Never played Aion before so I checked out the f2p launch, well eventually after a few false starts and a bit of queuing.

Bearing in mind I am low level and have no idea how things progress I quite enjoyed it but not so sure about the community that they seem to have attracted though. *Lots of racist, xenophobic and sexist slurs being thrown around so it wasn't a major issue that I was locked out of the main chat channel (I eventually just turned it off and got on with playing the game.) Not sure I would ever drop any money into it but it may server as a f2p diversion when I need a break from my other mmo's that I play.

* this was on the Nexon server

Those are pretty good.

What I have always enjoyed about Aion's lore is that the sides are not simply divided by culture where two groups simply don't understand each other. These two sides are separated by no more than a misunderstanding. Different recollections of certain events. And it is not really clear which side or if either really knows the truth of what happened either when the tower was destroyed or later when the Elyos ran into the Asmodians for the first time following the cataclysm. Depending on which version of the "facts" you have, it is easy to see how both sides can be completely convinced that they are in the right.

Started playing yesterday again - it was not that crowded but lag was hitting the servers hard - think due to the migration to Gameforge.

Today it seems a bit better then yesterday.

After a couple of hours I already got bored with Aion, getting ganked a lot in Abyss is not making it enjoyable for me.

So for the moment I will pass on F2P Aion.

I'm doing the 40 trial in the NA servers. I must say, I am scared to be playing it. NCsoft killed Dungeon Runners and Exteel, both games I loved when they weren't "profitable enough". Then again, Lineage 2 has been going forever, so I should take that as a good sign. I will say however Aion is vastly more fun than several of the MMOs I've played, though the rate of skills is rather slow, but you can also EXP off crafting and gathering... which is probably the most awesome thing ever.

I rolled Asmo, mostly because the Elyos are cookie cutter elves in lavish, beautiful... absolutely boringly the same armor, and their hoity toity attitude makes me want to destroy buildings Godzilla style. My only problem is... apparently, Elyos are super popular. I probably would have rolled 1 or 2 Elyos myself, just for a change of scenary on non-mains, but you're stuck on whatever you roll.

I'm awaiting F2P, and I'm worried about the cash shop offerings... honestly though, the game is great... but I'd never pay to play it. I'd pay $30 to own it though. Of course, were Rift to embrace such a system (Buy to Play)... I'd probably tear into that meaty little title.

I just...I just can't play this game. I cannot stand the character creation system. How can you take it seriously when characters can be super lanky, giant heads, super tiny bodies with afros, etc. It ruins the game and I can't believe it's still allowed.

@Tizmah

This is true. At least the tiny, tiny characters. That's all you see in PvP and PvP videos. They bank on the ideal that you'll be unbearably tiny, and can't be seen. They should force a system like Soul Calibur 5: In that game's CAS, the smaller you are, the smaller your reach, though I'd fix it so the tinier you are, the less hard you hit, but the more you can dodge. Super tiny characters would be hitting for 1s and 10s but could never be hit ever, pretty much... but if they do get hit? Iron Anvil falling on an Ant.

Erm who ever wrote this needs to make some edit's.... As Lorell said EU AION isnt run anymore by NcSoft it was sold off to GameForge. NcSoft is only running the NA AION and also NA AION will not have the same style of F2P model like EU AION. NA AION F2P model will be similar to NA L2
