Are the zones/cities in this game instanced? If I'm in a capital city are there 10 other versions of it that I can switch between?

@Mtor No instances. Every zone is linked to another one through portals. Like going from Queensland (human 1-15 zone) to Divinity's Reach you need to take a portal.
To go from Queensland (1-15) to Kessex (15-30?) Hills you can again, go through a portal to the next zone.
Go into a capital city and you can meet everyone in there unless they're in their own home portion of the city which is instanced.

Lots of good info, thank you! :D I'm REALLY happy to learn that it's possible so far to use German voices, if I'm understanding correctly, because I'm in love with the German VOs.

So if I'm reading correctly, that means I won't have to have multiple tailors, artificers, etc? Or is it too soon to rule out BoP crafted armor and weapons?

@alycat
So far everything is pointing to BoE crafted items, and BoP items coming from karma point npc's.

Is there anything to account for over-population of a current area? Like LotRO has a system where if one area is too crowded, it splits it off into multiple. Is there a similar system here?

Also, great answers!

@Ocho
Yes, the overflow servers work in a similar way.

@Irem

Actually, that's not entirely true. Overflow servers are just used when you first log into the game and the server is full. Instead of putting you in a queue, they let you play in an overflow server until your queue is over.

@Ocho

As far as we know, there are no copies or phases of different areas (a la SWTOR). This is an MMO that thrives on cooperating with many players. Having copies of different game zones defeats the purpose of a massive game world and the GW2 system.

@Fumbler This sounds kinda odd.

From an earlier interview, they stated that areas have a population cap, so you can't have 500 or 1000 players in an area (just guessing, that limit cap might be at 150-200, who knows)
So that means you either get instances of that area whenever that cap is reached, or you have to be dropped into that area on another shard/server. Or you're forbidden to enter overcrowded areas, but that last one seems even more unlikely.

So, it's either instancing or overflow areas (not just servers) whenever an area/zone has capped in allowed player numbers.

I thought that was the case too, but I read among the information released today that it works by zone as well.

Another notable site has expressed significant concerns about cash shops selling items that directly affect game play...far beyond cosmetic items.Potions that jack up crafting exp..or experience exp etc. Hopefully questions can be asked in the future that will clarify these issues.

@Shadanwolf

They did say something along the lines of selling stuff to make the players lives easier... to be honest, thats not really game breaking. if they start selling above average equi0pment, then thats game breaking

@Shadanwolf How does that conflict with your gameplay?

Who cares if someone wants to buy xp potions. That doesn't make them any better than you.

I want so much to comment on this with experiences that I may or may not have had, but I can neither confirm nor deny that I was even in the beta this weekend. :(

Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions and including the video. I look forward to the livestream later.

Oh and thank you especially for including a bug, in video format no less. It gave me a big dorky laugh. Fortunately I didn't get any of my dinner on the monitor at the time. I'd hate to imagine if I were in the midst of drinking instead. :P

I support future installments of the live Q&A. It was very informative seeing a hodge podge of questions being answered that may not be brought up in an article.

For those that missed the live Q&A, there should be a recording of it on Massively's Twitch page under the videos tab. If there is another in store, don't be afraid to ask questions, even if you know they could be answered with some research. Elisabeth was very friendly and helpful when answering the questions we viewers had.
