Nice to hear more about TSW. The ui looks great, clean and modern. Is the business model going to be a true hybrid though? LotRO's sub + cash shop kind of burned me out.

Funcom's not really talking about the business model as of yet. All we know is that it will have a sub and a cash shop at launch.

Funcom has stated the game will have monthly subs and a cash shop that will NOT feature any play2win items. It will purely be about convenience and customization, so I really dont know what people are complaining about.

If someone wants to pay 10$ to have a yellow shirt instead of a blue one, will that really ruin my game? Really? If the answer is yes then I am very happy not to be playing with you ;)

I just I am of opinion that subscription should mean no cash shop / RMT at all - whatever it is in it.

After all that for me was / is biggest advantage of subscription payments in first place.

You're free to disagree with that of course.

Nothing wrong with having diffrent opinions.

;D

I meant to say, so this is where you've been! Seems like SW may've caught your eye for the moment.

@Space Cobra

I've actually been in EVE lately, lol. TSW was just a one-time thing I got to demo at GDC (though I wouldn't be opposed to a beta invite, Funcom).

You're not the first person to ask about Anvil of Crom recently, though, hehe. In all honesty I will be going back to Conan at some point, I just burned out after two years of playing it pretty hardcore (and we don't like to write columns about stuff we're not actively playing).

Hrm. So I'm getting a bit of a mixed signal from you here Jef, as you first criticize the game's linearity (at least in it's opening sequence), but then praise its more MMO-esque elements such as crafting. While the system sounds interesting enough and I've always been a fan of Ragnar Tornquist's style of storytelling, I'm also really tired of...well, you said it best: "combat lobbies".

TSW to me looks intriguing but nothing has really convinced me that it'll be a full fledged persistent MMO world so much as a bunch of disjointed mission areas, open world and instanced both. Do you think this game changes it up enough for someone like me to treat it as more than just a quest/dungeon grinder?

@AstralEcho

I can't really say at this point, since we only got to play the starter areas for an hour. I'm not opposed to the cutscenes as long as there's some MMO underneath them, and from what they've said, it seems like there will be.

I'm actually not in the beta, so it's too early to tell (and I probably couldn't talk about it even if I were, haha). Bylos has said before that they do want it to be a world, though, which is encouraging.

Thanks =) I'll keep my eye on it, as the setting really grabs my attention like none other, just need to get my hands on it so I know whether or not the meat of the game does too >.<

Something inside me hopes that they took some inspiration from the Anarchy Online book of world-building moreso than the Age of Conan one.

so - was the combat of the tab targeted/ auto-attack variety or will we actually be aiming and shooting things?

Shame to hear about the SWTOR-ish cutscene design. I've always hated cutscenes - you're playing a game... no, you're watching a movie... no you're playing a game.

@Deliverator

It was pretty standard. Tab-target and hotbar specials. Seems like the depth comes courtesy of the skill combos, weapon effects, and the "builder" abilities and whatnot.

I really enjoyed the fact that you can move while casting, though. That's a small thing I guess, and not technically "action" combat like TERA, but it feels much better than those tab-target games where you're rooted in place while casting.

@ Jeff- so all character have a standard fighting skill and you can customize your character with 500 skills to choose from to make your own unique build? That is really interesting. Count me in.

Yeah I can't wait to play around with the skill system. From what I gathered, there will be quite a lot of gameplay to be found in just experimenting with builds and stuff (assuming you don't just go read a min-max wiki ofc).

" If you've never watched a lesbian makeout scene alongside a half dozen sweaty male game journos (and a couple of pretty PR girls), well, let's just say that it's hilarious to think about now and fairly awkward to actually experience." LMAO... wow. Glad I didn't have to sit through that in person.

I'm actually very impressed by what they're trying to do with the crafting, considering the lackluster throw-away crafting in AoC. AoC's was so bad that it's surprising that this is coming from the same company.

Yay, no classes. *dancing bear*

Sub *AND* a cash shop?
I'm going to say that won't fly for long. If I'm subbing @ $15/mo, pretty much I better have access to EVERYTHING.

Funcom is going to run head-on into Arenanet - who's selling only a game, and then supporting it with a cash-shop. If GW2 is successful, it's going to murder these sorts of "we'll take your subscription but also make you pay for shinies" model completely.

@(Unverified). Cash shop items are only vanity, aesthetic and non-combat items in both games. If you are interested in both games, money wont be an obstacle to getting and playing both at the same time.
