Day one of EVE Online's 2012 Fanfest is in the books, and it was quite the interesting spectacle from CCP's perch at the top of the world.
As expected, yesterday's juicy news centered on DUST 514, and we learned a bit about merc quarters, skills, and objectives. The devs also talked about DUST's battlefield resupply mechanics (which are somewhat unique for a shooter since every bullet, weapon, and vehicle must be produced before it can be airlifted to the front lines). We also got to see the first real footage of EVE/DUST integration courtesy of a live orbital strike coordinated between a ground trooper and a capsuleer.
Today looks just as interesting, and the focus will be shifting to EVE as CCP talks up the state of the game's economy, factional warfare, and a variety of other topics. As you're probably aware, you can catch all of this via our dedicated EVETV Livestream channel, and we'll have more info and analysis for you as the weekend rolls on.

This certainly looks interesting.
I'm assuming it's limited in some ways? You do know how EvE players like to optimize warfare to death and a blob parked in orbit could well lead to a disappointing game play for one side if there are no limits.
Also is there any word on prerequisites for the ship doing the bombardment?
Things like required range, ship class, perhaps a fitted module (ground coordination nexus, as a random name for it)?
Are there relative performance differences in damage on ground between lasers, railguns, artilleries? Can missiles be used?
This is a very interesting experiment in linking of games, at least for the uninvolved observer =D

Only dreadnought class ships can bombard and they must use a special module. He uses the special module during the fanfest demo, and once the youtube videos are up, you'll be able to see it in action yourself, I'm sure.
I would imagine that the differences in damage will be handled just like it is in Eve - that is to say that the resistances of your target will determine the final damage done, and some defensives automatically have lower resistances to certain types of weapons.
As far as missiles, I don't believe there are any dreadnought-size missiles, but I play a mercenary and my character is Amarrian, so we don't fly dreadnoughts, and I don't know much about missiles. Someone else might know more.

Ah dreads would make sense I guess. Gives them another reason to be used.
Citadel torpedoes and cruise missiles are the dread class missiles I believe and are used by the caldari one exclusively and I believe by the naglfar as a split weapon next to projectiles.
Ofc at least the caldari dread I believe had real problems with popularity and for many "dreadnought" meant either the Revelation or the Moros (for station games that one; I hear things have changed a bit)

Sadly my reaction to the orbital strike was an audible "That was it?".

To put my disappointment into perspective the ships in Eve are absolutely fricking gianormous. One gun should have been able to take out that entire area he pinpointed, let alone the (what looks like) 8 turrets firing down.
Also to the first poster, I am going to assume that the ability to do this will be very skill intensive and possibly only in low/null. That could lead to space battles between opposing sides if both of the ground pounders in Dust have Eve corporations backing them up. From my understanding Eve corps can hire Dust mercenaries to "defend" planetary resources (not sure how this works exactly) so I assume the Dust people can hire Eve mercs to do the orbitals as well?
It is all speculation at the moment since I swear we have not gotten any real information for how long they have been spouting off about the game.

Well, what did you expect?
CCP wants to be able to run a successful game with Dust.
IIRC it's to be free to play with microtransactions, that means people have to continuously play and pay for the game to run successfully.
That means ground battles have to be fun to play.
CCP corporations/alliances/coalitions/blobfactories want to hold a planet and don't really care about Dust.
If BSs were able to unleash the power you seemed to expect, there would be no Dust battles at all.
Probably a spreadsheet pusher would determine (or anyone who did any amount of PI) that, if possible, it probably would be far cheaper to even just obliterate anything on the planet instead of financing or allowing any sort of ground battles to be waged.
Just park a well sized battleship or tier 3 battlecruiser fleet in orbit and pound everything on the plant surface into oblivion. Then rebuild your infrastructure.
What do you think that would do to the economic success of the game Dust 514?

I'm hoping some better-resolution and more extensive videos are released soon. I found that particular link a bit underwhelming. Also, the graphics for orbital bombardment -- both from space and on the ground -- are a bit "meh."
Cool mechanic; needs visual polish.
Looking forward to more videos on the topic.

If you actually watched the video you'd see that it is a battleship (abaddon) that does the bombardment, not a dreadnought.
So, expect the ability to be open to null AND highsec but it requires a specific module to be fitted, and you need coordinates marked by a dust player before you can target/fire onto the planet.
I'm thinking that the animations/sounds are still in beta and that it will be more significant once it is finalized.

The visuals were disappointing. The gameplay trailers shown in the past were considerably better.
The battles also look linear with a low number of players.
