The Daily Grind: Have you ever traveled specifically for a gaming event?

Never for electronic gaming. I used to go to Origins, DragonCon and GenCon almost every year though.

Yes, for Blizzcons 2008 and 2010. Both were a great few days of putting RL on the back burner and just enjoying everything Blizzard.

Every now and then, but I stopped going to cons when they started getting big boy cash and the marketing shills took over.

In the EQ days our guild held a yearly Vegas weekend gathering that was great fun, but I never became a regular attendee.

It's tough for me to enjoy geek cons. The stink of marketers aside, if you've never been to one imagine the funk of thousands of randy males stuffed into an airport Hilton with just enough costumed T&A to make it really stink like a high school gym locker.

Cons were almost fun when I could go to a convention and rifle through cardboard boxes of old games and comics without being assaulted by some huge production affair. Now it's just too much stink and hassle for a crappy mousepad or a foam battleaxe.

Oh, and con flu. Horrible stuff. It makes the week after the convention a time for regret.

I might travel up to 100KM (roughly 70 miles) for an event. More than that, and I don't find the inconvenience worth it.

Not for a gaming event, but I did go to Indy for Star Wars Celebration III back in the day.

That having been said, if ArenaNet ever decides to throw me some airfare, I will be on the next plane out there!!! Getting me to come home might be the trick...

I would like to, but most are farther away than I can easily get to therefor far out of budget.

It was game related but it was not COMPUTER game related.

I have travelled for guild meet ups in the past but never for a convention of any sort.

Why bother when I can get better coverage from Massively or other similar sites without having to put up with the "special atmosphere", which usually translates as hot, sweaty and crowded.

I've travelled 2195 miles to go to PAX Prime a few times. Back when I was younger I used to make a five hour drive down to my old gaming clan's annual LAN. We would rent out the ballroom of this hotel and *every* year we would trip their breakers sending half the hotel into darkness. Heh.

It's not our fault, really. After the first year we would ask them if they had upgraded their power and they would say, "Oh yes, it's all taken care of". Of course, they didn't change a damn thing but kept having us back year after year. I suppose they cared more for our money than the inconvenience to everyone else staying there.

Good times...

I've never been to gaming event . To be honest if the majority of gamers act the way they do in games I have no desire to get to know them in real life . Having said that my lotro guild is so nice an helpfu and i ve known them a long time l I would perhaps attend a guild meet if one was ever held .

ive been to a mini-con for a game i use to play, it was just outside of Detroit(3 hour drive from where i live) but nothing else ever happens remotely close to where i live though. seems most cons or gaming events happen either in Cali or NY and those are way too far for me.

I ran a guild for around 5 years and we had several guild meets, most were held in England but we held our biggest one in Denmark, all were a blast and worth travelling for!

I attended Eurogamer in London too, purely because GW2 was there, those 40 minutes on GW2 combined with all the other games I saw ahead of release such as FIFA, Skyrim, Skyward Sword etc, made the journey all worth it :)

My Dad and I attend Gamescom yearly; last year we made the mistake of bringing my little sister who was almost trampled at the Skylanders booth by two lard asses with armloads of limited figures.

Con's can be great fun if you can ignore the typical gamers.

I traveled across the country to attend the first pre release Fanguard for Vanguard: Saga of Heroes and got to meet all the Sigil crew before they were fired in a parking lot a few months later. Microsoft was still scheduled to be the publisher and it was a neat event with a scavenger hunt (that we won!) for free copies of the game signed by the head honchos.

I probably will never go to that degree of travel for a game that isn't out, but I wouldn't mind going to more conventions. The people were nice and we added a lot of folks to our guild.

I went to Blizzcon. It was basically a bunch of hookers dressed up as warcraft characters, several shops to buy limited edition stuff, that you could also get on Amazon.com. The most interesting thing about it was some of the class discussions and the live tournaments.

Overall it really wasn't that great. I think if anything, it made me realize I played Wow way too much. It helped me kick my Wow addiction.

Now Dragon Con and PAX, those events are FUN!

Nope. if it isnt worth a sub then it is not wortht the time or money to travel and listen to some clown dev warm up the air with useless jabber regardless of how entertaining that may be.

No, I have not. I don't have any strong reasons to justify the time and money cost: I don't cosplay, my guild doesn't do real life meetups, and all the waiting in crowded areas just to play a demo doesn't seem worth it.

Sure... pen&paper rpgcons for years. But for videogames? Not once. Cant think of why I would do that.
