@kurosenshu Diablo as a 2.5d game didn't come around because of tech limits, it was a gameplay/art decision.

Wolfenstein 3d and Doom both came out long before Diablo 1 did.

He didn't need to post this, I have already lowered my expectations in the last couple of months without their doing anything but releasing their own news updates. :/

What do you expect? You have been hyping this game more years then anyone can count. Constantly releasing tidbits and then telling people wait another year just so you can make your Quarterly profit margins.

Honest devs are nice, but this guy will probably be fired for saying something this stupid. Stop drinking coronas at work, at least stop posting publicly when you're drinking.

If I was him I would've said.

"Don't overhype things. I know you're all excited about D3, but please don't get your expectations too high. This isn't a WoW killer."

I get that it was intended to be humorous and yet get a serious point across about tempering our expectations, BUT (big BUTT) he never EVER should have specifically compared D3 to some of the laughably worst films in the last 10 years. That was beyond idiotic of him to make such a blatant statement, whether he intended it to be humorous or not.

He should have instead made jokes but also used a less incendiary example in which to compare the game. For instance say maybe "D3 may not be a classic masterpiece like The Sixth Sense, but it can still be a pretty decent game akin to Signs or maybe even Unbreakable if that's your thing." Something like that is sort of funny but still compares the game to at least reasonably good films, not TOTAL bombs like the Village or even worse THE HAPPENING!?!? Seriously? That was one of the worse things I've EVER EVER seen. Marky Mark is a horrible actor with no talent, but in that he was horrendously bad to the point I felt sorry for him. And M. Night's direction and the script were reDUNKulous.

All in all I don't really care and I like for corporate representatives to show some real personality and not be total "shills" for the company, but this was a terrible decision to release this statement.

P.S. - He could've also said "This isn't going to be the a train wreck like 'The Happening or The Village', but don't have unrealistic expectations that it will be a masterpiece like 'The Sixth Sense' either."

Good luck in the inevitable "meeting" with your supervisors that you have in your future Bashiok.

Considering every since they started yanking features out, including features that they touted in the trailer, expectations have been diminishing.

Of course I wonder if this is a round a bout way of Bashiok saying how badly Kotick has meddled with Blizzard. There has been some signs of rebellion among some Blizzard people against what has been happening since the merger.

For a rather jaw dropping statement by an employee of a game development company to say about a highly anticipated title, one has to wonder why Massively took nearly a week to report on this.

As others have said, this is normal Bashiok. He doesn't actually think the game is bad and isn't being refreshingly honest with us. He posts like this because he'd trying inject humor into the forums and doesn't expect to be taken seriously.

What idiot tells the public to NOT get excited over one of their upcoming product releases? This surely doesn't bode well for D3, if you have someone telling you to lower your expectations before it's even out. They've had 12 years to get this game done and NOW they're telling us to not expect much from it?

Whew, good thing I'll be playing Torchlight 2 instead. That dev team seems to have confidence in their title.

Damn this is funny.

I just have to wonder: Blizzard has made BILLIONS in revenue from WoW over a good part of the last decade. Diablo III has been in production for many years itself. What have they been doing over there?

It is just plain stupid not to release a hit game. They have all the resources they could have wanted for it.

I, personally, found Diablo III to be "ok" in the beta. Not horrible, but nothing really that exciting. I'm even actually sort of disappointed in the lack of customization in my character. I know that in Diablo I days it wasn't as big of a thing, but today? Come on.

The gameplay is Diablo, which is good - but lacks anything really super exciting in my book. I guess I do expect them to take what works and really improve on it while taking the story, the powers, the setting, etc... all to the next level in gaming. Diablo III feels more like a sequel on a budget than a pioneer in dungeon crawling gameplay.

Graphics are nice. Diablo itself is fun, and this third take will be fun - just not earth shatteringly cool. I expect to see reviews in the 70/100 range citing the fact for such a long wait and buildup we have a lot of the same-same lacking the newness that the original Diablo delivered.

@Anatidae

Just to touch up on a couple things you said.

You don't need customization in this game. Your character is almost awlways facing away from you, your armor covers up your body and you're kind of small. Even on my 30" monitor I wouldn't be able to notice character customizations that well.

As for the gameplay, while I agree it wasn't super exciting but as a diehard Diablo fan it was nice to get back in the saddle. Also I can tell that the part of the campaign they let us play was kind of a starter level. Getting new players used to the game and what not.

@Traptz Hair color/length would be nice. Eye color would be silly.. but skin color as well would be nice too.

If customization on an orthographic dungeon crawler wasn't needed, or indeed, desired, then the thriving Torchlight skinning community would not exist. http://www.runicgamesfansite.com/downloads.php?do=cat&id=25

'Need' is a funny thing. It's subjective. You don't 'need' it, but who's to say whether others do or do not? Maybe their 'need' is to feel more connected to the character they've made and are working on. Tough to do when you're a clone.

So...you based your opinion of the game off a 30-minute-intro-level-for-new-player-normal-difficulty-beta that is essentially just a demo.

Cool, glad I wont be seeing you.
