This game seems to be at least as promising as GW2. I just hope that Funcom doesn't screw its launch like it usually does with their games.

I'm gonna have to choose too. will probably go with GW2 though because there's no monthly fee.

@Gaugamela

The author of the last two Funcom MMO launches , Gaute Gaudger, is long gone from the company. This is Ragnar Tornquist's baby, he's the mind behind Dreamfall. Sure it still could be a disaster, but with Gaute gone I'm a lot more optimistic.

"I'll confess that I'm a bit worried that some bugs won't be fixed and that some polish will be lacking from some areas"

I'm curious, what kind of bugs or lack of polish did you encounter?

@(Unverified) Clipping, targets deselecting, abilities not activating when they should be available, those kind of things. When I wrote my article, release was scheduled for April. I hadn't been aware that it was pushed to June (my editor updated the line in the article). With that in mind, I'm much more confident that they'll fix it.

@aurickle Like I wrote in my article, if the flaw was game design, then nothing could help save the game. However, it's a brilliant game, really something fresh. Last time I played it, it made me stop playing LotRO completely, because it was that good, in pre-release condition, compared to other MMOs.

@Vorender within the zones, you can go mostly anywhere you want. With the limited playtime we got, I didn't get a chance to see if I could find boundaries or not, so I can't tell you more on that point.

@Khai mann standard payment options with monthly, 3-mth, 6-mth, 1-year and probably game cards too. Bruusgaard said same as AoC.

@jealouspirate mandatory subscription to play the game, cash shop for cosmetic items and convenience items (like more slots in the gear manager), however, you'll still be able to purchase those with in-game currency, without having to pay real money for it.

Does this game still plan to release with a mandatory subscription AND a cashshop?

Dark horse of the year. If they can successfully juggle the snarl that sandboxes tend to be they will really have something.

I'm fine with subscription, and I'm fine with cash shop. I'm not fine with an MMO coming out into our current market that has a mandatory sub and a cash shop at the same time. Especially when Funcom itself has had such success with the Conan switch, it really makes me wonder what the hell they are thinking with the payment model for secret world.

@Comrade Domovoi

What success with AoC's F2P conversion. They may have got loads of new accounts created in AoC, but virtually none of those new accounts are still playing the game, the "success" is just PR spin to promote the game (which is the case with most f2p conversions tbh). The servers are grave yards and there is no more merging left to do.

This is exactly my concern about the game because we said the same things as AoC was getting ready to launch. Yet many of those issues that were there at launch are still there today, four years later.

I've been burned by FunCom before. So no matter how awesome this game sounds from write-ups such as this I'm still likely to wait until the end of the year before deciding to pick it up, just to see if the company has learned from its mistakes.

How open is the world? Is it wide open and huge, or corridor-like akin to AoC?

I never hear anything about this game. Usually there are beta leaks and scandals with MMO betas but this has absolutely nothing. Its so odd...

I'm really holding out hope for a Free tier. The game sounds interesting. Just don't want to spend money on subs at this point.
