Sadly, I am on the opposite side of the fence as you. I tried the 7 day trial WAY back when it was first introduced, then came back this past week for the RIFT LITE campaign, and I still can't find anything to hold my interest.

I have much respect for Trion, and I really wanted to enjoy RIFT, but I just could'nt find anything interesting enough to keep me past level 15...

Damn.

@Faction 3
The leveling of 1-49 is fairly mundane, run-of-the-mill fantasy MMO territory. But soon as you get to the level cap... holy cow does the game open up.

I'm of the opinion Rift should just give players an option of having an 'instant level 50' to see the game at its best. Unfortunately it might be too much for many players, as the complexity of the soul system requires some experience to appreciate.

Same here, SWTOR got boring after 1 50. Rift seems to have much, much more variety.

Don't you think that the fact that the leveling process is mundane is a significant weakness? I mean, life shouldn't necessarily start at 50. I usually find the leveling process in MMO's to be the best part, especially on your first character. The newness, and sense of discover is so much of what I love.

Hopefully, Guild Wars 2 will make good on making their game more than just a rush to the endgame. Time will tell.

If I was going to start playing a PVE raiding heavy MMO again this would be it, it kept my attention the longest and had the best designed dungeon/raids of everything on the market IMO hands down. Not only that, but Trion has earned plenty of karma points by not only keeping their promises so far but also by pumping out new content like a machine.

@The Moonshadow

I wouldn't call it raiding heavy anymore. It was at one time, but these days it's got one of the most diverse endgames on the market.

Please no more Raids...focus on the regular parts of the game and the solo parts. I know they're adding various things but I'm tired of these articles only focusing on these large Raids. I don't have time to get together with 25 people and work my way through..but I would like to hear more about things I can look forward to.

@JohnD212 Uh... Then read the rest of the 1.8 patch. lol

If you think it's just a raid, you clearly haven't read the patch.

The problem is the tone of these articles. They added a lot more to the game besides raids.

As much as I loved RIFT, the fact that they have just stated that something as SIMPLE as visible cloaks could be "detrimental" to performance???

Thats like saying " yes, we are amateurs and we got lucky in making RIFT" - you have GOT to be KIDDING ME!!!!

That answer right there just cost them about HALF of their subscriptions. LEARN TO BE A REAL DEVELOPER PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If they can add to cloaks to games that are 10+ years old, something is VERY wrong at Trion. This might be the beginning of the end for RIFT, as much as I hate to say it.

They can create all these amazing gear pieces , monsters, dungeons, etc.. but not visible cloaks??? W O W what the hell is happening to Trion?

This needs to be looked into. Massively, PLEASE, find out wtf is going on with this game company and why they are keeping something so basic out of our game! Thanks!

Cloaks are an additional piece of equipment that needs to be loaded on every player on your screen, in addition to the fact that cloaks also need their own swaying physics. Adding cloaks now absolutely would be a performance hit for players.

I recall some other games where raid leaders would tell people to get rid of their minipets and to turn off cloaks during raids because it would improve performance for members with rigs that aren't the greatest.

@(Unverified) : LOLOLOLOLOL yep half of Rift's subscriber base quit because it didn't have visible cloaks.

I've been playing Rift for the last three months and I didn't even NOTICE the absence of cloaks until you mentioned it. Now that I have noticed it, I think I prefer it. There are two type of cloaks I've seen in MMOs: those tiny little ones that WoW gives you at low levels, that barely hang past your shoulderblades and look stupid; and enormous full-length cloaks that completely hide all your armour when you're staring at your character's back (as you do for 99% of your playtime).

We tried the Rift lite to join with some old guildies and I still cant get past the old engine, it just looks too much like Warhammer. I still hate the time machine and lasers crap in a game with swords. I just dont like the look or the lore, hell I just dont like the whole theam of Rift other than the Rift idea.
They should have stuck with the dynamic rift content instead of going full raid or die. They need to give free 50's for those that may like to see what the game is realy like, it is just a raiding game.

The game is not full raid or die and it doesn't look anything like Warhammer. Go troll elsewhere.

@winterborn It does look like Warhammer, mostly the backgrounds. It seems like they used their engine to build the game on. Unfortunately Warhammer has much better graphics. More time spent on armor, weapons, and character models. If you zoom into characters in Rift, you can see the clothing is one layer.

"but they are admitting the optimization is already maxed and wil not get better"

Here's their exact statement:

"Cloaks of all types (Guild or otherwise) are something we really want to do. However right now we’re developing the game with an eye towards performance, Rift is unique in the fact that we have many activities that encourage hundreds of players to play together and we don’t want to negatively impact that experience. You all will be the first to know if/when we solve this particular problem since you know we could never keep something that exciting under wraps for long!"

Nowhere in there does it say that their "optimization if maxed out" or that they're not "working on their own systems and coding." Hell, what on earth does that even mean? How do you think they add any new content at all or fix bugs if not by "working on their own systems and coding"? Also notice that they didn't even say that it will "never" happen, just that it won't happen until they can figure out a solution to the issues associated with adding it.

"If they never added cloaks it would be fine, but to open admit that they NEVER will because of their ridiculous answer - that says something. "

All this says something about is your own inability to read and comprehend a single paragraph of text.

Great reply. I would like to add that they came out and stated a long time ago that they only want to add cloaks if they can make them look good.

By that I can only assume they mean simulating actual fabric, which actually does impact most CPUs quite hard, especially in a scenario where there are 20+ players with capes, particle effects and a bunch of NPCs.
