@Jef Reahard

What about fights that need no tanks? or fights that need 5? or ones that need everyone to bring some tanking abilities and still enough DPS to get the job done?

Do you bring 1 full-on healer, or 4 dps each with a little healing? Does one person bring all the CC or do you spread it out? Do you want one tank to do the whole fight, or two that can ping-pong agro back and forth, getting healed up to full while the other holds the boss?

Just because there are healing, dpsing and tanking abilities doesn't mean that you can't do more than one at once, or that all of that role must be contained in one toon.

I think it was said somewhere most dungeons do NOT require a trinity but certain given skills. So, for example, you could have tanks with self-heals in group ONLY as long as secondary to their "tank" skills they have the skills required to beat the bosses in that particular dungeon.

Which actually sounds nice, but I simply don't believe players will be flexible enough and will settle for the old roles.

Emergent. Now there is a blast from the past. It's not a word you hear much anymore.

A sandbox is a game that lets you build something.

I think the skills, which allow you to build your "very own" build, are very much a sandbox feature.

Crafting I think is quite a good idea too from what I have read, but I am afraid it won't allow for enough flexibility to be called "sandbox feature". I hope I am proven wrong.

Everything else in this game is totally themepark, and the quests in the game don't allow you to build anything, just uncover the story.

I don't care what it's labeled as, so long as its well done and fun to play.

The one thing that scares me, though, is the mention of cut scenes. I've seen that overused in games before and it's usually not something that appeals to me. Generally, the games that use cut scenes that I HAVE liked, tend to use them sparingly. I find that they can, when overused, interrupt the flow of a game and disrupt its pacing. It's usually better to let the story be revealed through the action.

NO.

It is much too linear with instanced missions.

I had to create an account just to comment on this because I think the entire Massively reader base and writer's are the craziest bunch around.

Every article I see that gets stoked about removing the need for the trinity. I honestly do not understand what the purpose of playing a ROLE playing game is if you don't have a defined role. If everyone is a jack of all trades and you have no tank, dps, healer, crowd control, buffing class you're just playing a "game" with some elements typically established by RPGs.

I play MMO games to play with other people. I like the science of working together to take things out and work as a team with other players. If everything is lackluster, everyone is equally powerful in every way and the content is all solo-able - why pay a monthly sub when you can play Skyrim, Mass Effect, Dragon Age. Replace your monthly sub with savings for DLC or some other game purchases. I just really don't understand the hate of the trinity or even a quadrinity or pentrinity helptrinigy.

@nostologic ROLE playing game =/= having to fit into one of three roles. Why cant there be 6 or 9 or 11 roles? Why is a healer more of a role than a hybrid DPS/Tank or a Heal/cc role?

See but THAT is my point. I don't think that THREE roles is right - thats a wow creation. In Everquest you usually have at least 5 roles. Tank, dps, crowd control, buffer/slower, puller/ranged dps, healer, support healer dps. Usually you needed 4 (sometimes you needed 5). What I don't like and what this article states and seems like the general consensus of this community is this - "Everyone should be able to do everything or at least be equally efficient at killing everything". I am a little old school and believe grouping should be the main focus.

The game certainly does look beautiful 8o

I enjoyed the class versatility in Rift, so it's interesting to hear other game taking up more flexibility in the class system.

Very intrigued on this crafting system as well :)
