The fewer Chuck Norris "jokes", the better. The game that institutes a strict tell-one-Norris-joke-and-you're-banned-for-life policy will have a subscriber for life in me.

Could I perchance interest you in a game of "Buy the Icon" ?

Play on a European server. Most of us have never even heard of Chuck Norris.

@Seffrid I am European. I played on EU servers for WoW and now TOR. Norris has a strong presence on them. Only LotRO seems to be spared of him.

@Lenn That's because Turbine will ban your account for trolling... people talk about how harsh BioWare is...they have nothing on the Ban now ask questions later tactics of Turbine...but they have two very polite communities.

".... Turbine will ban your account for trolling..."

Wow really?! That is actually pretty awesome. I have some new found respect for Turbine now. The chat in Tera has me questioning if I even want to join that community. Granted it is beta, but the shear number of genetic rejects in chat has me worried. More game companies need to realize that community is a major feature of an MMO, so if they have no standards in who they let in, it does impact the enjoyment of the game.

Do you play on PvP servers? I have yet to play any MMO (incl WoW and TOR) on a European PvE server (RP if there is one) that suffers from any Norris references.

@Seffrid Yes, both WoW and TOR. RPPvP servers even.

Yeah, been playing mostly on TERA this weekend. It's been fun, but the chat is driving me a bit bonkers. I do shut-it of or change channels, but that can be a bit disconnecting/single-player feeling. Between the Trolls, those dissing the game, or those talking about recent game spoilers or other things it can be pretty "ugh"!

It all depends on the game and the communities that are attached to them. Some games with open chat are horrendous to the point that I will close general chat completely. However with those I suspect that they would be bad even if it was a closed chat.

As always its the community that makes or breaks the chat system rather than the system itself.

I love Tribes, been spending a lot of time in it lately and the fast pace of the game just doesn't allow for a lot of trash talk, it's easy to get frustrated, but easy enough to get revenge if you don't spend time going for the chat, the commands sometimes make it annoying from the spam, but it's mostly a good community that plays the game instead of interrupting the session for the rest of the players

You could always play Rift. Two factions, unlimited talking. ;)

Cross-faction chat, auction houses, and email are some of the things I believe Trion Worlds got right. It always bothered the heck out of me that orc NPCs could give me quests, but orc players couldn't speak to my human paladin.

But maybe that's just the roleplayer in me...

I'd have thought strict roleplayers would appreciate the limited chat more because it forces he population to accept part of the lore - that enemy factions are enemies. In WoW I think you can see enemy area chat (say) but it's in a different language. I could be wrong though - it's been a while.

It does make it hard with multi faction guilds though.

I would like a combination of both. There is a certain MMO that allows players to customize quick chats, and you can instantly give orders such as "wait", "attack this guy" etc etc.

There should be shortcuts for those kinds of things in MMOs, so we don't have to scramble to the keyboard and try and type 200 wpm. I mean voice chat solves this, but its not always available and there are a few people out there that don't want to use it for whatever reason.
