Age of Conan's latest development update is here, and producer Craig "Silirrion" Morrison has quite a lot to say about the game's forthcoming crafting revamp. And when we say revamp, we mean revamp. "When we sat down and looked at the system and how we could add depth and improve engagement, it became clear that it was better to start over," Morrison says.
He isn't kidding either, as the new system does away with awkward quest blocks to progression and instead ties your advancement directly to making items and using the relevant skills.
Harvesting nodes will also spawn with more variety (and at more locations), and the much-reviled random NPC attacks that used to happen while harvesting are finally being dropped. Still want more details? Well, material quality will matter, there will be some sort of refining process, and there's an entirely new system for the actual production of an item. There's a lot more to Age of Conan's new crafting system, of course, but we're out of space, so you'll need to head to the official site to check it out.

Waiting for Turbine to do this with crafting and housing in LOTRO.

A lot of people enjoy crafting in lotro - I know I do, it's definitely grindy but the rewards are there - nothing feels better than decking out your alts in crafted gear that's generally the best available gear for most level ranges. Also having class items/potions craftable only , and how none of the professions are self sufficient promotes teamwork/marketplay/alts.
The only other crafting system I've really enjoyed is EQ 2, but that was before I realized 90% of the stuff I was making was completely useless.
I've played AoC off and on, and I've never seen the crafting system - goes to show how bad it is so this is probably a good decision.

@TortoiseCan While it isn't horrible it wasn't as good as others out there. It was kind of a quest based system that required you to make every item from that tier before moving on to the next tier. Making items you will never use is a pain and a silly wait to do things.
I like how the crafting areas are instanced but i hate travelling to them. I also dislike there was no armor you can craft for a barb (can you believe it) they left it out and never put it in.
While being random attacked during harvesting was annoying, the attacker usually dropped a material you were mining so I didn't mind too much.
I think they were trying to be unique and lost some of the fun in there somewhere. There are some good ideas implemented horrible probably because the title was forced out the door too soon.
Overall they are making a good choice with the changes.

Well, it sounds like it could have been interesting. I enjoy the game on some levels, but I think part of my reason for not pursuing it was the playerbase and the auto-leveling system. Seems like it was kind of a useless pursuit since you gain levels so fast by simply being a subscriber.
I also agree with your gear stance.. I hate the gear system in conan - seems like the higher level you become, the weaker-looking your armor becomes.

I just read the dev diary and was impressed. It actually sounds like an interesting system. Of course, beating two rocks together for an hour would have been more interesting than the old system. :p
As for LotRO, I really like how they've changed things so that you can start getting crits as soon as you complete the first 1/3 of any tier's XP. This makes it much easier to create stuff you and your friends can actually use, and they were very smart about letting you make items that are easily on a par with -- if not better than -- most of what can be gotten through quests or drops. My only real complaint is the same that I have with WoW and a lot of other crafting systems. Namely, that whoever thought sitting and doing nothing while your progress bar fills 100 times deserves to be taken into the woods and shot!

Three years to late and way short of any help to this struggling game. People demanded this from the the start, these clowns are just now looking into this? Laugh.

Personally I want new gear in AoC. My lvl 80 is wearing items that look level 20-30.
Hopefully crafting adds some new gear that looks nice and not something a hobo should wear.
I know, I am a barb and I am a filthy beast but I like looking cool too.

The crafting system has been AMAZING from the start - the problem is with so many level rushing, grinding, farming, pvp abusing azz-Hats playing AOC, none of them want to EARN anything. So since the crafting is more involved and absolutely amazing, they whine and cry over and over after crafting, as well as everything ELSE in game too! lol
And as for the random npc attacks and mobs, that made gatherings/harvesting sooooo much more EPIC and realistic!!! Now they are just going to have a huge zone with no enemies? thats sooooooo LAME!!!
If they want to do an overhaul , Im HOPING they at least add a TON more to do and interact with in the crafting zones.

Also, AOC was amaazing game and they did everything PERFECTLY - but when they gave up and became lazxy by not adding voiceovers to all quests after the starting 20 levels AND, by deciding to go F2p like more mmo SHEEP, instead of doing what they should have done in the beginning....
1) GET RID OF THE SCUMBAG PLAYERS who ruin the game for the majority. If the vocal minority is banned, AOc instantly becomes 1000x more fun.
and
2) PROMOTE YOUR DAMN GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (people STILL dont even know that AOC exists!!!)
Its sos sad to see games go f2p instead of just promoting the game and spending time on new content, instead of f2p changes. Its ridiculous.
Not promoting and allowing azzholes to ruin a games community are the TWO MAIN REASONS why soo many games have failed or gone f2p. So sad, so sad,

I am reading that the crafting system consists of "components + effects".
I imagine that people would simply grind to get the best item, and if so this leaves me wondering if this is all just juggling with numbers, instead of a weapon also having characteristics that affect the user negatively.
For example: the best longsword with lots of bonuses should end up being heavier and pretty much unusable by weak characters.
Perhaps the size of a weapon will change with component upgrade, making it unwieldable for short characters.

@Critical Mass Itemization has never been like this in AoC. It would screw with balance completely. You'll have to play another MMO for this.

WOW seriously??? Took you this long? I have no idea why anyone would think this system isn't flawed from the get go. Roadblocks are NEVER a good idea.
However getting rid of random attacks during harvesting is sad as that was the ONLY thing about the crafting system that was fun... lol.
That said now I've got an itch to pick this up again.
