Well, I'd reckon if I'm gonna be staring at my pixel character's ass throughout the game, It'd be female.

@henrylkr really? ..thats the best answer you could come up with, and you figured what..none of us ever heard that one before? Never mind that it has zero to do with the question asked. Grow up ...the "i like looking at my avatars ass" excuse doesn't really fly anymore.

That said, Ive played female or male avatars for years ...it all depends on the class/character i am making. If its an agile stealthy type character, i go female. Warriors and the like are usually male. I do avoid the fat/beefy models though, and they are probably part of the reason i roll girly on many of my chars. My main online gaming partner who ive played with for years and years NEVER rolls females and ALWAYS rolls big buff guy if its an option. Of course he looks like that IRL, so i can't really give him too much s**t about it i guess ..:)

@Resurge

doesn't fly ANYMORE?! this is not an answer based on a trend/bandwagon/fashion,

this is just the most simple, innate and TIMELESS quality of being a hetero man. we like the way women look. you'll have to learn to wrap your mind around it. it will never change.

First off, read that The Mary Sue article, was a really good read, going to keep my eye on that place.

Second, and more on topic, cant really say im tired of the beefcake as it is i feel the beefcake doesnt fit the role and/or playstyle i like. Im a guy that like sneaking around in the shadows, taking what i want as well as taking lives when and how i want. So when i play a RPG or MMO i generally play female characters for quite a few reasons. One i feel i can relate better to that character. I grew up living with my mother so i generally get along better with females then i do males (no im not gay, ive been married to my wife for 6 years now) . Second is eye candy. Yes, im your typical i want to look at a nice ass for 30 hours if im going to be sitting here for 30 hours male gamer. Third because of the playstyle i enjoy, i generally feel that a female version of my prefered playstyle is more interesting both character wise and story wise.

I'm usually all about the over all aesthetic.

For example in SWTOR hearing some of those voices come out of certain body types just made the whole thing look ridiculous. I lol'd pretty hard when I heard the narrator from Modern Marvels on the history channel come out of my beefcake Jedi Knight. Or once I made a beefcake Trooper then he was wielding this tiny rifle seemed silly but looked damn good when the Commando had this massive Rambo gun.

In general however I dislike preset options like in SWTOR. A slider scale between all 4 presets would have been ideal.

I don't get offended by it because its irrelevant. What would offend me is a woman who talks about false expectations/disassociation from reality from female avatars and such that then always calls big muscular men or avatars hot.

In the grand scheme of things its really more of an escapist mentality for myself and my friends. The shorter my friend the more likely they are to roll a big race and I am the taller and I typically choose smaller races. I think its more of why you play the MMO than your gender and your choices.

No, I'm not tired of it per say. All I ask is for more options to cover the wider audience of players' preferences. Chubby and fat males and females are sorely lacking in body type options for instance.

I like beefcake. in real life I mean, I have to admit it. So maybe I'm not the right person to answer this... But I'll play gnomes and dwarves and skinny elves just as well, so I also think body type doesn't have much to do with it. I could call it a bonus as I'll typically pick races based on personality/lore or overall racial aesthetics.

I like variety in my character models.

It is true that some MMOs only offer the "beefcake" look for male characters, but I disagree with the premise that that is a majority. If anything, it's a minority. As someone pointed out earlier, a large number of MMOs seem to go for the metro look for male models. I'm generally not a fan of playing someone who so scrawny that they look like they'll pass out from exhaustion the moment they strap on a breastplate and pick up a two-handed sword.

But I also understand that many guys do want "normal" looking character models.

SWTOR did good with its characters models, though it really needed at least two more models (one short and stout and one tall and slim). By far, however, DCUO has done better than any other MMO out there when it comes to preset character sizes. Nine sizes per gender works out great. No, it's not as versatile as CoH/V or CO, but it gives the devs the opportunity to place restrictions on character models to make artwork development easier, while at the same time giving players a wide selection of character sizes to choose from.

As long as beefcake remains an option, I'm happy. I certainly prefer it as a default to the effeminate look.

Most people get upset and its PATHETIC.

These people are JEALOUS of PIXELS in a game!!! Its ridiculous lol.

If you are healthy - you have no problem with it.

If you arent healthy and ugly, then its a FANTASy for you to strive for.

This shouldnt even be a post lol. Bring back canceled posts! Or PLEASE ask questions to readers that actually MATTER and/or make4 sense.

Whats the next post? "What games do you think SUCK?" then all the whiney babies can cry their eyes out about games they play way too much and rush through and now complain about LOL - sad.

i'd like to submit that while /you/ may not find this topic appealing, other people do. we're glad you voiced your opinion, but try and leave the name-calling out, next time?

and while we're about it, try not to make assumptions for other people, also?

I think this person may have a very tiny head. Thus the reason why we need sliders in real life. In this case, a cranial option from small to enlightened would suffice.

Yeah, sure, they're tired of the developers' idealized version of the male body -- just as much as the women who are tired of the female version, right? Right?

For laughs, take a look at SWTOR's "fat" option for males that has no equivalent version for females.

I actually play female characters as alts and a male as my main though...

I don't know what people consider "beef cake" but I try to find a male character that fits me body wise. These would probably be the "beef cake" ones.

But know that the male ego is just as intimidated by muscle bound men as women are with well...women. For example when I go to the gym, some men that just walked into the gym will see people more fit than them and just leave.

I've never seen women do that.

I think anyone that goes through the trouble to complain about what a video game character looks like has major self perception issues to begin with.

Not as bad as the homophobes who say "I don't play males because I don't want to stare at a guys butt all day!". If you are going to play a female character just do it, I play one for my alts but I don't add any lame ass excuses for it.

i wish more games would allow me to make the character i really like, which is the fat, wizardly sort. giant beard and big belly and thick arms and so on.

i've never played a female unless i've had no choice, [gender locked classes, i'm looking at you.] and will ostensibly never play one, even if given the option.

i'm not fond of the beefcake at all, and i wish it would die a hurried death and that we could get over the entire chain mail bikini thing, too, while we're about it.

@greywolf lol i would love to explore some dark twisted landscape full of nasties with a big fat jolly greybeard wizard at my side. Good example of a character concept we never see in games due to the beefcake phenomena.

Y'know...

I originally thought that "beefcake" was a reachable and realistic goal irl. After years, I'd say it's not, unless you do some pretty shady stuff.

But this is a game. Some understand that, others find it to be something to despair over quietly, just as some females do when bombarded by images daily of surgically-augmented women in the media.

There are males who despair in the same way.

/stereotype mode on

When women get bored with gender stereotypes they start a revolution.

When men get bored with gender stereotypes they roll female and start drooling.
