It took some time but I think if NC Soft is humble about it maybe this will bring players back.

NCsoft vs BlueHole :D

Yep. I'd give the nod to Bluehole for the combat and race selection. Aion takes it for its shear the level of customization, extensive pets/housing, and large amount of content. Aion going FTP may now completely tip the balance in its favor imo. This is actually making rethink my TERA purchase.

I agree. Especially considering I already have a number of characters in Aion that I've grown semi attached to.

I love Aion, but this is sort of a bittersweet thing. It'll be tons of fun having more people in game, but if it's anything like Lineage 2 was 1. if you're new, good luck getting anything done with any semblance of speed whatsoever and 2. a lot of vets will show some disdain for newcomers which will be somewhat justified due to a very 'loud' minority of newcomers who 'ruin it' for everyone else.

Don't get me wrong, this is still excellent news, but if you're interested yet you're not dying to play asap then I say give it a few weeks to a month before you start playing. The lowbie zones will be tolerable and a decent number of trolls and other undesireables will have come and gone for good by then.

and also shame on me for not giving NCSoft props for this. I think it's cool that they did this with L2 and now they're doing it for Aion. You don't really see many companies do the whole "no, we're serious. EVERYTHING is free" thing so having a great game like Aion added to the list makes it an even better deal.

I get the feeling that the p2p model is basically dead at this point, as so many are converting to f2p models instead.

Still love the t-shirt I got for this game at pax two years ago. One of the few gamer shirts that has gotten even non gamers co comment on how cool it looked.

@mrantimatter Quite the contrary. The majority of the games going F2P is a last ditch effort to make a final push for money and to save the game. Problem with P2P games is they don't provide enough content fast enough to justify a monthly fee.

The only game who does it right for the most part is SE. Its sad though that their game(s) are either old or bad, but they pump out the content quite often.

I don't see how WoW still has 10M+ subs though. A content patch every 3-6 months is insane and such a scam.

Rift justifies your subscription.

I would agree with this statement. Content patches every 6 weeks.

I'm excited. Don't have enough time/money to justify paying a subscription for this, and when I did never purchased any of the cash shop items I wanted (I don't like using a cash shop in any game I'm actively paying for already). Definitely going to hop back in ^_^

Wait so....what do you pay for then? Is there a cash shop or something?

I f***ing love Aion, just not enough to pay for it--especially with TERA right around the corner. Still, for months I've said I'd play in a heartbeat if it were f2p, so this is the best news I've read today!

Agreed! I always loved Aion, but one can only have so many subscriptions. Really really excited for this!

If the free accounts are as crippled as the EU version it's not even worth coming back for.

@Hockster If you are "coming back", then you get the veteran tier which is definitely not crippled.

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Aion. I think the game had potential to be great, but NcSoft neglected the western version for too long. I'll be playing TSW this summer, but I may come back to Aion in the mean time if they get things going.

Common sense says, "No" and raises you UO and DaoC...and even throws in WAR, just for laughs. ;p
