It's easy to forget from time to time, but no matter what level you're at in Star Trek Online, you've got a pretty big ship under your command. That means there are all sorts of people who need help, all manner of different departments to address, and generally enough running around to fill an hour of programming every week for seven years. The game's newest patch, which rolls out this week, aims to address that feel by adding several assignment contacts to your ship interior, fleshing out the ship and offering you another set of content to explore.
Some of the assignments offered within your ship are new, while others allow you to further focus your efforts on a given commendation category. Almost all of them involve seeking out and speaking to the appropriate part of your duty roster, meaning that your Engineering officer will be in charge of a plethora of Engineering-related assignments. It's a great chance to get to know your crew as more than just piles of stats, and it should give you just a bit more of that ever-important Star Trek feel.

I was messing around with this on the PTR.
All kinds of new missions are available inside the ship. Anything from ordering a drink in the mess hall to building a torpedo platform.

Here's hoping they move the talking heads to your viewscreen/bridge.

Ugh, i really wish someone more competent and well funded could get their hands on this IP. The whole duty officers system is interesting in concept, but (from a very cursory look, a couple of months ago) seems as unpolished as the rest of the game.

It'd be cool to be able to be moving while inside your ship. Battles from the bridge are probably out of the question, but being able to plot a course from the bridge would add something imho.

Agreed. Setting a course and then running around and talking to your crew would be a good 'next step'. Even have a red alert flash when you get close to a space battle (with a quick pop up in a corner, accepting the fight, or something similar).

Imagine a game where you needed other players to play individual roles on your ship to make it go. One person is the captain, one person is the helm, one person is comms, weps, engines, etc. And each had complex skill reqs and gameplay. Now that would be a multiplayer game.

Except when the helmsman is sick or goes on vacation. ;) However, I do think something like this would be a great Option in a game based in the ST universe, almost like a guild ship.

@(Unverified) Its called Starquest Online. The game is currently using the subscription model ($10 for 1 month, $25 for 3 months), very buggy and the graphics are horrible.
But some guys bought the game from the creators (who completely forgot the game) and are preparing to re-launch the game (with Better graphics, more features and less bugs) F2P.
If you want to try it, there is a 30-day Trial.

@(Unverified) Conceptually it's a compelling idea, but relying on so many other people just for one player to be captain has too many problems.

Indeed, the player-crewed ships, while a nice fantasy, would have probably been absolutely terrible in practice.

@(Unverified) What if it was a carrier. You have some people in command, some in ships, some on guns, etc. Its basically like an dungeon.

Overall, it is an interesting concept. I'll have to check it out in a week or so. The idea of having crew on your ship be more than clutter is something that should have been there for a while, thought he DOff system could end up filling this quite nicely.

Just gotten back in to STO now I have time for games again, and I must say I'm having a real blast, The new feature episode and now this update are reasons to stick around for me. even when things are quiet or I don't feel like running missions, I can chill playing the Doff Collectable card game (basically what the system is) And now, I actually have a reason to tear around my ships interior. So yeah, can't wait to give it a try.

Did something change to STO or am I en error perhaps; I thought that STO had oversized playgrounds/bridges. The room seen in the image here looks fairly realisticly sized.

@Critical Mass A couple of new C-Store bridges (the Belfast/Defiant and the TOS Constitution) have much better dimensions. There's talk about releasing more and/or cleaning up old ones, but no tellin gwhen that will actually happen.
I like this. You don't need to do any of these DOFF missions if you don't want to, but this has a nice RP feel to it.

I agree it would be difficult, but its just an ideal. Imagine if the entire MMo was contained within the Enterprise instead.
