I'm glad they're allowing this, in general. Good move. I wish it was there from the start, but better a little late than never.

I am looking forward to playing around with this. Thanks for the article, Larry.

Number 1 on my To-Do list is to move the chat window down to the bottom left corner of my screen, where I'm used to having it in other games I play.

The biggest problem for me, even with the 1.2 customization is that the character frame is still one giant single element. You can't separate out health or make just the buff bar larger. You can only scale the entire thing- including the portrait.

For a game that is as proc heavy as SWTOR, I think this is a problem they should address pretty quickly.

@Delillo

That's interesting that you should say that. That was one of the issues that we brought up at that the Guild Summit. Emmanuel seemed to be receptive. I think we will see the no-portrait version soon™.

@Larry Everett well, perhaps to belabor the point, its an obvious and necessary change. The fact that they knew about it at the guild summit (if not before) reveals how slow change can be. I mean, I don't expect any change to the UI prior to the official release of 1.2. Nice use of TM. Soon will not mean 1.2.

Well, that is a pretty good reason to go try out the public test server...

...but you did mention a big download, so I admittedly am a bit put off by that. I may let my curiosity win and ultimately do it, but I dunno. I do need a push, Bioware and some sort of in-game article of clothing or a pet would probably do it. ;p

I haven't been able to play swtor recently due to my psu and gpu blowing up but I really want to adjust the UI on my character. I have built a UI in WoW that I really like and it works well with my Nostromo and to be able to build something similar would be great. The only drawback i could see is that I am only allowed four bars and I didn't see the ability to make certain bars rollover bars (invisible until you mouseover them). I do that for my game menu, bag bars and the bar I put my professions and mounts on. There really isn't a "bag bar" but I would like to be able to hide the main menu bar at the top and have a small bar set aside but hidden for my mounts. All things considered though I will love messing with this if I can get back into the game. I'd love to see a minimalists take on customizing their UI. Also, putting the bars over your character is weird.

@Joshinu

Georg Zoeller mentioned at the guild summit that they plan on adding more bars in the future.

Yes, it's a bit odd to do that, but I started heavily playing MMO is SWG and originally that bar was on top. I got used to it.

The game really needs more bars. With no macro system, and the only way to hotkey spells is through bar keybinds, you quickly run out of slots. For me, 4 bars means normal, shift, control, and alt hotkey bars. In other games, I could have reduced 4 hotkeys into one slot. Currently, you barely have enough room for all your abilities. But once you throw relics, adrenals, and vehicles into the mix, I run out of room.

I never played SWG but I can see how having the bars at the top of the screen might work since it seems that you've just switched having health bars from the top to the bottom and bars from bottom to top. I hope that one day I can have the versatility my WoW UI has with buff and debuff tracking and all that built in to the game. Gotta say one of the most frustrating things about WoW is if I play on a new machine I have to copy my UI over and then copy the profiles of each addon to my Paladin's UI setting. To be able to export one xml file and use it for every character at anytime is really cool. I vaguely remember them saying at the summit that they were going to add additional bars so yeah, good thing that's coming. Only other thing I'd like to see is hidden bars or mouseover bars. It would be cool to be able to keep your bars hidden when you are out of combat. I'd also like to see a HUD for your health and target health. IceHUD is one of my favorite addons in WoW to clear up my screen space.

One other thing that would be cool, but all cosmetic, would be the ability to change the UI color from it's current blue-ish color to a red color (if you are Imperial) or really any color at all. Also currious how this might work with things like eyefinity from ATi cards. As it is right now the game has your crew skills and social tab open on the far left monitor and your minimap and quest tracking on the far right of the right monitor. I wonder if you will be able to keep everything centered.

One more question though, can you set the bars to "snap" to each other? So that they don't overlap or have any gaps and line up with edges or do you have to be very careful with the placement?

If I could have what I wanted in a Star Wars UI, I would have my health, my power/force/whatever and most importantly any proccing abilities appear roughly in the center of my screen. Procced abilities are more important - after three months of my Sniper and Bounty Hunters, I'm getting the feel of how much power or heat I have left in my bar at any time.

Procs though are a pain. I recently had to spec my Mercenary for DPS and the build seemed to focus on making best use of a particular proc whenever it was ready. Since I'm generally trying to stay aware of what is happening around me, I'm not staring at the skill bar or my avatar.

If I could get something similar to the thing they had in Rift, where proc abilities appeared in the middle of the screen to show they were ready I would really appreciate that.

I would love to have a proc button that popped up when the ability was available. Marauder have a really nice proc ability. We also have a bunch of abilities not on the GDC, it would be great to have some sort of indicatioin that those CDs are done that didn't require my staring at the quickbar.

1.2 update is coming in April right? I stopped subbing until this patch is out. Along with the UI, crafting is something else I am really looking forward to.

I'm one of those guys that likes the bare minimum so I can see everything in its full beauty... SW:TOR is a very hard game to do this in. Especially since I'm a healer. I've been toying with the editor on the PTS and I've made a bit of progress keeping everything in the bottom-center-ish zone, minimap and other minor things crammed in bottom-right corner, chat and other whatnots in bottom-left corner. I know there's more people like me out there, I'd appreciate anyone else's UI mega-purge ideas.

Being able to move my quickbars to the center of the screen is pretty critical for me. There are abilities that I just don't use because they're just out of my field of vision when I'm in combat. I'm trying to use hotkeys, but there's a trade-off since I have so many alts and I can't remember what hotkey does what. I can't wait for this to go live.

"You can also save your UI settings and use them for your other characters or under specific circumstances."

I have to ask, does this include keybinds? For an altaholic like me, reassigning keybinds with every new character is a pain, and as much as I like the game, I really don't understand why there's currently no option to share keybinds among characters. Does applying UI settings to other characters fix this?

Thanks for the article; I won't be toying with the UI too much but it's good to know there are plenty of options if I want them.

@(Unverified) No, keybinds cannot be saved to an external file yet, or reused for alt characters - but it was brought up during the Guild Summit and I think one of the devs indicated that this could be worked on and implemented in the near future. On the other hand, the fact that the UI itself can be saved to an XML file is cool, though I'm not sure if that's gonna be in for 1.2

Personally, I am keeping my UI pretty similar to the default UI for now, though I tend to obsess over layouts and tinker with them constantly.

The main reason I have opted against the "Retro" style, though it's familiar to me as I imagine it is to many other players, is the placement of the character and target frames in the upper-left region of the screen. Having the target frames close to the action bars means I can see active cooldowns and also monitor my character/target's health, buffs and debuffs, etc. without having to move my eyes too much. On the other hand, being able to switch between different layouts on the fly means that there is plenty of room for experimenting and for coming up with different layouts for different cases.

I love playing around with my UI as well as Addons etc so this was a big thing missing from the game for me. I'm glad its being implemented and will be an important part of my decision whether to resub or not.
