@Danteeeee The press got a pass to this last beta weekend, they were allowed to post after Feb 20th, unlike normal players when they sign the NDA. =(

That looks pretty standard and ... quite boring :\ Why doesn't big companies like that don't try to innovate with crafting?

i dont get when people complain about crafting not being fun. was it ever fun? crafting in real life isn't "fun" but its satisfying. I guess i've just never encountered a crafting system that i found exciting, lol

@hassaun2006 Good point. A "job", which is essential what crafting is in a game, is not FUN, but can be rewarding. Especially when you see the fruits of your labor...or for my European brethren...labour. (yuck, :p)

@djodars FFXIV did and not everyone wants to take a long time crafting something. I like how they have it sped up when you craft more of the same item. Fun can be the rewards you get from being able to make certain things and being able to sell things

@Manafront It doesn't have to be long, you could have mini games in the interface, related to crafting... and when you do good, you craft more items or crit the item. Not a hard concept lol

@hassaun2006

I still think Vanguard had the best crafting system in any game I've seen. It actually required some level of engagement from the player, as opposed to being heavily simplified or an RNG-fest (re: Aion).

It's such a shame the game had so many problems, it would have been great if the game really took off...

@hassaun2006 SWG crafting was both boring AND fun.

It's also not just the crafting, it is how crafting and trading is handled together, both swg and ultima handled the buying and selling of crafted goods well which made the games more crafter friendly.

@(Unverified) yes agreed it isn't just about how you craft but how crafting can change gameplay, a proper system can create a less static world and more rewarding player interaction.

@hassaun2006 I find crafting IRL rather fun actually, it's not fun to mass produce though, and that is what a lot of mmo crafting boils down to, mass producing crap until capped. It is extremely boring crafting 14 daggers, 12 hammers, 12 pairs of pants, 6 chain mail shirts - train - then craft a slightly better versions of those items in the same fashion over and over until you reach crafting cap, and once there only having a handful of useful items to craft..

Crafting systems need to be a little more open ended, whereas you can experiment with existing recipes to produce something that has a little extra pizazz, even if it only adds a unique look, effect or stat.

Crafting as a hobby or profession should be fun, if nothing else fulfilling.

Except that mass producing goods in order to make anything useful is precisely what is *not* happening in the video; she makes several different items that are on-level her first time at the lathe.

Pretty early in the game, do we even know if that is the final crafting build? Many people love crafting, hard to believe they would go through all this work to change the way we think of mmos, and then leave crafting to the same ole run of the mill crapfest. I remember ages ago that they were going to rework the crafting system, from what I can tell from the video, it doesn't look much at all different, if any different from the old system.

Other than that the game is in beta, I hope it will be a much more robust system than this, at low level, but if not, it will make someone happy - It's not even possible to make everyone happy so "Mission Complete" right?

@djodars

agreed. when it comes to crafting I'd like it to be more of a mini game or something where some level of skill is required and items are somewhat unique. So someone could become a highly sought after crafter simply because they know how to play the mini game better than anyone else.

The problem with mini games is well, they cease being fun after the 1000th time you'd had to do it.

@Protoavis the problem with minigames and item crits etc is that it involves the RNG. Which is a pain in the ass for most people. Something that they specifically said they wanted to take out of the crafting system. Also, for others who want "unique" items. That's simply not possible since they want people to be able to post "I want to buy X" on the marketplace(AH). So all items need to fall within a certain range to allow people posting buy requests to ask for something specific.

@djodars Crafting minigames would get real old, and real annoying, real fast. A simple quick interface makes me happy. :D
