@jimr9999us I would agree with most of that but are you sure Rift has only 250k in the west ? I would have put it higher than that . Maybe you could link the numbers for Rift and Aion for that matter .

http://mmodata.blogspot.com/ and others for Rift. The Aion numbers are global on this site...I used some basic math and Xfire to come up with the Western figure for them...Aion's kind of a moot point since they're going f2p.

Rift doesn't need crazy sub numbers to be successful, they own their IP so they're not paying 75% off the top to Lucas. Plus Rift "only" cost $50mil to make.

@jimr9999us I agree even if it is only at 250 k thats still a healthy profit but I also think I should point out to you X-fire is not a good indication of how many people are playing a game given it is a program more popular with a younger age demographic . Any total you come up with using it will always be seen as flawed . The majority of gamers are unliky to use x-fire and many of them have never even heard of it .

@tenfootgoatman

Just to be clear, Xfire was not used to generate the Rift numbers, just the Aion numbers. The linked source and other info was used for the Rift numbers :)

I agree Xfire can not be used by itself to generate accurate sub numbers, but it is a large enough sample to get you in the ballpark combined with other data. Algebra does have uses in RL :)

Tor will not fail. Period.

It's got one of the worlds largest IPs and Bioware's name on the box.

But to me the game reeks of laziness and they've already gotten their last $15 from my wallet.

The game could have been so much more and if the game had come out in 2005 it would have been leap years ahead of other MMOs. But in 2012 it's substandard.

I hope the game improves, because those 1.7 people paying $15 a month deserve a better game.

@Quarlo

My wife loves the movie "13 Going On 30". I do not like it.

Does that make "13 Going On 30" a lazy movie, a bad movie? Does my wife deserve something better?

Or maybe the movie wasn't made for me to enjoy. -shrug-

I kind of felt the same way. I bought the game, played my first month (well maybe a week to be honest) and felt like I had been ripped off. 60 bucks down the toilet. I really shouldn't have bothered because I knew what I was buying..

And yeah, if this had launched 5 years ago, I'd probably be in love with it... but after 5 years of playing this game in another skin, it's not very enticing and I can honestly say that no matter what they do with this game, I won't care.

Ok. There are not enough haters, this is an anomaly.

I actually subbed in january and then 2 months in february (so I'm covered until late april) and am ready to sub for another 2 month after that. But... really... where did the haters go? To avoid massively to crash because of this insane bug I'll have to do it now.

Oh, I hate this game. Really. I mean, REALLY. Yes I do.

After a while, all but the most ardent detractors go on their merry way. I'm not sure you can count their complete disregard as a victory for the game just as much as they can't cite decreased server loads and xfire numbers as a sign of its' failure. Personally it's the only mmo I've regretted purchasing but I'm happy for the current players as EA isn't exactly known for funding sinking ships.

Plus, it is Friday, beginning of the weekend. Those folks may be elsewhere for the moment enjoying life in the Real World or whatnot.

My question is why is every one surprised? Its well past the "i bought the box and wont sub after my free month" point that cane at the end of January and since then there haven't been any real tests. I don't expect TOR to ever really die, but don't pat your selves on the back for overcoming a flat field when the mountain ranges of GW2, TSW and Terra are yet to come. Just keep perspective people.

@Daeths

You people give GW2 and TSW way too much credit. I mean, they haven't even lauched yet, and everyone posting on Massively act like they're the second coming. Here's a real predicition: SWTOR will survive and THRIVE after those games launch. As a matter of fact, if I were betting in Vegas on which game has more activity in 2 years, there's no doubt I put my cash on SWTOR.

For the record, yea I gonna play GW2. But I won't cancel my SWTOR sub.

@Daeths 1) As has been pointed out many times, GW2 is a completely different game which will draw in a completely different gamer than the kind that plays TOR or WoW. Not to mention it's f2p. It will not affect TOR or WoW that much.

2) Tera is an Asian MMO. It looks beautiful but it will not compete directly with TOR like you seem to be implying.

3) I don't know enough about The Secret World but when is it coming out? This year sometime?

@rgolch My point isn't that there God Games that will kill all others, its that Bioware is bragging about doing well while still the new kid on the block. There has yet to be any challenge as no games have yet been released since

@Daeths

GW2 - F2P for PvPers only
TERA - Asian MMO that will never gain traction in the western market
TSW - I hear they're gonna have a nice cash shop

TOR will do just fine

Well isnt this just a mathmatical oddity. Everytime a press release talks about subscriber numbers or retention or server numbers.......it always comes out to 1.7

laugh.

And by the way fanbois, any dev that uses the phrase "vast majority" is telling you all one thing for certain, they do not know the exact numbers and have made them up by generous guesstimating. Take note.

Not a WoW killer, but you could call it a WoW fenderbenderer.

I'm a raging altoholic on other MMOs, but SWTOR didn't really entice me to do much more once I hit 50 on my Commando. I'm definitely not hating on the game, since I want as many successful MMOs as possible, especially non-fantasy ones. So I really do hope this and other patches bring more to the table.

I wonder how many people had the problem I did, which is of all the people I knew who started playing, almost (but not all) of them ended up quitting. These are people who play other MMOs, but SWTOR didn't hold them. Most of them place a very high premium on the UI and the flow of gameplay, since they just don't care that it's got a cool story or voice acting if it lacks macros, custom UI and a combat log.

So I really want SWTOR to do all these cool things they're saying they're going to do, and I look forward to dropping back in and trying to get my friends back on board.
