Hm, neat video.

ArchAge looks to be an amazingly ambitious project and the sheer amount of stuff put in looks awesome. As a world I so do hope all this ends up functioning and working in the marketplace.

Question will be: will players sufficiently accept failures for all of this to be successful?

I come from EvE online, so piracy and losses are not new to me.
However in EvE if you know what you are doing you can live with that threat quite well.

I wonder what amount of in game work that sunk ship represents. Will the losers of that engagement be able to recover from it or will it end in rage quits?
Basically: will the PvP in AA be sustainable?

For an MMO sustainability is the key I think. If the system ends up producing too clear "winners" and too clear "losers" then with the progression of time chances are the "losers" will take the hint and leave for other games.
An MMO is by principle meant to be an ongoing game.

An excellent question, and the specifics are important for a game like this because it will impact the game's ability to attract new players who try the game out after the initial release.

If there is an extremely large amount of player work put into building / maintaining a ship (something that wouldn't surprise me in a Korean MMO), and the ship is totally gone once destroyed in combat, then this could easily lead to frustration. It would be incredibly disheartening to a new-ish group of players to finally get their ship in the water only to have it get WTFPWNED by a more established group's better ship, five minutes after setting sail.

@Rialle

It's not even so much a matter of being sunk within 5 minutes by a better crewed ship. That can happen.

It's more of a "will it happen every time" thing.

And also will the world be filled up quickly with stronger people staking their claims, or will there be a place for people coming later to find a place for themselves. Other than join or die.

I can't recall where I read it, but if I remember right the ship isn't totally "gone" when destroyed. After being "destroyed" it will then go into your inventory and you then have to have it repaired in order to use it again. It does cost money but a fraction of the cost that it did when buying it brand new. So it's a nice partial penalty for defeat. Enough to make combat intense and to mitigate stupid suicide tactics, but not so extreme that you your best ship docked in fear of losing it.

@Rialle Maybe PVP flagging will involve an actual flag. :D

this looks cool. but the combat mechanics are horrid, and this game wont hit NA for at least 4 years.

That cannon needs a lot of work...

Right now, judging by the their firing pattern, they look more like mortars than actual cannon.
That would be fine if those were bomb ketches, or something, but they look more like regular frigates armed with long guns, to me.

It just looks... odd.

@Wensbane On that note, if these are in fact mortar, and not cannon, wouldn't it be awesome to be able to fill them with vendor trash?

I have to admit, that does sound pretty awesome. Would give a whole new meaning to the "can I have your stuff?" quip, for sure.

No it would not be awesome as vendor trash implies loot drops which are hopefully not part of the sandbox, player crafted items are the way to go

Fully agree that the cannon firing did look odd with how they fired. Would be awesome if end up having mortars and cannons both in the end. One for holding the line with massive cannon direct fire barrages and the other for supportive indirect fire bombardments.

@Ref Minor OK then, crafting trash.

Or hell, base materials. Load the cannon with the stuff you got from breaking other stuff.
