@Damn Dirty Ape

I'm with you on that one.

My dream MMO is a musket-and-sorcery colonial America (French-Indian through Revolution) sandpark.

I've never really thought about it before, and I don't know how it would work at all, but I would certainly play a Zartan and the Dreadnoks MMO.

How about an MMO based on evolution? Where your talent trees decide that type of species you become rather than starting as a Orc Rogue? You can start as a spider monkey, then pick a talent that makes you grow and so on. Make all talents available to everyone but as you pick a certain amount of them in one tree you lose the ability to pick them from another. So say you go physical -- protection after putting 10 points into the tree you lose the ability to actually use magic. After putting another 10 points you lose access to stealth trees. Another 10 points and you are now limited to 3 trees you can pick from.

Also, make it so passive abilities are on a different tree as well so they never interfere, once you hit level X your form no longer evolves (say 40) but you can start customizing your appearance.

You could incorporate wings, multiple arms, natural armor, and all sorts of neat stuff. Sort of a spore mmo I guess.

Steampunk? No, let's take Bioshock 1, and create a heavily instanced MMO out of it. In each instance, you'll be surrounded by a group of around 20~ active players, who'll all represent some sideline NPC. Thus, the Bioshock storyline of doomsday repeats itself every two weeks, so that you, the player, will have to replay it constantly thanks to the server loop.

Say good-bye to dungeons, say good-bye to forced player interaction. No, the only real hero is you, the shopkeeper/random passerby/rich but insane freak, who's suffered enough of (insert mental illness; I suggest mild OCD towards your well-being) to create a meta-game out of simply living in the Bioshock universe. Attack your own foes, derail other players into similar insanity, and perhaps, maybe, escape the Groundhog [2 weeks] loop.

And if you do happen to escape, you'll be able to kill other players in a full-on, non-instanced PvP server. If you don't want that to happen, you're free to rebirth as a slightly saner player, and gain some perks in your multiplayer instanced world.

Now, to get that IP license...

What will interest me will be anything with gadgets, guns and girls really, I'm pretty simple at heart, just put those in different environments. If that paradigm doesn't work then one where I'm able to build.

Cyberpunk, Space Opera, Western, Lovecraft, Space Frontier/ Firefly-esque, Corporate Espionage / Spy Game and perhaps an action-adventure game along the lines of an Indiana Jones-type universe.

If done right, it could be a lot of fun. A Bleach MMO wouldn't be too bad either.

Anyone remember the RPG TORG? Where different "Worlds" opened up all over the world, eg. the US became prehistoric, Egypt had the Egyptian Gods etc and the UK went all fantasy they each had technology bubbles so for example guns would not work in the UK unless your hero was powerful enough to "make it work" I think that would be interesting. Or Cyberpunk2013.

Just how is it, exactly, that there is NO good steampunk MMO out there?

Here's just a bunch of random crazy (as in, not totally serious) ideas:

Medical Trauma Center MMO
CSI-like MMO
Urban Fantasy Fairy MMO
Harry Potter MMO (I seem to recall rumors about this some time ago)
Smuggler/Pirate MMO
Talking animal MMO (living among people but players play animals like cats, dogs, rats, birds)
Espionage MMO (pick any era)

Oops, I forgot to mention factions on that last option, cuz otherwise you might think I was suggesting a simplistic 2-sided human vs alien factions. Nope.

Terrans--

They tend to only trust human tech. There gear is big, slow, tough, solid and reliable. They, as a group, are also seeking away to retake Earth of Olde.

Alphans--

They argue humans must tap into their latent superhuman psionic abilities to reach their potential. They are fast, stealthy, can strike very hard, great at recon and support but they are also relatively the most fragile. Carrying too much armor and electronics is a greater mental strain on them. They, as a group, believe in survival, but think concerns of land, of retaking Olde Earth are trivial at best, dangerous at worst.

Deltans--

They believe humanity must adapt or die. They see the advanced alien technology as key to humanity's growth and are the first to scavenge, claim, use, adapt and reverse-engineer alien technology for their own. They travel average speed, but their armor and weapons are lighter and more powerful than standard human tech--but also less reliable. As a group, they want to stay on New Earth and secure from the alien invaders that are en route--the long way around since the stargate was destroyed.

Omegans--

They believe it's humanity destiny to adapt and conquer, that the alien conquest of Earth was a massive boon to humanity, unleashing human's latent super-abilities, bootstrapping alien technological progress for their own--as well as provided alien genetic material for gengineering.

They move at random speed, and what they lack in defense they compensate in offense or vice versa. With any Omega group you're never sure what to expect.

As a group and to a person, the Omegans want it all--it's only a matter of time. They want Old Earth, New Earth, and all planets in between and around. They like and use all tech, human and alien, so much they willing to bionically enhance their own bodies with cybernetic replacements--and to do the same with spliced genetic alien material. They are the creepy faction of the lot, jacks of trades, master of them all--just very very very slowly mastering them all.

G.I. Joe MMO? Oh God yes, on one condition.

No "on the rails" start to finish stuff. Include a series of story driven missions for leveling purposes if you have to, but end game would have to be real time global zone control. If the Joes and Cobra ran dynamic world events to vie for a Free/Occupied status, I might quit my job to stay home in a robe and play that. This stuff doesn't really work without a 3rd faction though. Cobra - La? :P
