This last weekend, ArenaNet invited a few dozen members of the gaming press into its highly anticipated MMO, Guild Wars 2. The game is still in its closed beta testing stage, but the reveal of this event is an opportunity for the public to finally see what this game is all about.
Our Guild Wars columnist Elisabeth Cardy and I spent a good part of this weekend exploring as much as we could in the game in preparation for today's embargo lift. Read along for each of our impressions below, and be sure to watch our beta montage video at the end of each article.

I was going to say, I was hoping that the first impressions would be split up by one person who is a 'fan' and has followed the game, and one person who has either no experience with the game or is not really interested or excited about it.
This way I could get different points of view. A self proclaimed super fan saying everything is great doesn't tell me much.
I would love it if this could be repeated by somebody more impartial.

Massively actually has a "massive" bias towards and in favor of any and everything Guild Wars. This is a fact, but I do find the impressions interesting at least.

@Rialle pretty much. If they don't trust massively that's fine, there's other sites out there if they want info.
I know it's a hard pill to swallow for some in the mmo community being as we've been fed lies, weened on a threadmill gear grind, and linear gameplay for a decade but time are changing and we should open our minds to the possiblity that the genre is finally moving forward.

Are there mounts? Flying? Is there mounted/flying combat?
I know it's probably wishing for the moon, but I haven't seen the mounts yet.

There are no mounts, either land or flying, in the game. And I believe they have no intention of adding them.

@jealouspirate Thanks for the info.
It seems to me that an MMO that launches in 1012 without any form of mounted travel would be worth mentioning somewhere?
Tab target, no mounts, and no flying. I could forgive two out of three, but this causes me serious doubts.
And I don't expect mounted combat, but I'm looking for it as a next-gen feature in MMOs.

@Rialle I appreciate your point, but I disagree that it's a universal truth.
Adding flight alone could dumb-down a smallish themepark world like WoW, but if we had a 6,000 kilometer world rather than a 500 kilometer world and implemented flying combat you might just find that the third map dimension is just as alive and explorable as being stuck on the ground.

I really don't understand this, although since following GW2 I've sadly discovered that it's a thing for a lot of people. I love flying mounts and they've never made the world feel small to me. For me it always enhanced exploration because I could fly up and sit on all the stuff that I was previously just looking at from the ground. I can understand not implementing them, especially in a game not designed for them from the start, but GW2 will never be quite perfect to me because of that.

@Rialle and none of these reviews mention the lackluster combat nor the abysmal voice acting and if you dare speak against GW2 you post is either downvoted or deleted.

I've been reading beta impressions today from all around the web, and haven't seen either of those complaints.
Given that all these different, unrelated sources didn't mentioned it, maybe the combat isn't so "lackluster" nor the voice acting "abysmal"?

@jealouspirate Okay watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-YKm20rPQY&feature=g-all-u&context=G2b96cfaFAAAAAAAAAAA
Horrible voice acting uninspired combat and boring kill 10 rats quests.
I swing a sword
I swing a sword again...hey I swing it again wasn't that what the Anet guy said?
But it is a gorgeous game.

I knew it would only be a matter of time before Dunraven swung in with his "professional" opinion.
Little late though, thought you'd be one of the first ones to strafe the parade.

Actually, I've already watched that video. You think that voice acting is "abysmal"? Well, there's no accounting for taste I suppose. I just can't agree that's it's horrible.I enjoyed it. What exactly is so horrible about it? Say, compared TOR? I just don't see it.
As far as combat goes, we're talking about level 1 here. Yes, they're spamming one attack because you only start with one attack! It's really unfair to dismiss the combat system based on a video like this, which shows the tutorial zone. The players don't even have access to multiple skills yet, let alone multiple weapons.
GW2 combat mechanics NOT demonstrated in the linked video:
-Attacking while moving, even channeled abilities
-Different abilities and how they interact
-Weapon switching
-Cross Profession combos
-Actively dodging enemy attacks
-Utility abilities
-The 'downed state'
-Group dynamics of switching roles on the fly
Just off the top of my head.

@Faction 3 Nothing I am saying is untrue the video even backs it up; I don't think it will keep the game from being successful because hey it's a cheap buy in, I still plan to buy it myself. But anyone can see this is not the Messiah the Zealots has been preaching that it would be.
It's guild wars with horrible voice acting derivative stories and a crap ton of hype.
