DUST 514 looks pretty cool, really wished it was coming to the PC too though..

What I think is going on is the license agreement with Sony doesn't allow for a simultaneous release on PC. I can almost guarantee that CCP was developing the PC version along side the PS3 version though.

@Maseno This seems likely. They've already hinted at a PC release down the line, and said there's a reason the PS3 version has full keyboard and mouse support. PS3 sales are sure to spike at the release of DUST if they haven't risen already, and once they've returned to normal levels I'd expect a PC release.

Dust 514 looks pretty underwhelming based on that demo they showed the other day. Mediocre visuals, linear maps, relatively small number of players per map, performance issues, etc.

The visuals look they have been downgraded over time. Look at the 2011 E3 in game footage...looked significantly better.

The idea behind Dust 514 was really cool but I'm afraid they screwed up on the execution. However, it is free to play so I will give it a shot.

@HokieKC I think the fact that you aren't impressed but are still willing to give it a shot shows that they made the right move by making it totally free to play with no cover charge. If the game is good enough to impress the large crowd of skeptical people who will try it anyway, it's going to be a colossal success. A lot hinges on impressing those people.

@HokieKC it only looks underwhelming because it is a PS3 game.

The inevitable PC version will bring along better visuals, more complex environments, and perhaps most importantly, much higher player counts.

They already confirmed that Dust 514 on PS3 can handle larger maps and player counts just fine, but it they're starting out on the smaller end (24v24) and will expand in the future if players want it.

Also they said during the demonstration from Thursday that they were showing a "small" map on one of the less complex mission types.

@Seventy X Seven - Even 24v24 sounds awfully small for an MMO that takes place in the EVE universe.

MAG, also a PS3 game, supports 256 players. Planetside, which came out nearly a decade ago, supports 200+ players.

@HokieKC

If you've ever playd MAG, you know that 256 players sounds cool, but when you're constantly dying in a handful of seconds from some stray bullet or one of the dozens of people you don't/can't see, you realize that it's not actually as fun as you hoped.

@Ebaon
MAGs mass number was also a smidge of a fine print.

128 vs 128... in 4 quadrants of a map.. You could indeed walk to these other quadrants and interact, but you'd respawn in your own if you died.

Huge numbers, yes, but setup close to be 4 instances of 32vs32.

A PC version could really unlock this game.

Cool trailer but we all know that what is shown with CCP games and what things are actually like is two very different things.

We do? I must have accidentally been left off of the newsletter.

I find that the trailers do a very good job of representing the feeling of playing EVE to a very large degree.

Yep awesome looking trailer...too bad the game doesn't play anything like that. In all fairness though, most game trailers greatly embellish the feel of the game so CCP is not doing anything different there.

@(Unverified) CCP actually has a great sense when it comes to cinematic trailers and they don't try to manipulate the viewer.

Now excuse me while I re-watch it for 20th time...

With Planetside 2 on the horizon, and Planetside 2 doing everything better, and with Planetside 2 being released on the PC, could someone explain to me what the point of Dust 514 is again?

Because it basically looks like a ghetto console match-based version of Planetside 2.
