With Sony Online Entertainment's heavy free-to-play push these past couple of years, Vanguard players hoped that they would not be overlooked by their digital overlord. Breathe easier, heroes, for this summer will bring thee and thine a F2P Vanguard -- and a big push for further game development!
While specifics about the F2P conversion are hazy at the moment, SOE says that players should look to its work with previous MMO F2P adaptations (such as the recently relaunched EverQuest) for an idea how things will go down in Vanguard town.
It's not just going to be a token change for this mostly forgotten title; SOE says that it has assembled a new team of Vanguard-loving devs to generate more frequent updates, including "general improvements and new content." The game's previous update was this past December. Coming on board to shape the future of the game are Director of Development Andy Sites, Creative Director Salim Grant, and Technical Director Todd Schmidt.
The announcement concludes with a promise for team spotlights, more information on F2P, and development discussion to come in the near future.

Disciple and blood mage are both great classes! And while I do not normally like playing a necro, VG's is very fun.
This is great news!

Outstanding news! I can't wait! I really hope this brings in players and the support this game deserves.

At last! Now I will never have to may a subscription fee for an MMO again.

@Ardwulf You will if you are at all serious about this game. Do some homework on SOEs idea of F2P.

Vanguard Forever!

Vanguard was a great game marred by a poor / unfinished launch. Played the game for over a year and had a LOT of fun over that time. The game offers a lot to do and the open world dungeons and such are a very nice changed to the instanced MMO market of today.
Sadly this may be too little / too late. But we will have to wait and see how it goes.

It is unethical for any competitive MMORPG to go F2P. Is this really anything other than transparent greed and exploitation?

Unethical? How in the world is it unethical to change your business model? They are still offering a product that consumers have a choice to buy (or not). Heck, it's not even a product that people need, it's a damn video game for god's sake.
Also, exactly who is being exploited here? Seriously man, you need to get a dictionary before you start talking about things you don't understand.
It's been said before but it bares repeating: Video game companies are in business to sell a product, make money and satisfy investors. That's it. Get over yourself.

Pretty soon, the Station Pass won't have any reason to be sold if Sony keeps turning all their games into F2P projects.
I mean, why pay for 'all access' to every mmos when all the good ones they have are now F2P?

Yes, I have two station access accounts and play EQ2 and Vanguard on both. I USED to play SWG, as well. /sniff /curses LucasArts once again.
I will probably keep at least one of the station accounts just for the "gold" benefits.

Vanguard has the deepest RPG exeperience of any MMO I've played and it always made me sad to see it dying on the vine. I truely hope it gets some honest to goodness development.
The game would be so great if it had a full server. So many huge cities and dungeons that are just empty.

and because so many people say things like this Vanguard has the most potential for the most explosive growth of any other f2p conversion.
so many people site how great the game is for the type of game that it is (including myself), and say the main reason they don't play is because of the population, and feeling like nobody is working on it. both those problems will be solved, and it could have huge exponential growth due to this.

When I saw this, I was like HELLZ YEAH!!!
I'm really looking forward to getting back into Vanguard, way to go Sony! My desktop is full of your free to play MMO games, of which I have a hefty cash shop wallet to spend where I want, when I want. I can't wait to add Vanguard to the list.

best MMO news I've seen in ages.
i still remain skeptical about this dev business, i've heard that line before regarding devs and Vanguard.

I've never heard of this game before, I suppose I'll check it out when it goes F2P.

I'm interested, but Sony's prior F2P offerings in Everquest 2 leave me lukewarm to the idea. I really didn't like the way they had the cash shop set up there and if they do a similar thing here, especially in terms of locking out particular classes in expectation of a fee, I doubt my enthusiasm will last long.

Buy it cheap now, and make one of every class. If EQ2 is anything to go by, you'll get to keep them when it goes F2P.

I'll have to try it when it does. And wow, I'm surprised Jeremy didn't get to do this write-up since he's the only Massively staff member I know that plays it (and streams it even).
