yeah, its funny how things roll.

2008-2011 was an insanely long, dry season with the single exception of Rift, which isnt bad, but then it isnt really THAT good. The rest were inmense piles of horse sh...

and then all of a sudden, GW2, TSW, and TERA about to release within a few months of each other.
factor in F2P games like PS2 or FireFall. and while not MMOs per se, you can drop cooperative games like D3 or TL2 in the mix.

I think in 2012 I'll get more hours clocked in front of my PC than in the 5 past years together

Oh! And it's going to be a F2P, browser-based, Facebook game!

Okay so maybe not really but seriously? This year? I'm all for all the MMOs this world can handle but seems a little too optimistic. Maybe work out all the bugs and broaden the customer base in discounts for KoA first?

No doubt.. the world hasn't seen one bit of this game beyond what, some art screens? And they seriously expect us to take a 2012 release date seriously?

I guess if they want to skip the whole beta thing..

Sounds as though it is sharing a world and perhaps even technology with a current game.

Perhaps they have been developed in tandem and it is near completion.

Why do games need to be hyped for years? there is plenty of time for promotion 'till the end of the year.

@Dumac

There's a lot of competition from other games that have had multi-year marketing pushes, though.

It does strike me as a little crazy for a game that no one seems to know anything about to launch against stuff like Guild Wars 2 and WoW: Mists of Pandaria.

Amalur's lore/world was incredibly dry and generic. I can't say I'm particularly excited about this any more, unless the gameplay turns out to be something very impressive.

Agreed.

Not to mention that game itself was fuc*** up on many other fronts as well.

I also agree with you.

There was nothing compelling, interesting, or particularly original about the formulaic "you are the Only One" who can forge your own fate blah-de-blah story in this game.

There were good things about this game, but as a player for whom story/lore is of major importance, I would not be interested in playing an Amalur MMO.

Yikes, I wasn't even planning on picking up KoA until next year at the earliest when they come out with the inevitable "complete" edition. Oh well, I think GW2 and D3 pretty much have a lock on my time this year anyways.

I'll never know how good any of these other MMO's could be...but I'll sure be enjoying the hell out of Guild Wars 2! (Only been waiting 5 or 6 years. I've lost track!)

Glad it's still on, I thought they might reconsider the MMO if Reckoning proves a success... now what about the fanbase they built on consoles... I doubt a new studio can bring a multiplatform MMO if it took even SOE so long.

I rather enjoyed Reckoning. Great story and world to explore. Not a big fan of the "actiony" play (I tend to expect my elf to do all the jumping and dodging not me) but hoping that's not part of the MMO.

I can't imagine the game will come out this year but stranger things have happened. I mean Rift sorta just snuck up on us.

Game really needs a Rift style release with those sorta features... not SWTOR sorta features (missing lots of common mmo features) but if it doesn't have the voiced/cut-scene quest system I'll be sad. I am so done with walls of text.

Oh you mean like..

Rift launch: No guild bank.
ToR launch: No guild bank.

?

Both games didn't launch with things they should have had. I don't think Rift should be the model honestly. It did well but even their featured events were buggy and broken from Day 1 when they put them out and their dungeons had MANY boss problems.

@real65rcncom Guild banks is what you miss? I'm talking basic game features and rift had them pretty much.

UI that you can configure. Rift had it, Rift didn't have the LUA at launch (does now) but that also should be a basic feature these days. If I can't get my UI to be what I want don't expect me to play long.

When I played Rift I was just surprised how things were just there. The crafting system just worked and was intuitive.

Should it have guild banks? Probably, but it's not what the user base other than few people will bemoan missing.

What I am saying tho is if a game launches today, like games did in the past and expect people to play them and wait for all the features mmos have TODAY they are going to loose a lot of people.

Better have a configurable UI, LUA should be there. Bloody better well have LFG system and the ability to make it cross-server. Simple things like being able to swap no-drop items between players that were in the instance when you got an item but accidentally rolled need.

People take all that for granted until they are not there. Don't make us wait 6+ months for the same features we've come to expect in our mmos to be built because you wanted to push the game out.
