GDC 2012: Advanced recon of PlanetSide 2 uncovers hot zone photographs

Massively's boots are on the ground at this week's Games Developer Conference, and we've stormed Sony Online Entertainment's stronghold to find out any and all information about its upcoming MMOFPS PlanetSide 2. We've been tweeting the excitement from the show floor, and while hearing it is one thing, seeing it for yourself is another.

That's why we're bringing to you a mega-upload of 22 hot new images and concept art from this MMOFPS. Showing off a huge variety of environments, ships, soldiers, outfits, and action sequences, these screenshots are pure eye-candy for those anticipating this title. And after the cut, you'll find two GDC videos of the game, courtesy of PlanetSide Universe and tipster Kyle.

This game is going to be truly epic.

Amazing! I can not wait for this.

I enjoyed PlanetSide 1.. This game is going to be pretty sick.. No offense to Tribes, but it wasn't really what I was looking for in terms of scale..

Bases and vehicles are nice, but in the end they amount to nothing..

@(Unverified) Well Tribes is very different from Planetside. It's mostly going to appeal to old Tribes players not the general MMO gamer.

Finally an actual MMO coming out for once.

Got that giddy feeling I had back anticipating WW2OL's launch. It was so awesome on paper. Hope PS2 pulls this off.

This games looks really cool and I definitely want to try it when it hits. I'm just worried about:

1 SOE
2 PvP f2p

SOE, as we all know, has a bad rep with mmorpgs. Do you think it will be different for this game?

How will the cash shop work? If it's just cosmetics, that's is fine for pvp. Will it drift into p2w?

Otherwise, this game does look epic. Am I just a worried for no reason?

what you have to understand about SoE is that the games on their roster are actually pretty damn good. The real problem is their conduct... how they handle things after release... that's where the scary things happen ;)

Well, they said only cosmetic stuff. There will be a free level and a subscription level. They haven't said how its divided. So its pay to win that way, I guess. All the vehicles and armors can be customized so they have plenty to sell on those.

Playing DCUO and EQ2. I think they removed everything that was pay 2 win when EQ2 went F2P but I don't pay attention to the cash shop in that game past the sales. DCUO has only cosmetic stuff and pets on their cash shop. So I donno. Its free so delete it if you don't like it.

I just think it looks so generic, has such poor animations, the shooting looks floaty, the character models are horrible... though that is what you expect with SOE games, poor production values.

@Miffy you just described a whole lot of visual stuff, which, as you should know is a subjective thing... and floaty shooting? o0 2 things: 1. you haven't even played it yourself so judging the shooting physics is dodgy at best and 2. what is that even supposed to mean?

He means it plays like Halo, I think.

Could well be an awesome game in the US, but if SOE persist with the idea of ProSieben running it in Europe it's likely to bomb there and that could well impact on its long-term viability in the US of course.

At 6m0s in the second video he's talking about customization/progression and how it's going to be an horizontal progression to open to different play styles (a time-rich player won't be OP in comparison to a talented casual). This is exactly why we need these FPSMMOs to be successful to influence the whole MMO industry. The time of horizontal progression (skill and social proof) is coming.
