On March 16th, 1999, Sony Online Entertainment launched one of the most monumental MMOs in history, and 13 years later, the studio is taking EverQuest to the next level with a free-to-play model. That's right, SOE's set the date for EQ's F2P conversion to be Friday, March 16 in order to coincide with the game's anniversary.
SOE promises that this won't be the only highlight of the teenage game's big day, as anniversary events will arrive in the game on that date as well.
In the meanwhile, the studio is asking for talented map-makers and artists to submit their own custom maps to be included in the game. There's no specific details yet on this process, but SOE says that it will be asking for these maps soon.

EQ, you were, are and will forever be the greatest game ever made. I will never forget you. Those times in Gfay, the first time you step into Crushbone, the bottom rooms in High Hold Keep, the spiders in Dreadlands, the giants in Desert of Ro, the first time you join a raid for Nagafen/Vox, the times you grouped in Old Sebilis... and i could go on for hours.
EQ, thank you. Thank you.

New maps implemented into Eq, all I can say is about time, the game is great but it's map system and the maps in general were pretty sub-par

Well, that was because the vets didn't want maps in game. They liked the old exploration system. SOE is now going to hold the hands of all the new players coming in.

Also great art for Vanguard. He was a wonderful artist and I have a selection of his art on my wall.

I really doubt making this game Free 2 Play will make new people want to play it as it's just too dated.

No, but on the other hand with EQ2 currently in danger of going up in a puff of smoke there are an awful lot of SOE customers likely to be looking for something else to play, and for a good many of them EQ will be a lot more appealing than any other current MMO.

@Seffrid Talking out of your arse or do you have proof that EQ2 is "going up in a puff of smoke"?

@(Unverified) he's probably talking about the splitting of the community issue that SoE is currently trying to resolve so that it does not happen.

First of all, I did not say it was going up in a puff of smoke, I said it was in danger of doing so.
Second, I was indeed talking about the haemorrhaging of accounts on both sides of the Atlantic since the decision to sell off the European playerbase to a cowboy German outfit and its associated ramifications for American and other players too.
SOE are trying to repair the damage but remain silent as always in such situations and whether they will be able to save the game this time around or whether it will go the way of SWG before it is far from clear.
It isn't just a few digruntled "rage-quitters" in the usual way of these things, it is multiple accounts being closed and whole guilds being disbanded, not a single poster has supported the action by SOE and virtually every poster has either cancelled and/or knows people who have done so.
The future of EQ2 is looking far from certain at the moment, and the longer that SOE remain silent the harder it will be for them to bring people back. As independent MMO journalists I'm surprised Massively aren't making more of the story to be honest, it's the biggest one they've had since the launch of SWTOR!

I wonder why they never ported this game over to the EQ II engine?

What about Vanguard F2P? /boggle

Everquest going F2P will indeed bring in more players. New players? maybe not that many, other then those who have heard so much about the game, that they want to give it a try - although it wont be the same as it was when it first release.
However, definitely a lot of people who had once played EQ and went off to other MMOs will want to load it up and revisit old characters. My friends and I are doing so, that's ten more players right there.
