Sad. We no longer develop characters in virtual worlds.

We magically have our characters leveled up to 80 (as opposed the level we've earned), to put everyone on an even keel for competitive reasons. It's e-sport garbage.

More meaningless PvP (a buff makes it fraught with meaning? I think not). More instanced PvP. Is that really what the MMO space needed?

@AnathemaOne If your complaint is development and this post if your FIRST choice for complaining then you're seriously narrow-sighted in the fact that you miss an entire industry fraught with the same stuff you disagree with. This is a chance to allow an entire server compete in PvP on a larger scale than a small team of 5 without causing the sometimes gameplay disrupting events of open world pvp. It separates PvP from PvE and amply provides lower level players a chance to take part in something larger than the level 10 quests they're working on. Look elsewhere for disagreement if you think character development is a huge factor in gaming. Ignore hte personal storylines in this game and the way for customization and unlocks and exploration...focus on a system they deliberately put in with built in ways around having to be 80 (Keep in mind that the gear isn't normalized in here either at this point. So your developed character won't be at the same level). Apologies that you're so against any views besides your own that you pick fights in the wrong places for them.

@AnathemaOne

Considering world PvP ends up being higher levels griefing lower levels 90% of the time? Unless there are STRICT rules in place, that's what happens.

This is more about, "I want to PvP and enjoy that aspect of the game, but don't want to have to "suffer" through dozens (or more) of hours of doing boring PvE nonsense". PvP isn't supposed to be about "developing your character and seeing their storyline", it's not inherently designed that way. It's about simple combat. The combat may be for a purpose, but there is rarely any kind of personal story investment involved. That's what PvE is for.

And I'd much rather a game shoot for e-sport "garbage" in their games than not. If they're shooting for e-sport viability that means they are putting a lot more effort into making it fast paced, balanced, fun to watch, and include a high skill ceiling.

@AnathemaOne You still develop your character, and your gear still gives you an advantage in WvW combat.

Formal, instanced battlegrounds and arenas are not venues for showing off your skill at grinding. They're sports contests, and for these venues to have any balance or legitimacy the gear must be equalized.

The arena and battleground venues were never 'MMO', IMO. You get to use your gear to your advantage in WvW.

MMOs didn't always have levels, leveling as we know it today is a meaningless carrot on a stick that should be thrown the hell out and left to rot. We need to come up with some new and interesting progression ideas, or maybe even repurpose some old ones, I really liked UO's, for example.

Translation: "I suck at pvp and have no chance at winning a relatively fair fight. Please let me gank and steamroll lowbies so i feel like a big man."

Do you really want to have level 10s in WvW with level 80s just waiting to get one shot? Get a clue. Also lower levels are raised to 80 in stats only, gear, skills and traits will still give a real 80 a slight advantage over a level 20.

Please get a clue.

@AnathemaOne Although this will prob be fun and I'm sure I'll take part.. a part of me agrees that this esports crap is really watering down the RPG in my MMIORPG experience. Then again, I started with D&D and was never got into call of duty online or any of that whole thing, I feel like online RPGs have been invaded by football loving frat boys.

Apparently some people are so intimidated by anyone expressing a dislike about this game that they have to start making up stuff about Anathema...such people are totally fail.

I agree that there is something to be concerned about here. I guess we'll see how it works out.

@Djinn

I don't think anyone's intimidated by a difference in opinion. I think people are tired of PvP gear being gated by grind mechanics and meaningful PvP being competitive only at the tail end of that grind. This guy's argument for that gating is the model that is used all the time and I, for one, am sick of it.

Damn this game, I might just have to buy it after all. No one can say anything really bad about it. Even TB in all his cynicism is actually anxious to play it. That has to mean something.

The video kind of reminded me of the Warhammer sieges back when I played that game, only without any apparent lag, which seemed to plague me when I played War. All in all it looked to be a lot of fun for everyone involved.

My focus for GW2 will not be on pvp at all. Though having said that it may be fun to dip my toes into the pond every now and again when the mood takes me.

So if your world keeps getting hammered in the WvW, then everyone in that world will want to buy server transfer items in the cash shop. Will worlds even have any meaning if everyone keeps jumping ship to the best ones? Sounds like an unnecessary nuisance to me.

Well you represent your home server in WvW. And to change your home server it costs a fee. I suppose if people really want to pay the money they could do what you said.

@(Unverified) Servers are ranked, so if your home server sucks at WvW it will end up being matched against others that suck just as bad, and that should give you some chance of winning once in awhile. ;)
