GDC 2012: Watch Funcom's full The Secret World presentation

If you found your appetite whetted for The Secret World after reading Jef's writeup from GDC, then make room in your life for 35 minutes of Funcom's full presentation from the conference! Senior Producer Ragnar Tørnquist, Lead Designer Martin Bruusgaard, and Lead Content Designer Joel Bylos take turns showing off in-game footage and discussing the game mechanics at play.

Topics covered in the presentation include character creation, the creepy/sexy Dragon starter experience, how achievements work, story, crafting, and the lands of Transylvania.

While the video isn't 100% pristine -- Funcom apologized for the less-than-perfect lighting during the presentation -- it's so chock-full of information and footage that you won't even notice. Give it a whirl after the jump!

@Dunraven You know, substituting one part of a word with "fail" only works if that part sounds like or, even better, rhymes with fail. Just because it has an F doesn't make it fail-worthy.

Allow me:

"Oh man, my handkerchief ripped through right as I sneezed into it. Now my hands are all snotted up. FAILKERCHIEF!"
"Oh man, they keep giving me Sprite when I ask for a Coke. McFAILNALDS!"

I hope you don't fail to see what I mean.

Just so you know, 'Failcom' was coined a long time ago (and arguably with good reason) and likely not by this guy.

@Dunraven Im not sure what is yawn. The fact there making a mmo thats more ground breaking and unlike nothing else or your terrible attempt at a copy and paste troll.

Towards the beginning I saw a dodge or 'jump back' where the female Dragon back flipped away from a mob's shot. I'd be interested to know if dodging is available all the time or if it is a skill on cool-down.

Meh I know this gets me branded as a "prude" (which is not the case) but the intro scene would kinda make me have a hard time connecting with my character, because Its something I would never do, personally. Its totally cool for people that like the girl+girl stuff (This is NOT judging people, its pointing out SELF preferences), as a straight chick, I really am not interested in zee ladies, and find it hard to feel a connection to my character getting... (what appears to be) eaten out by one before even starting to play. I wonder how many guy players would have had a problem watching their character going through initiation rituals with a good old fashioned BJ from another dude? Many of you guys would feel disconnected by it and you know it. Hypocritical standards really bug me.

Ok ok... rant at me, you know you want to. Just to reemphasize, I'm totally cool with people who like the same genders. Seriously awesome all round average people thumbs up stuff.
I just don't really connect with my OWN character, if she's not really sharing my rather exclusive interests in dude parts and not lady bits...because its just alienating for me. *shrug*

I'm with you.

That's one reason I'm not drinking the "mmo story" kool-aid. On many levels It's not your character, it's a Funcom (or a BioWare) character.

@(Unverified) I agree. I imagine though there will be variations on this though if people prefer. From the sounds of it this was the most 'shocking' of all the intros and they are trying to create buzz, so that is no doubt why they chose this variation.

As a guy that plays both male and female characters in various games, that scene just didn't sit well with me either. It seemed forced and out of place, and didn't seem to serve any purpose at all. I don't mind when RPGs have open options to the player as per their character's sexual preference, just as long as the option is left up to the player and not forced upon them. The whole point of an RPG, at least to me, is to create and play the character I want, and not play someone elses character.

It isn't that out of place: each society has their own way of steering you as the character into a vision of the future (the Tokyon underground starter area)
- the Templar send you talking to a crazy madman who sends you into a vision
- the Illuminati strap you and drug you in order to send you into the vision of the future
- the Dragon make you expand your mind at the moment of bglissful ecstacy in kind of a tantric way and send you thus into the vision of the future.

I thought that it was appropriate for each of the societies, but that's imo.

@Jef Reahard but you've admitted many, many times that you're more a sandbox kinda guy and hate/dislike story in MMORPG's, so any kind of more immersive questing, like here in TSW or Personal Story in GW2 won't just be your thing anyway.

Frankly, if possible I'd vote for you staying away from doing articles about themepark MMO's in all cases, but that's me.

@(Unverified) Can they allow a choice for everything? What if my character wouldn't have followed the weird child at all? What if I wanted to pull the diaper down on the asian dude and run away laughing? Kill them all?

I get what your saying though, they should be allowing more choice or reactions for characters to do.

I havent got the hangups other people have, having been around the world and experiencing alot, that said, the overall video was pretty blah, nothing that would cause me to sub to it.

The only thing i see is this company making a grab for a young, male subset of the world population and hoping what we see in the video keeps them, again, nothing spectacular or even interesting in my eyes.

The character(you) don't have any choice,you can't argue or make decisions,you are a pet,a puppet.All I see in this video are suggestions and not once did she kiss her or do any other thing sexual.

She could be a Magus just judging/smelling the fear or submission of a new recruit.Getting on top of her reflects that we have control,you are ours.
