The Daily Grind: Are you an MMO hoarder?

My guildies will tell you I'm a little bit OCD when it comes to my in-game MMO organization. I keep a pristine inventory, bank box, and house, assuming the game offers these features. I simply cannot log out of a game without emptying my mailbox, selling off junk loot, and making sure every stack of ore is just so.

Other players game as if every MMO were an episode of Hoarders. We're not talking insects and pizza boxes here, but quest items from three expansions ago aren't out of the question ("maybe I'll use it for RP?"). In a way, I'm even a little bit jealous of these laissez faire folk, and I wonder whether they waste more time searching through their messy inventories than I do organizing mine obsessively.

I hoard money; I always seem to have tons of it. If only it were the same irl.

@nevin I'd rob you if we were playing the same game. I hoard everything but money, and it's guaranteed me virtual financial bankruptcy no matter which game I am in.

Remember those weapon/armor and item lists of certain JRPG?
I would love to see those things more in MMOG , a database where you can unlock items , and for maybe a fee you can get a copy the item in your database, Soulbound ofcourse. Useful and fun to maintain a collection.

I dont hoard trash, but I keep anything I might use or sell. I dont keep outleveled items around, though.

Tier sets that I love to look at and weapons alike I keep..everything else gets sold when it becomes obsolete.

One thing I do hoard in an MMO that is NEW to me is crafting materials and things that look like they would be used as currancy, and I HATE!!!!!! doing this.

I wish there was a little tool-tip in every MMO that said "This is currancy for ...". Or "This is useless". It would clear up a lot of clutter in my bags and bank while I'm playing a new MMO.

I'm not.. but a friend of mine is. In GuildWars he horded random anythings for *YEARS*... He has 32 alts, the max you can have on one account.. and about 80% of them are storage of some kind. Most of his alliance members laughed at him...

.... until the Traveler was put in the game.

I am pretty much the worst kind of hoarder, because I'm also OCD about it. The best way to describe me would be, perfectionist, completionist, altaholic, hoarder. I feel this really strong urge to create one of every class, do everything and keep everything I find on the off chance that one day it becomes useful. This extends beyong MMOs and into singleplayer games too. Take Fallout 3 for example, my normal session would go something like "ooh look a spoon" *picks up* "Oh look another spoon" *picks up* and I spend 90% of the time walking like a snail due to the amount of stuff that I've picked up.

Strangely enough I am ruthless when it comes to cleaning things up in real life. "what's that, a birthday card? trash it"

Crafting materials. I may not use them, but I like having them on hand for some reason.

With SWTOR, I also hoard moddable gear even if it's not something I plan on wearing.

Yep, crafting materials. If the game allows for it, I'll usually have mules to hold a little bit of everything. All too often, the Auction house prices (RIFT...ahem) are terrible, and I can't bring myself to vendor the goods. So I save them instead for any future characters and crafting.

I seem to ping pong a bit.

I go through phases of collecting stuff that seems useful either to me or maybe a guild mate.
Then when storage has become too messy or simply filled up I clean it out.

So far I've only ever been in guilds where there were people of lower level than me and some hand me downs I kept for a bit actually did come in handy, so I seem to be doing something right.

Sometimes I do lament the tendencies of MMOs to end up having optimal gearout for characters.
I like a bit of diversity so it's sad that most of the stuff you find ends up on the "not useful" side of things.

I never throw anything that's potentially useful away. I've resigned myself to a life of multiple bank alts and bag manager addons.

When I was playing SWTOR I had a tendency to hoard orange (moddable) gear because most of the high-level gear looks much worse than what the lowbies get.

Nope. Can't quite say as I do. If I can't use the item NOW or know a perfect pre-destined personal use for it in the near future, its gone and sold. There is always an auction house brimming with items to be bought, and if you sell those one off stacks you're not using, given a basic fluctuation, you can purchase them off the AH for about the same price you sold it for to begin with.

The only caveat are one-time special anniversary or limited time items. They represent more of a souvenir, an "I was there and here's my item to prove it", an achievement in item form. These I will hold onto, as they represent the real progress I've made in the game. Everything else is just junk.

I tend to hoard stuff (except true vendor trash), so I have bags and bags full of armor I can no longer use... but it lets me change looks a lot as "Appearance" armor (in EQ2). I also kept a bag full of crafting stuff from the first month the game came out in 2004, and almost all of it no longer exists in-game because they changed the crafting system in 2006! It freaks old-timers out when I link to stuff like 'Thykaloid Oil" in general chat.

The game plays to my hoarding tendencies by coming out with larger and larger bag sizes every expansion, and by providing a 'search bags' option a few years ago. It's all their fault! :P

I don't hoard intentionally, but with every game that puts banks only in major hub cities (which to my knowledge is every game except Guild Wars ...), my bank will get full of things I never use because of the inconvenience of the bank being out of reach most of the time. I put stuff in there and forget about it until the next time I come to put stuff in.

I also tend to hoard crafting supplies. The best feature of any game goes to EQ2 and the guild supply depot with second place going to GW for their crafting item inventory tab. It would be number one if items could be stacked to 10k rather than just 250.

I've never seen bigger hoarders than in Asheron's Call. They already have more pack space per character than other MMOs and they still say they need more pack space.

I personally like a clean inventory and make sure to sell off/destroy items regularly to keep it so.

The only stuff I hang on to is armor/weapons that might be good for an alt character.

I used to be... but then I took an arrow in the knew.
