Another raid? What about the eponymous rifts? Do they still play a part in this game?

They do. Ember Isle is a better implementation of dynamic content. The boss events are pretty lively, but they've also added onslaughts, where denizens of the rifts attack a focal point.

They do a pretty good job of throwing every group a bone.

@(Unverified) But are the bones equal for all groups?

They play a huge part. Hell that's pretty much ALL Ember Isle was about.

With every major patch they implement at least one new Raid Rift, and usually a few experts.

Rifts are the core of this game.

Personally though I quit because I'm sick to d@mn death of them releasing new content instead of doing SERIOUS bug fixing of the older stuff... hell every time I run GSB or RoS we see numerous bugs, some even leading to raid wipes...

For what it's worth, I've found that the fastest way to to earn the currency for the carnival is through clearing Rifts. We're getting a new Instant Adventure area with the same patch that's introducing this raid.

But it's important to remember that rifts are just one of many forms of content. The game is named after them and they hold significant story/lore value, but, character progression wise, they aren't any more important than instances or raids.

"But are the bones equal for all groups? "

Nope. Do they need to be?

We've got a dozen 5-man dungeons, both expert and some master modes, three 2-man dungeons, Instant Adventures for casual groups 2 - 20. we've got regular rifts, world event rifts, crafting rifts, PvP rifts and zone event rifts for casual grouping. For soloing they have a death saga, water saga and Ember Isle chain, each can take a week or so, depending on play time.

Is it equal? Not a clue. I dabble in everything, so I'm a pretty happy camper. I haven't raided yet, but since they've made 2-man mini-versions of most/all of the 10-20 man raids I'll probably get to see the new raid in one form or another.

@Ehra Which is what ultimately turned me off. The first few weeks, everyone was doing rifts and it was great, but gradually, more and more people stopped doing them in favour of doing instanced content. With a name like RIFT you'd expect the rifts to be a bit more important than raids, or they just should have called the game RAID. Had they changed the loot tables around, people would still be chasing rifts and it would be much more deserving of its title.

@Lenn No. They may be used in some ways, but it's unlikely that you'll see any big announcement about new stuff added specifically for the rifts. You're definitely not going to see any regular releases for them, as you do of their instanced raids.

The rifts are tools in the toolbox. They haven't been the serious focus of the game since beta, and they haven't had any real update since the first two or three months. Even then, it was a meager "crafting rift" addition that didn't get much attention beyond its mention in the patch notes, or at best a few brief comments on MMO sites.

Trion loves to ride on the coat tails of World of Warcraft, claiming that they're different while they do pretty much the exact same thing.

That's not to say that it's a bad game. It was, in the beginning, very very fun. Unfortunately they changed their game's focus early on.

What major bugs in GSB or RoS? I'll still raid them with my twink or sometimes with my main - and there are only a few occasional bugs that normally dont matter.

RIFT is a well polished game and impacting bugs are getting fixed fast.

The only thing that frustrates me about "bones" and where they're thrown is that raiders are always ALWAYS untouchable, and their stuff is always left preserved and reserved. I'm talking about the raid currency tokens...like you would EVER see them handed out in the careless manner that "Plaque of Achievement" (dungeon tokens) are being tossed left and right like candy currently in the C.O.A event (Right now you can do a silly ring toss game that is mindless and done in seconds. Your reward is 3 prize tickets. 10 of these tickets get you an artifact box. In the box you may very likely get a free plaque of achievement. -_-) You can be quite assured that Raiders would raise some holy heck if that happened with their "leet" tokens. But those other scrubby players, meh who cares about anything they worked on. Hand it out for free and degrade their efforts further. MMOs should not make you feel like you're in the 99% for opting to have a different experience in the game. Its kinda messed up.

@ChongShin There are new rifts in every single patch so far. There are world events added, which add new zone events/invasions, as well as Rifts in the game world. 1.7 added the current world event, which, during the early phases, has really cool Theater raid rifts in Shimmersand, and the silly "carnival" event. In the later phases it'll have Fire/Earth rifts/invasions. 1.6 added new T2 raid rifts, and tons of new, complex zone events (which come with regular rifts) in Ember Isle.

Obviously he's referring to fishing...which I think would be great in this game. The water is so great but there isn't really much to do with it. Can't wait!

I logged back in for the free period and started a new toon and all I saw in chat were ppl bitching and bashing WoW and SWTOR. Someone called them out on it and he/she was subsequently chewed out. Logged right back off and told myself I'm done, not a good sign when all ppl do is hate on other games 24/7 in chat

That means i guess you won't be playing any MMORPGs anymore?

I mean really? Trying to say that MMO trolling is just in Rift?

@Armaros

In my opinion, most Immersive MMOs don't attract this crowd. When I play LOTRO or FFXIV , I don't see these conversations - or in very small degrees. When I play SWTOR, WOW or Rift - I feel like I'm stuck inside of a 15 year old kid's MSN Messenger conversation while trying to play a game.
So there are games out there where this isn't a big issue.

I think developers really need to limit social interactions in gaming. It might sound counter-intuitive but if you've got an awesome game, what's the point of having 2 thousand people share a default chat room from the beginning when it's going to ruin or cheapen the experience for 90% of them. Why does a new player who's getting into the lore of a game, doing introductory quests and learning how to play need to listen to some braindead depressed teenagers 'troll' - which is the online equivalent of somebody beating their pet dog to feel better about themselves.

@TortoiseCan You don't need to you can ignore people, hide chat frames or leave local/general chat etc. Not sure why you think people are forced to read crap posted in general when you have so many options not to.

I can't believe people that play other top MMO's think this game is bad... But hey to each their own I guess!

This looks really great, and it shows that this team has what it takes to really push content out the door. For a company that has never ever released an MMORPG and then released this and made back all their investment and then some shows something.

I think I am becoming a Rift Junkie...

I feel that RIFT is easily the best theme park MMO on the market right now. GW2 and TERA might change things up, but for now I'm incredibly happy with this game.
