"probably the only time in history a multi-player game was made into a single player game!"

Not true. SWToR just did it.

Hehe, compare this to the wails of "the textures aren't high enough rez, it kills immersion" xD

I don't remember it being in color... but then I think I only had a monochrome monitor on my Apple II. So I remember a lot of things from that time as being only black and white.

I remember Islands of Kesmai, but mostly through Magazine ads.

I also remember "Computer Chronicles"! Sheesh! :D

Rogue-likes are still around, and seem to be experiencing a renaissance nowadays -- if you've never tried a rogue-like before, a good place to start is Dungeons of Dredmor.

I loved Islands of Kesmai! Played it obsessively as the character Tanis...DOOM.

Some of the stuff I remember...
They charged an hourly fee to play on Compuserve, and it wasn't cheap!

You would need to email a GM to get a guild tag added to your name.

I think that's the first place I heard the term 'Tank' because the knight class could start as a Martial Artist, then you could retire the MA, and create a Knight, who inherited the MA's abilities. It was practically an unstoppable 'Tank'.

Fascinating subject. You've really gotten into some obscure yet incredibly important work here. Definitely the best column in the MMO blogosphere. So you never got to play this one yourself? Did you manage to find any players as research, or just the creators?
