This is good news. The incoming titan nerf is even better news.

It's good to see CCP focusing on Eve again after ignoring it for two years while they screwed around with WoD and ambulation.

Can't wait for this. Frigates need a huge boost. There are 2 viable frigates IMO atm. Tech 1 logi needs some love and anything to make cruisers more viable in pvp roams. Also minmatar need some east loving.

When I listed which I believed the best faction ship was for each of the major roles... yea... Minmatar comes out being on the list the most followed by Amarr, then Galente then Caldari last.

Frigs: Minmatar
Destroyer: Minmatar
Cruiser: Minmatar
Battle Cruiser: Caldari (Drake nerf plz)
Battleship: Amarr
Assault: Galente
Marauder: Amarr
Black Ops: Caldari
Covert Ops: Toss up between Caldari / Minmatar
Interceptor: Toss up between Amarr / Minmatar
Interdictors: Minmatar
Heavy Assault: Toss up between Galente / Minmatar
Recon: Amarr
Command: Toss up between Amarr / Minmatar
Strategic Cruisers: The only ships that are balanced with each other.
Advanced Battle Cruisers: Minmatar
Carrier: Everything cept Caldari
Dreadnought: Everything cept Caldari
Super Carrier: Toss up between Galente / Minmatar
Titan: Everything cept Caldari
Logi: Toss up between Amarr / Minmatar

Frigates need a huge boost... ? Interceptors have always been good, same with cov ops line and AFs got their needed love. Frigates are balanced.

@(Unverified) I'm pretty sure he meant tech 1 frigates. At the moment, there are only two or three that are truly viable in any kind of PvP. I'd say it's the Rifter and the Incursus mainly, you rarely see others.

"To solve this problem, CCP plans tailor each to a specific combat role. The Slasher might end up being a specialised tackler, for example, while the Rifter could remain a heavy-hitting combat ship."

I think this illustrates the daunting task that CCP faces, because how can a frigate become a heavy hitting combat ship in competition with larger ships like BCs?
Making a niche for one ship can easily push other ships out of the spotlight.

I think one of the issues is that some ships are too versatile in an already versatile system. The new tier 3 BCs are probably how all BCs should have been designed in the first place. Fast and heavy-hitting but without the drones or weapons to defend against smaller ships. That could create a niche for combat frigates as anti-BC or BC escort ships. This probable wont happen unless the old BCs get redesigned along the same lines, and then we may run into the issue of only having one viable BC pr. race.

It's like a multi-headed hydra, kill one head and another pops up. :-)

Looking forward to seeing how CCP does this. It doesn't sound like an easy process, and certainly lots of feathers will be ruffled in the process.

"The Incursus makes the Atron practically obsolete, for example, and when's the last time you saw a Ferox, Bellicose, or Exequror in PvP?"

Actually, guys in our alliance use the Exequror as a can flipping bait ship. They've racked up a huge number of kills with it. Nobody expects a cargo/mining cruiser...and then they're webbed and crawling with drones.

EVE isnt really for "adults" with lives either. it's way too time consuming. it takes hours to organize ops and find fights, hours to raise isk for lost ships, hours to travel around.

i quit the game when i got a full time job, and havent looked back. as great as it is.

I hope they don't make every race the same.... I don't want to have a Amarr ECM boat, or a minmatar drone boat... What makes EVE interesting is that races are different, they have different benefits and drawbacks.

@Khai mann

This is exactly what I was thinking. Just like when they made each race all the same (except for looks). Very annoying.

New month-long skills to queue before being able not to suck badly? How exciting!

No wonder people grind ISK in incursions like there is no tomorrow and PLEX prices grow by 40-50% per year - substantial part of player base (I'd say 30% based on amount of PLEX being sold - around 3k daily afaik) don't want to pay real money for the game without new content during last 3 years.

it's way too early for me to be excited by this.. so far it's hype to me it's hype and may actually mean nothing. yes destroyers needed some attention .. but is anyone every really in a destroyer long enough to matter?

There are other ship things I think are more important and easier to fix... the primary one being insurance...

@dajones "...but is anyone every really in a destroyer long enough to matter?"

Thrashers sure see a lot of use. But that aside, your comment points out just how bad the problem is. If people are skipping out of a class entirely, or getting out as fast as they can, obviously something it very wrong with that class. And it's not just that there are bigger things to move on to -- a lot of people absolutely despise flying slower, bulky behemoths. Where that balance lies between a frigate and a battleship differs from person to person; some people swear by battlecruisers, some people can't stand them and stick to cruisers. Not many people stick with destroyers, Thrasher fans excepted. This highlights just how badly they need some love. Insurance is a relatively minor, unimportant problem in comparison...

IF

"CCP plans tailor each to a specific combat role."

"This new system would come with one hell of a down-side, though, as ships operating in roles outside the one assigned by CCP would be at a disadvantage. That would be a real shame, as it would take away a little bit of EVE's sandbox freedom. EVE is full of examples of people using ships for purposes other than their intended uses,.."

THEN ? :

1 ) When I see a certain hull I know it is (almost always) setup a certain way ?
Like, an Osprey is always a miner, a Blackbird always E-War ?
Peeps just follow some forum guide formula to setup each hull ?
Dumber :(

-or-

2) Will there be a 'General Purpose' hull in each weight class ?
Like a Cruiser Hull with no bonuses but a bit more Pwr, CPU, or extra Slot(s) ?
I see that Hull coming and I don't know WTF it may be planning ? (unless I can scan it).
Smarter Sandbox :)

I have an alt that is purely aimed at using Carriers. Under the new rules, I will have wasted over two months of training time on battleships (I trained two races), a skill which I will never use on that character, because I have other characters who already fulfil that role.

I have to say, this feels a bit painful, given the time it has taken. I'd like to see that as an optional refund on skill points if I will only need Battleship IV moving forward to get into a capital.
