Fantastic article M.D. Easily my favorite read of all the Massively articles on this CBT weekend.

The chance to participate in truly meaningful "open world" PvP where they actually KEEP SCORE and each little victory contributes to an overall win condition for my whole server is so appealing.

The WvW combat looks and sounds similar to DAoC frontiers more W:AR, it will be interesting to see how balance is achieved concerning some servers outnumbering others.

I can see myself just spending my entire time in the WvW since the objective-based mass-PvP is something I miss from DAoC, other games have had similar (Wintergrasp, W:AR city assaults, etc.) but not on that scale and not with 3 sides (I hate when it's only 2).

There is a player cap on each of the 4 maps. During the press beta in Feb they had 500+ in a single map, they are trying to increase this to over 600. If they achieve that, around 1800 people will be able to participate in WvW. Any others will just have to que up and bash some mobs i suppose or get into the structured pvp.

Whether they will go further and do a 3way split, so only 200 of one server can join each map, i dunno. If one server fields more players then another they pretty well deserve to win. Yes it maybe be frustrating for those who are really trying for their server, but luckily they will only have to put up with it for 2 weeks until they get matched up to a similar server. It will probably seem like a long 2 weeks tho.

"Victory in world vs. world grants a server-wide bonus called Power of the Mists"

If it were just a bonus for the winning side in the WvWvW instance, it'd be fine. But having it affect the rest of the server? No. That is not good. For every server that gets this bonus, that means two servers do not.

Having the minority PvP population (and they WILL be a minority - they always are in hybrid MMORPGs) determine whether or not the majority gets or doesn't get the bonus is just not right. It wasn't right in GW1 (where the Kurzick/Luxon border's position is determined by Alliance Battle wins) and it's not right here. Unlike in GW1, where you can just go Luxon now that the border is pretty much permanently fixed in their favor, if the server you're on ends up losing WvWvW regularly, your only recourse is to pay real money to buy a transfer. This is not right.

@The Ogre

so because of your biased pve standpoint you believe that yourself, and anyone else who doesn't participate in the pvp portion of this game shouldn't get the buff? why not? you're part of the server and believe me, pvp players will not be the minority of the players in this game.

no one cares about what they did with this sort of situation in GW because this is not GW, this is GW2. As for the 2 servers that dont get the buff? They lost? Losers don't deserve anything, you lost. As far as people re rolling to other servers, if you have been following the game (which clearly, you haven't been) you would know to deter people from xfering there is a debuff applied to your character when you transfer. The debuff (the durtation isnt set yet) makes it so you cant receive the WvWvW win buff for "x" amount of time after you transfer. Also, the server groups are ranked and regrouped after each week (or two?) so that higher ranked servers play against other higher ranked servers, etc. Another reason not to transfer. Will this stop people completely? Probably not, but I believe its enough to deter most people, especially if they are paid transfers (which I would imagine they would be).

Also, there is this thing called community, I believe this game will excel at making strong server communities because of the WvWvW system, another reason, people like myself, wont be looking to transfer.

So, with that all said, what they're doing as far as systems implementation for this WvWvW is right.

MMO PvP still is not my thing.
Same shit different game, sure would be nice to see organized combat not the same old cluster fuck of lights and toons.

Nice to see no real lag, but I wonder what the rig and connection are like ? Fiber & 2600k/580 sli or a reasonable rig and line ?

Were talking about MMO players here. The servers that win a lot will get tons of people who transfer, even if it costs money. Everyone wants to be a winner...even if they have to pay for it. Then...there will be the obscene amount of rage quitters because they didn't pic a winning server at character creation. Ranking?...people will buy their way to higher ranked servers. It may not be "right" or "good" but it will happen anyway.

@(Unverified) Yes, higher "ranked" servers. Even if people buy their way up, the 3 people that all have people buying their ways into them will be the ones fighting each other. Which leaves the people who DON'T pay to transfer fighting each other.

"uild Wars 2's WvW solves this problem beautifully by taking the open-world feel of world PvP and placing it into an instanced location where players are all put on a more-or-less even playing field"

Yeah. This is called a battleground. I seriously wanted to stop reading right there.
Is there ACTUAL world pvp in gw2?

Try Tera, you can gank people while they're in the middle of a raid. That should make you feel like a big man

I think this is actually a good thing, the WvW with the buffs. Anarchy Online did a similar thing with the Notum Wars expansion -- the winning faction (out of the 3) had a higher bonus to EXP as you were playing through the game. Did that mean that everyone went to the winning faction? Not at all, did it mean that some people did? yes, of course.

I think there are a couple key things here that have yet to be addressed before the rage continues - 1) How much of a bonus do you get for winning 2) how long does it last? 3) Can it stack?

Now, I have NO basis for this thought, but I would assume that it's a pretty small bonus - enough for a yay and server pride, but not enough to be game changing - it probably lasts 2 weeks (the length of a game), so that after you win for the next 2 weeks you have the buff, but if you lose that WvW map at the end of that two weeks, you probably lose the buff.

Would make the most sense to me. Also, since they re-rank the servers after every match, and match according to server performance -- there will always lower "performing" servers in the WvW that have the buff. It won't only be the top tier servers that have it -- every 2 weeks a smattering of servers across the gamut of the rankings will have it. OVerall, seems pretty fair and balanced to me

Those 10mins were the best video game experience i've had in the last 4 years, and i wasn't even playing.

If Arenanet can deliver what they are promising, it'll give the mmo community a much needed shot in the arm.
