Not to mention that the game explicitly allows other players to steal money you've put into the game (see the various PLEX robberies)...my only wish is that things could be set up so that if you play Eve it's the *only* game you can play, so as to keep the loonies properly in the asylum instead of spreading this stuff elsewhere. :-/

"I don't think there's anything fundamentally wrong with scamming and ganking players, and it's even OK to show tearful evemails to a crowd of Fanfest attendees. That's part of EVE; many players accept it when we log in, and some people get a laugh out of it. It doesn't matter whether the player in question talks about a divorce or appears to be depressed; it's still a normal part of the game."

This...is the attitude of someone attempting to *defend* the game. And precisely why I'd not touch that game with a 10-meter cattleprod, and suggest psychatric evaluation for the participants. *Including* Mr. Drain, if he honestly things that sort of thing is right. And he wonders why Eve has the reputation it has, if even those championing it think this sort of behavior is okay.

Lesson: Unless you're looking the other person in the face or otherwise know them personally, this whole in-game vs. out-of-game distinction is complete BS. All you know of them is what you're seeing of them in-game. And if that's the way you're going to treat someone who hasn't acted in a way warranting that response...then I'd just as soon see you kept away from society, thank you.

"Well, now I can say that we're officially being cyber-bullied as it is defined by Wikipedia: "the use of information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior by an individual or group, that is intended to harm others."

If by harm others you mean hold you accountable for publishing an article that was at best sensationalized, then yes, you are correct.

The worst part about your supposed journalism is that only those who look in from outside truly take your "news" seriously. The endless flow of self-righteous condemnation clogging in these articles comes from people who haven't spend 5 minutes in New Eden.

Those of us who play, by and large aren't saints. But we know our blogging community can outdo your gaming news organization any day of the week. Eve has it's own Pajamahadeen thanks to the inept actions of your industry. Your failure to accept accountability for your actions only makes it stronger.

Don't know why my comments from yesterday were scrubbed.

I'd still like to hear from the editors at Massively whether they've ever been pressured by other MMO communities to change their articles or if this is something unique to EVE.

The post above mine at the time I'm writing this by Urziel99 seems a pretty blatant attempt at intimidation.

I am a four year veteran in EVE that has withstood many attempts at griefing/scamming in the game and still had fun before this scourge of bullies grew. It did so after the "scamming is allowed and encouraged" news and trailer mostly and CCP is doing nothing against this but promoting and defending it as are the authors of this article (editing previous articles and publicly apologizing to a bully is pathetic)
I have unsubscribed all 3 of my accounts and honestly hope CCP does something to address this problem in the community and make EVE a better place to have fun and enjoy playing a game without constantly worrying about getting scammed or bullied.
Anyone not capable of these crimes is called a "carebear". As for new players please stop the with the "helpful community" crap. There is only one channel in the game that is helpful to new players the "Rookie chat" and the only reason its not filled with goons is because it is heavily moderated (the only channel ingame that is) Anywhere else you try something they WILL take advantage of you.
EVE was a tight nit community before, but it was never like this. I was appalled at the all the posts in Mittani's apology thread. Goons going around making all these news websites delete their articles, hacking their webpages and now attacking CCP itself? I think that's taking a game a little too seriously. Good luck CCP, I don't want to be a part of this any longer.

I don't think an accurate description of a person's behavior should constitute defamation. If the Massively policy is to not defame people ,how else could you describe someone who does what Mitt did other than cyber-bullying?

So what the dude says he's sorry and says oh I thought I said this... Screw that, this kid is just that, a KID and kids can be cruel. I don't massively's editors apology. I'd like massively's editors to apologize to Brendan for all the headache he's had to put up with week cause of some punk kid and his digital good squad...

I don't understand this arbitrary and nonexistent distinction between harassing someone in-game and harassing someone out-of-game that EVE players, including Brendan, seem to take for granted.

What does that even mean? Unless EVE players are all secretly roleplaying when they grief eachother, they're doing something horrible to a real, living human being, and it's going to have consequences outside of the game.

I'm not talking about stealing a guy's in-game stuff, either. I'm talking about the kind of harassment over chat channels that regularly occurs in EVE. I'm sorry, but anyone who thinks that it's somehow different or exempt from consequence because it's typed into the chat client of an MMO is an idiot of monumental quality.

So disappointed in Massively for bending over to Goon pressure. Seriously thinking about looking somewhere else for my MMO news. This is the most unprofessional garbage I've ever seen from a place I come to read news.

As a journalist myself, I can tell you: The only kind of irresponsible journalism is when you report incorrectly. The only kind of sensational journalism is when you report incorrectly. As journalists, you have a RESPONSIBILITY to tell the truth and never, ever apologize for it. And yes, Massively, you guys are journalists. Maybe some of you don't think of yourself that way because this is a video game blog with frankly embarassing/amateur copy-editing, but you're still journalists. Man up and make no apologies.

The only shred of interest left in EVE is in seeing just how many gullable people fall for their PR stunts.

CCP, has one(1) "go to" move in their bag of tricks... yet it works, every, single, time.

They create some trashy event, and then run around trying to put the fire out... ensuring you have a front row seat to the entire circus....

The Mittens is a paid employee of CCP. He is, for lack of a better phrase, a paid actor.
The ENTIRE stunt was scripted.
Not just the mittens coming out and saying what he said, but the ENTIRE response was also scripted. planned. discussed. crafted.

With the absolute intent of stirring up media frenzy.

The goons? Serious. People really think thats a random phenomenon?

I gotta give the icelandic funny man one thing, he see's how gullable his playerbase is, and isnt ashamed to play them like a harp.

CCP has proven time and time again, there is no floor to their shame. They take a topic such online suiciders, and then use it to light a fire around their failing game, in hopes of drawing your attention....

And you guys all run around doing CCP's work, definitively tool like.

"OMG, how could they.... Im gonna tell all my friends and family about this Online Spaceships game and how raw and crazy it is, but theyll have to see for themselevs... wheres my Friend Key trial account....."

Think, trashy celeb sex video meets ruppert murdock meets icelandic funny man is brilliant genius, meets stupid gullable americans....

tl;dr

There never was in the first place.

Yet look at the frothy foam dripping from their beaks.

Make sure the Account Management server is up and running.

Icelandic man genius > your sensitive gullable wallets.
