With Sony Online Entertainment's heavy free-to-play push these past couple of years, Vanguard players hoped that they would not be overlooked by their digital overlord. Breathe easier, heroes, for this summer will bring thee and thine a F2P Vanguard -- and a big push for further game development!
While specifics about the F2P conversion are hazy at the moment, SOE says that players should look to its work with previous MMO F2P adaptations (such as the recently relaunched EverQuest) for an idea how things will go down in Vanguard town.
It's not just going to be a token change for this mostly forgotten title; SOE says that it has assembled a new team of Vanguard-loving devs to generate more frequent updates, including "general improvements and new content." The game's previous update was this past December. Coming on board to shape the future of the game are Director of Development Andy Sites, Creative Director Salim Grant, and Technical Director Todd Schmidt.
The announcement concludes with a promise for team spotlights, more information on F2P, and development discussion to come in the near future.

Finally! This is one of the games that deserved this transition the most.
It seems SOE is changing their entire MMO portfolio to free-to-play.

Makes sense, they made a ton of money off stuff like Free Realms, and DCU picked up quite a bit once it went F2P as well. I'll die if they announce EQ Next as Free to play from day one, or buy ti play like guildwars.

I hope this "Buy to Play"/"Free to Play" thing catches fire soon. I'd rather have EVER game be buy to play with expansion packs. Y'know, the way games used to be before idiots started buying into monthly fees...

@ShivanSwordsman LOLWUT? MMO's have always been pay to play until recently. Hell, if you go back far enough to something like gemstone 3 they used to charge you insane amounts of money PER HOUR of play. The only idiot I see here is you.

When did I say I was talking strictly MMOs? Before you morons started paying $15 a month, we used to buy our games... and own them... and not have to pay to keep playing. I grew up in the days of the NES, so when I pulled out my cartridges and wanted to play, I didn't have to put in quarters that would magically reappear in the company's office, or in their magic money bin where they swim in kid's change (you know Capcom has one of these...)
Yes, we had online games we didn't pay for, too. That was later, when PCs became a huge thing. Doom and the like started out rocky, then we had master servers (like with Starsiege Tribes, which also had the Tribes RPG mod, a PERSISTANT RPG WORLD created by modders...)... the list goes on. As it stands, you pay for the game, you don't even own it, and you literally rent the right to play the game. And for what?
Customer service? All I hear are horror stories from even the richest. Servers? Lag lag lag is all they scream, it takes people LEAVING to get the servers to actually work right. Patches? Every 2 or 3 months at best, and usually they aren't massive, mindblowing changes that you'd pay $30 for. You know, expansion packs. Oh wait, you have to pay for those too... yeah. I'd say you're the idiot in this case. I can NEVER justify "renting" the privilege to play a game that I paid for.

It's about time! Maybe now this awesome game will get the attention that it deserves, not only from SOE but from MMORPG gamers!

Never tried Vanguard due to the lack of support. Going F2P sounds like it will receive a lot more support and actual updates. I'll definitely try it when it goes F2P.

FUCK YEAH!!! This just made my day! I've been really wanting to get back into this for a while, but each time I tried the free trial I could never justify another subscription given the amount of time I know I would have to devote to it.
Hopefully this brings the game some more recognition, because it has some spectacular features in it.

Great news. I really liked what I played of this, but it wasn't enough to subscribe... mostly because it seemed like SOE didn't care what happened with it. I felt like I'd be paying to be burned eventually.
With all of its good ideas (particularly it's really solid integration into its own social network that put's Turbine's with LOTRO to shame), I was scared it would just disappear forever eventually.
Glad they're making this move.

WOW! This is the best MMO news I have heard in a long time! I had to check to make sure it wasn't April Fools day first :)
This will be a GREAT boon for the MMO player. I am so glad to hear this!
