Just when you thought last weekend's Star Wars: The Old Republic quickie was your only hope for a free MMO story fix, along comes BioWare to tempt you once again.
The next Weekend Pass Free Trial period begins this Thursday, March 22nd, at 1:01 a.m EDT and ends on Monday, March 26th at 3:00 a.m. EDT. The company says its first open house was a smashing success, and just as they did last time, players will get to explore each class's origin world and faction capital. Pre-existing accounts are ineligible (as are accounts created during the first trial), and you can read all the details at the official SWTOR website.

I know that TOR is doing well, but it seems odd to have two free weekends so close together. The must really want the subs. Is a quarter coming to a close and they want that extra little boos in the numbers they can report and make their stock holders happy? Thats the only reason i can think of.

@Daeths no, they dont' really want the subs. They'd rather have the game go bankrupt. /sarcasm

Even companies like Apple and McDonald's constantly advertise and have promotions from time to time. Nothing wrong with BW giving more people a taste of the game.

My guess is that they are trying to do whatever they can to keep Mass Effect 3 out of any headlines. One big way to do that is to keep TOR *IN* the headlines, by any means.

@Softserve Well, enterprising gamers could be enticed people to make a whole new account to try another class -- thus inflating account numbers

They know they lost people after the first month for a variety of reasons, and have released a large patch that hopefully will fix some of the concerns. It makes sense to get people back to see if they like the new changes enough to subscribe again.

Please don't flame me - I'm just wondering if it is a coincidence that SWTOR's free weekends coincide with Tera's betas?

Doubt it. While it'll have an impact, I would think the more hyped games such as Guild Wars 2 and The Secret World will have an impact. And for your reference, I'm not a Guild Wars 2 fanboy. Not even gonna get the game till it comes down in price(Too involved with TOR), just saying hehe

Thanks for the level answer. I'm just asking because I'm having a surprising amount of fun with the Tera beta. It's polished and the combat was fun. Just wonder if anyone else thought it might be a factor making them nervous.
1.7 million subs is an enormous success so it doesn't jive for me that they'd be doing free anything. EA isn't known for their humanitarianism.

It'd be nice to offer this to previous subscribers. I assumed this was the case and tried logging in over the weekend. They should take a hint from Rift and offer previous players free time to play the game again, - it's not triggered me to resub to rift yet but it at least keeps me interested in the game.

Yeah, there's no point in offering weekend trials to previous subscribers because nothing's changed. The exact same circumstances that caused people to unsubscribe will still be there. Patch 1.2 is a big one, and wouldn't be surprised if Bioware offers a trial weekend to everyone then.
This coming weekend trial is a puzzle, tho. They've already put out the 7-day friend recruitment and the previous weekend trial. This just seems rather desperate.

Good things happen when you lower the barriers to entry. The few remaining p2p games are slowly figuring that out.

@Daemodand Anyone can lower prices and go "free to play" - it's not hard.
But the companies should be trying to innovate and garnering subs that way... they've got it backwards.
