Honestly, these apologies are unnecessary. I've followed these stories closely from the beginning, and not once did the Massively coverage strike me as either irresponsible or sensationalist. I'm extremely concerned about the possibility that Massively's editorial staff are now succumbing to pressure from the sources they cover based entirely on specious accusations -- sorry, counter-accusations -- of "cyber-bullying." In The Mittani's case, the term was accurate enough to warrant usage; his counter-claims that Massively was doing the same border on the absurd.

I sincerely hope that the decision to edit the original article was not made as a reaction to any threats or intimidation. That, more than anything, would harm the credibility of this site as a journalistic voice.

I am HORRIFIED at gaming websites caving under "pressure" from the goonswarm, and at goonswarm actually getting THEM to apologize. These people have clearly been metagaming for FAR too long, and treat reality like Eve, with gaming websites just more corporations to be bullied.

It's sick.

If you're under "pressure," why not tell them to shove it and do their worst? Do their worst and just PROVE everything everyone is saying about them: that they're a bunch of a sociopathic bullies.

What, did Brendan wake up with a horse's head at the bottom of this bed this morning or something? O.O

If Massively was my ship, I would be flipping bothThe Mittani and his Goons the bird right now, not apologising to them - I think that seriously needs a retraction. Just saying.

@Shawn Schuster

Just so you are aware, I did read the entire article. And it's the cyber-bullying apology is what I disagree with. The original article in question called it for it was...before you changed it. So if you would like to provide us clear evidence other than this apology as to why was not obviously cyber-bullying, please do so. We have seen nothing that is contrary to this fact...thus we remain skeptical of Massively's changed position. And highly dubious of its intent.

I quite often come to Massively to read about Eve Onlive and I'm somewhat glad this clarification has been issued. I don't think any party has covered themselves in glory through out this entire episode.

I see from the comments to Brendan and Shawn's clarification that some people just love to perpetuate drama. Eve Onlive is an ADULT game and attracts all sorts of people. I've played it off and on for 5 years now and have seen many things that are harsh and unkind. I have never seen anything as irrational and baised as the recent actvity and media coverage.

CCP has been make great efforts to improve their sandbox game. Some of us like to play decent people in their game and their is a place for us. Thank you Massively for the clarification and hopefully we can look forward to many more articles about the game and not the ravings of self interested fourm trolls.

You do realize how this all works? The commentors don't post any articles for Massively. That's the job of the contributers and columnists...which are listed on main page to the right side. So eluding to that "we" have somehow hijacked Massively to spew out our "biast" vitrol against the injustices of the MMO industry and it's players, is just ludicrous to the point I am wondering who the real troll is here.

As for the clarification you highly speak of, it is anything but. Which has been well argued why it's not to the point many are blue in the face. Perhaps you would like to provide evidence as to why this article was a clarification. And why Massively was justified in making the apology. And we are all wrong self-interested forum trolls. Perhaps you know something we don't. Care to enlighten?

Both Brendan and Shawn have highlighted things in these articles they would have done differently in hindsight. This issue was brought up in 5 different articles in a short space of time. How much coverage did the rest of Eve Online recieve over the period of Fanfest? I'm hoping future articles will be focused on INFERNO.

As for drama seeking fourm trolls... well you proved that point better than I ever could.

And that's why your position will be viewed as complete full on crap...if you hadn't constructed these straw drama seeking fourm trolls that we haven't seen yet.

Keep in mind, I doubt anyone here (including the authors of this article)other than yourself views my position as trolling. I can't say the same you. /shrug

At the 7:00 - 7:40 Mittens says: "The theme of this year's Goonswarm Alliance presentation is going to be Goonswarm hates you - and basically just talk about each different little aspect of demographic of eve of how much we hate them and want them all to die and kill themselves. Like highsec miners, we want them to kill themselves; people who role-play, we want them to kill themselves; people with Titans, we want them to kill themselves. There's just a whole host of people I hope to really offend by telling them to commit suicide while on stage in front of thousands of nerds."

Time for that 30-day ban to become a permanent one.

Most of the Eve community are not sociopaths, psychopaths or cyber-bullies. Most are well adjusted people who enjoy mining, trading, missioning and some good old-fashioned PvP.

However, in any population of several hundred thousand people you're bound to have a few bad eggs and Eve's sandbox nature (which is otherwise one of its greatest strengths) allows that sort of person to do their thing.

However, as any long-term player of Eve knows, it's still possible to play the game and have fun even with some not so nice players hanging around.

My point is don't judge the whole Eve community on the actions of a minority of players.

I know there are a ton of good people who play EvE, I played it since launch and I agree with you. Just look to EvE University as an example.

The issue here is that EvE has been promoted by CCP as the "bad boys" game. They have elevated the minority and glorified the worst elements of the game.

How many articles are promoted by CCP of player cooperation and harmonic production?

No, the truth is EvE has a well earned reputation of players screwing each other over. 10,000 votes were submitted to elevate a well known jackass to the position of CSM. That's a fact, not an opinion.

Until the "nice" players in EvE take their game back, it will be controlled by the cyber-bullys like Mittens and his ilk.

This is ridiculous. The guy called for trying to get a person to kill himself and is now offended that Massively labeled it as cyber-bullying? Please, if anything cyber-bullying is not enough for what he did. He deliberately asked for action resulting in a person killing himself, he should be charged for criminal offense. I mean imagine if they succeeded, then what?

Massively has nothing to apologize for and Mittani and his Goon accomplices is the last persons to ask for such.

So Massively got cyber-bullied into dropping the term "cyber-bully"?

@(Unverified) And, sadly, the bullies were maddeningly successful.

Really, Massively, someone earlier said it's time for you to grow a pair, and I agree. A bully, cyber or otherwise, is only successful if you give in to him. Rather than half-assedly apologize, you should be relentless in your coverage of this incident. Or, even better, NOT cover EvE at all, ever again, until elements like that Mittens asshat are kicked from that game for good.

Eve has evolved alright. At this point I am not sure what bothers me the most. The original sickening actions by the CSM head, or the real life pressures brought to bear on a perfectly legitimate article which resulted in Massively's caving on said article. It is very telling to see this "Setting the record straight" article. I am not sure why you felt the need to publish this "apology" but it certainly was not because the original article was in error or lacked journalistic integrity.

Also an interesting point HPrime raised up in this thread; "So random dude without Internet spaceship friends at CCP gets lifetime ban, while Mittens gets a 30-day slap on the wrist, for using a CCP live event to spew his ugly rhetoric." It will be very interesting to see how the paying subscribers respond to this, if they do at all.
