This last weekend, ArenaNet invited a few dozen members of the gaming press into its highly anticipated MMO, Guild Wars 2. The game is still in its closed beta testing stage, but the reveal of this event is an opportunity for the public to finally see what this game is all about.
Our Guild Wars columnist Elisabeth Cardy and I spent a good part of this weekend exploring as much as we could in the game in preparation for today's embargo lift. Read along for each of our impressions below, and be sure to watch our beta montage video at the end of each article.

The sooner you can get a release date, the sooner I'll be able to tell my job when to expect me to not be coming in for a few days.

I wonder if Arenanet will allow guilds to form and pre-register as they did with SWTOR. Otherwise, I think it will be hard for guild members to get on the same server when the game launches, as servers will quickly fill to capacity.

@Dumac My guess is probably not. In one of the PvP articles, they mentioned about one server having dominance, that the other two can beat up on it, and that the winners will be put against each other the next round in a leaderboard style of WvW competition, so my guess is no, that you won't be able to just switch servers easily... knowing the model, they'll probably charge a fee for the server transfer, but knowing its not a life or death decision, they'll most likely keep the fee nominal.

Hmm, I'm skeptical. This is a review by the media. I will reserve judgement until I get to play. If they were negative reviews i'd be concerned but also a negative review of a AAA game would forever tarnish joystiq, and joystiq would never be able to get a first run review again. I will wait for a player review, not a media review.

That's some real tinfoil hat wearing paranoia right there.
This is a preview, nothing more. But are player reviews any better? Especially when it comes to beta's? You're typically going to get the opinion of fanboys, who love every little aspect of the game and will do nothing but praise it.. or the trolls, who've hated the game since day one or possibly never even really played it and just want to go against the popular opinion.
If you really must, there are previews like this from random fans who've played the demo build at conventions. Most of which have been equally as positive.

@Lenn Oh it's a review/preview/impression/insertanothersynonymhere. It's a "media day" review. I don't trust it. It's like reading an american car magazine review on an american car. ALWAYS glowing ALWAYS gushing. I will reserve judgment untill I play it, and that's after BETA.

@Snowblind It's nice to get interesting tidbits of information from testers, features and gameplay, but when it comes to opinions, I look the other way. I'll form my own opinions. For example Elisabeth writes about the healing system, I understand from her writing the way it works but I will have to try it out before I reserve judgement on weather or not it's a good system, just an example.

@Bourius Well, your own impressions will always trump anothers. After all, they're not forcing you to play or pay any $ for it, so the only person whose opinions matter is your own. But the real question is: if you really don't trust reviews, or impressions, or whatever... then why are you here reading them?

@(Unverified) First: it's not a review. Second: I just read that piece you've linked to three times (trying to get page views, are you?) and I fail to see the difference between yours and the two above. All three are gushingly positive.

@Lenn In a small way an impression is a review. If someone impresses you then you checked them over.
Anyways the impressions do a nice job of detailing the areas they listed. Playing the game is the true review for a gamer. I think majority of people need that hands-on game play to see if the game is their cup of tea.
Overall solid impressions and you guys should be used for more MMO impressions.
